The range in Glenwood (on Route 11, 17 miles SW of Hilo) is open again. 8) The Kahuku Practical Pistol Shooters Club is now handling maintenance and insurance, so anyone who wants to shoot there will have to join the KPPSC, but dues are only $25/year, and the range is open 8-5, seven days a week;. Matches take priority, but the only match actually scheduled these days is IPSC on the third Sunday of every month.
Applications for the KPPSC are available at Maebo's International Supply, which is in the same building as the Maebo Noodle Factory*, 2036 Kilauea Ave, Hilo (behind KTA), Tuesdays and Thursdays, 10-4 only. Ring the bell on the office door and ask for Will.
Or, if you can't make it to Maebo's you can email me at
rtbrgs@gmail.com
and arrange a time to meet at the range and fill out an application.
There's a pistol range (with a berm at 60yds) and a rifle range (with a couple of berms; you can set targets out to 220yds or so; 100yds is marked, and 200yds has a steel frame to hang targets on). Members get the gate combination and can shoot whenever the range is open.

crazy cat,
Out of curiosity, does membership in the KPPSC happen to qualify one for CMP membership?

"The M1 rifle is the finest battle implement ever devised." And one of the competitors used his at the match on Sunday. "Heavy Metal" indeed.....

Mahalo!
I'll swing by next week Tuesday.
Aloha, Frank

Freekin Sweet! I just moved to Hilo from CA a month ago and was wondering about a local range.
Once I'm a bit more settled (i.e. have a car and had my ammo shipped over here) I'll be able to sign up and start shooting.

Blane was my NRA training counselor!

Hi, this is my first post here. I just sent in my KPPSC dues yesterday in the mail. Already got the code and permission to get into the Glenwood range from Bo. Waiting on getting the ID and stuff from the club. I'd like to go up there this coming week to check it out and get some range time in, but I'm going to need some help with directions on getting there. I kind of know the general location, but I'm not real familiar with that area.
-
Walena,
I sent you a PM with directions.
-
Got it. Thanks a lot, crazy cat. IF the weather cooperates, I'm hoping to be out there soon.
-
Sent mine in yesterday with a coworkers app. Hope to check it out next week Saturday.

Thanks for the tip in the other thread, I havent spent alot of time yet on the forums and did not even catch this thread! I definitely plan on joining. I will probably end up heading out to Hilo side when I get to the island to look at some vehicles. I'll have to see about picking up an application or meeting with you!

Thanks again for the info, crazt cat. made it out to the range on Friday morning. Was a bit rainy all the way out from town until about 10, then it cleared up nicely. It's a great looking place to shoot. Spent some time sighting in the rifle at 100 yds., then got some pistol time in before I had to leave. Looking forward to going back there real soon!
-
Me and a couple of friends were down there pretty much all day on Saturday. Had a good time. :shaka: Please bring items for fixing or repairing target stands. I'll be more prepared next time. I left some cardboard in the bathroom if anyone needs.
-
Is Maebo's still the place to go for the range application and payment?
-
Yep you can get the application there but still need to mail in your payment, a SASE and your waiver form.
-
I went by Maebo's on 8-15-12 to pick up a gun I ordered and was told the range was closed. Apparently, there were people abusing the property and acting in an unsafe manner?
-
Really that's news to me I am heading up there tomorrow. Plus they just had a clean up day only a couple weeks ago.
pb
-
Was there today from about 8:30 am until 1, along with 5 others who came by during the morning.including the owner of the property.
-
I heard some people went to Maebo's to get applications but were told that Maebo's is no longer involved with the applications and sent them over to Hillo Kine Wireless?? Does that sound right?
-
Range is still open. There was just an email sent out about some folks not following the range rules as they should be and how people need to follow them a little better. That's about it, didn't hear anything about Maebo's not having apps anymore.
-
WTF?
I'll check into what's going on; Blane (Maebo) is supposed to come up on Sunday (there's always a bunch of people there for IPSC) to talk about a two day defensive pistol course that his friend wants to teach, tentatively scheduled for the second weekend in October.
The range is open, although the owner (that's me) has seen some unacceptable safety violations in the last couple of weeks (and some illegal stuff, like 13 and 15 round pistol magazines), as well as folks bringing friends who aren't members (which is one reason I've been wandering up to the range for at least a little while almost every day); if this continues, this may result in certain individuals getting thrown out. Everything's cool with the KPPSC, though.
If anyone needs an application, PM me and I'll mail you one.

Thanks for keeping us all up to date C.C

See ya tomorrow Bo

Apparently, I misunderstood. Sorry for the misinformation. Is there any restriction for firing centerfire rifles? I'll check back with Maebo's and see if I can qualify to join. I'm 64 and don't have much shooting time left.
-
As far as I know there's no restrictions on centerfire. When you join you will get an email that explains all the rules and requirements for the range.
-
Had a good time at the range today got to meet four other members. Everyone did a great job of communicating and being safe while sharing the range I hope to meet more members like I did today. :shaka:

Maebo's still have the appications for KPPSC. They won't accept any apps or payment. You have to send in the apps with the payment AND a SASE to the address listed.
Right now till Mid OCT, please drop by Hilo Kine Wireless and see Gaine Hakoda to drop of your app. Again have a SASE with your application and payment.
After Mid OCT, you will send your app payment and SASE to the address listed.
ALSO a note on the dues. Its $25 per individual. Family up to 3 individuals is $35. Thats immediate family. ie You, your wife, and kid. Not your friend, cuz, etc. You still need a application for each person.
You will get a email with the range rules etc. Please look over that.
-
Looking for a new club. I am getting ready for the move and I am hopping they are still taking applications.
-
Some time in April, the KPPSC will start accepting new members. Look for applications at the various gun stores, and don't hesitate. Dues will be $50/year and new members will need to have completed at least one NRA safety course (the course to buy a pistol counts, but NOT the Hunter Safety course that the state teaches for free).
-
Gotcha. I won't arriving until mid to late July. I would love to join!
-
Are there any restrictions on the use of FMJ ammo at the Glenwood range. I will be moving to Hilo soon, and I have some ammo that I would like to bring over. Thanks
-
Any word on new members yet?
