Title: Looking for others to attend gun classes
Post by: zippz on April 10, 2020, 07:47:32 PM
Its time for me to get some training in this year and I'm looking for others that would like to join in to practice and travel with.  I'm assuming that the COVID dies down later this summer and restrictions are eased.  I usually go to Front Sight in Las Vegas, but I think the hotels and casinos there will be closed for a while.  These are the classes I'm interested in:

Rangemaster - Instructor Development and Instructor Advanced.  Various dates and locations.
https://rangemaster.com/training/instructor-development-course/

Sig Sauer Academy -  pistol/rifle/shotgun imaster instructor, low light instructor, bullets and bandages, fire team tactics, executive protection, and others.  Epping, NH
https://www.sigsaueracademy.com/

Active Self Protection National Conference - 3 days of self-defense shooting courses.  Manhattan KS, Sept 25-27.
https://activeselfprotection.com/asp-national-conference-bullets-and-bibles-2020/

Taser Instructor - must be a nra instructor or meet other requirements.  Phoenix, AZ
https://buy.taser.com/pages/become-a-civilian-taser-trainer

Conferences: (may not happen):

USCCA Expo - Kansas City, MO, date TBD

SAF Gun Rights Policy Conference - Orlando, FL Sept 18-20

I'm in.  My goal is to become an NRA and tactical instructor and start a simulator training business here.

PM me, I suggest John Lovell, Warrior Poet Society, Taran Tactical and Raidon Tactics.

Marshall safe training is who I was going to train for a NRA Instructor License.

I could take care of that.

Are you an NRA instructor?  Send me a PM about how we can collaborate.

It is good to get outside of the islands as there are limited opportunities here.  It is a big commitment to attend these in terms of time and money.  Should be doing live fire practice every week and dryfire at home.

I've been doing 200 dry fire reps from home in isolation and was going to x-ring dynamic Downrange excercises until the lockdown.  But I got a Mantis X which is a cool little dry fire device.

ZIPPZ, is the Active Self Protection course run by Jon Correa from YouTube?

Yup.  It's a fundraiser and the proceeds go to charity.  There are instructors from across the country that volunteer to teach it and sponsors cover the costs.  It's broken up into different workshops throughout the day on the range.  This covers more of it:.

I'm kicking off my training year with Masaad Ayoob's Deadly Force Instructor course in Phoenix, AZ July 6-10.  It's a week long class, all in the classroom, teaching the legalities of self-defense and how to defend yourself in court with a mock trial at the end.  You could take his MAS-40 class which is geared toward shooting and student deadly force course if you want to forgo the instructor certification..  I don't know of anyone that teaches a class like this to civilians and it is from the top instructor in the nation.

I'm not really sure what I can do with this class.  Help with lobbying for gun rights, teaching the legalities of self-defense, or adding it to my CCW course.  Ayoob is getting old so have to take this class before he retires.  There's 3 of us flying up for the class, let me know if you'd like to join in.

I'd like to take the MAS40 class pending travel restrictions and lockdowns.  Did you all book flights already?  Do you know if there is any national quarantine from State to state?  Let me know what flight and hotel you've booked.

The MAG40 is a separate class.  https://massadayoobgroup.com/events/category/mag40/

Arizona is relatively mild for Covid, and they'll likely be ahead of the nation in getting back to normal.  For the Deadly Force Instructor, we haven't booked our flights yet, but plan on leaving Saturday night or Sunday morning.   Might spend an extra day there at the end to explore around or shoot at the Ben Avery range.

Factor in ammo counts and pricing.  I recall when I was doings classes in the 2013-2014 range during the ammo craze.  Some classes were more "efficient" on round count, at least relative to the Magpul video level ballistic masturbation.

I'm starting to see ripples in ammo pricing, like $300/1000 for retail CCI 9 mm and closer to $0.40-0.50/round for M193.  I think that's worse than the 2013-2014.  Luckily, when I was taking classes back then, I got to know some good people in previous classes and they hooked me up with ammo.

