I am stuck with 1000 pieces of large pistol magnums can they be substituted for regular primers?
-
How much were they selling the brick for?

$30

It doesn't make much, if any, difference.
If you're really paranoid, I'll trade you some regular for your magnums.
But it's not even worth the time and gas to do the swap.
-
I don't reload, but I've read that when using Magnum primers in place of regular, you should reduce the powder by 10%.
You should then measure the velocities between the standard and magnum primers and adjust the magnum-primed load until the two are about the same.

That makes sense. I don’t have a chronograph though. Guess I gotta buy one haha.

I trust your judgement. I been looking online and it seems to be pretty unanimous that it’s not much of a difference. Thank you for the offer.

A side note....
In the past, I've had more difficulty seating cci primers than with other brands.
Whatever method you use, inspect the primers after seating to see that they are flush, or a little under.
What kind of brass did you obtain and what is your recipe? Also tell me what kind of pistol and barrel length.
I have some experience in 45 acp.
-
I have done some testing before with LPM primers for 45 ACP. I chronoed loads using LPM primers and its about a 75 FPS average increase from using LP primers. So reduce your powder a little to reflect that.

I’m reloading some blazer brass from a case I bought, I also have some brand new Remington cases. I have about 500 pieces of range pick ups as well. This will be my first time reloading 45acp and right now so far I have 3 test loads I’m waiting to try. I’m using CFE Pistol, 6.0gr, 6.5gr, and 7.0gr with 230gr TMJ Speer bullets. Shooting out of a Glock 21 barrel is 4.61”.

Wow that seems Like a pretty significant increase from just primers. Everything else was the same?

230 gr (15 g) FMJ, Winchester................835 ft/s (255 m/s)
So, 835 ft/s x .10 = 83.5 ft/s. If you reduce your powder by 10%, you should expect to see a relatively similar drop in velocity. Once you're close, gradually work your way UP to the normal velocity.
75 ft/s is about 9% of 835 ft/s (.08982). A 10% reduction in load should keep you within a safe below-normal-velocity range that you can work with.
Basically, a 75 ft/s difference between normal and magnum primers is well within the expected results, based on what I read.
For whatever that's worth. :geekdanc:

ok then...just a few more questions-
What kind of die set and press do you have?
Do you have a taper crimp die? It would be a 4th die.
Are you trying to duplicate military ammo? (that is what I recommend)
I do help newbie loaders get started if you want to drop by the house in Waipahu.

Right now I don’t have much room to set up a legit reloading area. I am using mostly lee stuff right now. I have a Lee hand press and a lee die set it has a taper crimp die. I wasn’t really trying to duplicate anything just going off of my Lyman book. I would love to drop by someday and soak up some knowledge that would be awesome!

I've been going to Roy's well over 20 years, not stopping anytime soon.

That’s fine. I’m just a nobody anyways and I doubt this will affect them at all, (not that that’s what I was trying to do). hopefully next time though they’ll treat a nobody like me better.

I did the tests mid to late 90's. I have the results on a 3x5 cards somewhere.... if I find them I can post later
Sorry. I could not find the cards.

All you need is a 44 magnum revolver so you can use those magnum primers. :D

Guess that’s the only option. Think my wife will buy it?

Here's my load for 45 using X-Treme Bullets 230 grain (plated) Round Nose
CFE Pistol: 6.0 grains (805 fps) to 6.1 grains (818 fps)
COAL: 1.260" with a light crimp
Velocities are from a HK USP 45 full size
just my opinion, but 7.0 grains might be kind of stout and might exceed safe pressures for your Glock 21

Awesome thank you for the heads up. I’m using 230gr Speer TMJs and on their website they actually list the maximum load at 7.5gr! I may just hold off on shooting the 7.0gr load until I get a chrono. Mahalo! :shaka:

I have time to kill...
My friend in the states liked CFE with a 230 FMJ when he could not get the more common powders.
He advocated 6.4 gr.
Hogdon lists 6.8 max with a 230 gr FMJ flat point. So 6.4 sounds like a good place to start.
I'm pretty sure it will yield something similar to military ball.
bring your stuff over to my house and I can set up your dies.
45acp is a little different from rifle ammo.