Buy cheap, stack em deep.  Ammo can get expensive not just for the class, but the trainup prior to the class.  Lesser extent when taking a class on the mainland since travel and class fees make up most of the cost, but availability could cause problems.  I do my research when taking a class on the mainland.  Sometimes pre-arrange a person to person ammo buy,  order it online and have it delivered, get it from walmart or a gun store, or from the school itself.  I usually bring the first day's ammo with me just incase I have trouble buying ammo or my flight gets delayed.

Got 5 of us going to the Deadly Force Instructor class.  Still got space for one more in the hotel room.  Course cost came out to $1210 including a year of ACLDN insurance and $423 for the flight.  I'm expecting the quaranteen to be over by then with testing.

Due to the quarantine I didn't take any courses yet.  Had one person endure the quarantine to attend Masaad Ayoobs DFI class.  She said it was a fire hose of information and worth it.  Rest of us plan to attend in November in Seattle.  Or if there's enough interest we could get Masaad to come to Hawaii.  Though I'm not sure if people will pay $1200 for a week long class.

I'm still planning to attend the ASP conference in September in Kansas, but that depends on the quarantine.  I was going to take the Haley pistol class with it, but then I questioned how am I going to get 2,100 rounds for it?

I'm planning to postpone the rest of my classes to the Spring.  In the meantime, I'm getting back into the groove again practicing at Koko Head and Mission Bravo courses, I'll get a review out later.  I'll jump into the next Specialized Services class to give them a try.

$1200 for a week long class isn't bad overall if you break it down cost per day and compare to other "national level" instructors.  But yeah, probably pretty steep for most.  I'd be interested depending on timing and what is being covered in the week long class.

2,100 rounds it a lot.  Both cost and just plain shooting.  How many days is that?  Hope you can find someone to link up with and have them order ammo online and ship to them.  For the courses that I took on the mainland, the instructor usually had a point person in the group they coordinated the training with.  That's how I usually got the bulk of my ammo for the classes.  And developed pretty good friendships through those contacts.

Looking forward to your report on the MB courses.

I was looking at Haley cause it was in the area.  It's a 3 day class.  I thought about ordering online and shipping ammo there but it would be a big headache.  For one thing Haley is visiting the range so I don't know anyone there.  Then if the ammo does get delivered there but I have to cancel due to a quarantine extension, then I'm stuck.  Or if ammo continues to be sold out before the class then I'm screwed.  If it was only 500 rounds then I could bring it from home.

Zippz,

I really want to take some classes now that I have the time. Unfortunately, I am remiss to leave my wife overnight at this time. I am taking local classes right now that are taught by people with great credentials. Of course they don’t have the same credentials as Ayoob but they have the credibility that fills their classes. My next class isn’t until March. And while I’ll be gone all day I won’t have to have my mind on the well being of my wife by leaving her overnight. I’ll be able to concentrate on learning and practicing.

I just finished my AZ CCW class and I have already received my permit. This permit combined with my AZ DL means I don’t have to go through any background checks when buying a firearm.

My next class is two days long and will help me unlearn all my bad habits I have learned over the years and will teach me to shoot accurately and quickly. While I think I am pretty good I know there is a lot more I can learn. But I can go home, which is 5 minutes away, in case of an emergency.

If at any time my wife gets to the point I can leave her at home I will want to take some classes at Gunsite. I’ll contact you if I ever get to that point.

Sounds like everything is working out there.  I was supposed to be there last month for Masaads class but had to cancel due to the quarantine here.  You have a lot of opportunities up there in Arizona, especially at the Ben Avery range.  John Correia from Active Self Protection lives in Phoenix and does classes there.

Not a gun class, but NRA is having their annual meeting in Tuscon on October 24th.  Might be limited to 50 people unless the COVID orders are lifted.
