Figure it would be helpful if a thread posting just cancellation appointments got started, instead of having them on the thread that's convoluted with questions, and comments (just hit notify on the thread and you get alerts on new posts) easier then checking the website every 5min.

Ok, I just completed my long gun renewal today (July 10). I made a July 24 appointment for 9am a while back not knowing that it was not necessary for those just picking up their permits.
So I just canceled the July 24 appointment to acquire firearms (3 guns or less 10 minute appointment). The appointment is for 9am.
I wonder if there’s a lag for cancellations to show up. I’ve been refreshing all morning, and the same spot in October keeps disappearing and reappearing. The last one I canceled a few weeks ago, showed up instantly, and then disappeared too. I did it around 2 am though, so unless someone was actually up that late, I wonder if the system is pulling them too?
Also, looks like they are releasing one spot per 10 minute slot.

Was able to get an appointment for long gun on August 3 at 9:30. But will not be able to register any firearms as there are no available appointments to do so. So what's the use of having the permit if you can't register the firearms that you purchase?
The only part of the law that matters at this point is to obtain a Permit to Acquire before the transfer. Go ahead and get your long gun permit. It's good for 12 months.
After you have it, you may use it to purchase as many long guns as you want/can afford/can get spousal permission for.
Registration is a separate issue. If you can't get a registration appointment, that's no reason to not get the permit/firearm. Nothing in the law ties acquisition to registration -- only to permits.
They can't punish anyone for failing to register in the 5 days mandated by law if the registration system can not support it. "I tried to get an appointment many times, but no reservations were available" is all anyone should have to say if the issue is raised.

Last time I gave mine away, I told the other member to stand by on the site while I cancelled. He was able to see the appointment as soon as I confirmed the cancellation. Not sure if it’s that quick anymore, but I wouldn’t see why not.

That's pretty much how it's been going down. You both get on the site at the same time. It's not 100 %. Some guys got scooped even when they was on the sight same time.

They also mentioned that they are considering penalties for people who make multiple appointments and do not keep them. They have been getting a lot of complaints from people about the difficulties to even get an appointment. So they are monitoring cancelations and no shows to see if there are people who are making appointments just to make them and bog down the system.

The problem with that "investigative plan" is it's too easy to make bogus email accounts and VPNs. There's also the free WiFi hotspots and Internet stations people can use for free (libraries, etc). If someone wants to be anonymous online to avoid being caught creating appointments with no intention of using them, it's not that difficult.

I just wish they would add more officers to increase the staffing. That way it wouldn’t be such a cluster F#$%! Open Kapolei? I already have a shit load of guns. So the 14 day waiting period is ridiculous!

Just got off the phone with HPD and they stated that any changes to an appointment like swapping? Both parties need to be on site to verify the appointment swap. So even if you agree with another party here on 2A both individuals need to still make it to the station to do any swapping of times for permits or registration.One... I don't believe anything they say. They make up their own rules as they go. I need go no further than how they measure barrels or try to make people weld magazines to lowers for AR pistols even though there is no such rule.

So last night 08/24/2020 at 7:39pm, I was the one who cancelled the permit to acquire appt on Sept 3rd 1pm. Was meant for 6716J but I knew cancelling the appt comes with the risk of anyone whose also looking for appt online and the fastest to click "submit" after filling the infos is bound to get it... With it, it's safe to say that the scheduling we made so far might be, at the time of two person swapping schedule and we were fast enough and lucky to get the released schedule. Until there is an abundance of open schedule, This is how it's going to be In these times when scheduling an appt is hard to come by. :shaka:

This is a stupid system IMHO! Okay I get the appointment deal when applying for the permit and the 14 day waiting period. But the 2nd appointment is absolutely moronic! Registration should be immediate upon possession from the GS.

The officer I spoke to said you can keep the gun in your safe until your registration appointment. (insane) because it could be up to 90 days. He said something about the Governor making some sort of acceptance for COVID-19.
Sad when the people enforcing the laws have “Blind Compliance” and they don’t see the stupidity.
The Police are the very ones that should be objecting to having to make a Registration appointment. They should only allow people who already have the gun/approval to purchase make an appointment when they pick up the permit!

I feel you and I know it is frustrating at some point. The police will not object like what you think as it seems it's a delaying tactic to get it more harder. We have to calm down and think of a way to go with the process they put out there.
P.S. I'm still looking for a swap, I need to swap my Oct 30th Appt to reg to an earlier date, I'm looking for any day from Sep 9 to Sep 23. Mahalo

If you just picking up your permits they open at 745 last I went. No more appointment for that.

To set up:
Click on the start button in lower left of your screen, type settings, then enter
Then click system
Click "clipboard" and turn the clipboard history on.
Open a note pad then type what u want to copy and copy it, one at a time.
If I remember right you will need these copied separately
-First Name
-Last Name
-Phone number
-Email address
-number of handguns
-number of long guns
Home address.
Once u copied them all press the windows (lower left of keyboard) + v and the clipboard history will show.
Now, u gotta get an appointment date. Once you click and the form opens do the following
Click in the first field (First Name) then hit windows button+v then click on your fist name in the history window and it will instantly fill on the form
Click in next field (last name) then hit windows + v then click on your last name in the clip history
Keep doing this until all fields filled then submit. Practice till u can do it fast. It's way faster once u learn how.
I figured this out cause every time I saw a new time, it would disappear before I could finish filling out the form and submit. Got frustrated after about 4x it was sniped from me. Hope this helps someone. PM me if u want help setting this up.
Once u have an appointment, add it to your calendar. Open the details and click on the link. It will open a page u can reschedule. Hit reschedule threw out the day to keep checking for new openings. Once it appears, you can just grab it without filling out the form again. I keep looking every day for cancellations No luck yet but hopefully soon.

After all these months, due to circumstance, this appointment won't work for me. I cannot pick up the guns to get registered until 12 noon.
Actually I have to go there (HPD) first to pick up my permits, then I was going to get the guns and then back to HPD but the noon thing screws it all up. So, yeah.... Imagine the frustration..
If you want, I can meet you there when I get the permts (aqround 10:30am) and transfer the appointment to you but I don't know if they allow that or not so, up to you. I think I read somewhere here that both parties gotta show up. I hate to cancel online only for it to never show up for anyone else to use and it just gets wasted. Anyway, lemme know...

This. Do you have to go to the permitting side or the register side to transfer an appointment? My cousins going to give me a reg appointment and we always hanging out so getting together isn't a prob. My long gun permit is 16 days till expiration so they wouldn’t let me renew it till 14 days.
But HPD will tell you to pick up a firearm if you have a permit to acquire even if you don’t have an appointment to register. They’ll tell you to break the law but won’t look away from 2 days.

FYI, they started at 4 like I thought, and are coming out every 10 min. One thing to note. I tried using an existing reg hours appt to reschedule to new extended hour appt and it did not show, I think the two calendars are separate so you can only reschedule a reg hours for a reg hours one that appears and an extended hours for an extended hours when it appears.

Lastly I was told by HPD yesterday that if you have multiple guns to register ie 10 and you can only get an appointment for 1-3 still bring in all the firearms as they would rather have them registered then you waiting another 90 days

I have a permit to acquire for 1/22/21 at 11:00 I could use a registration of anyone had if not all good.
If this is for a handgun, you may want to ask them when you pick up the permit if it's okay to come back same day and bring all the guns to register. I have two friends who did this. HPD didn't seem to want unregistered pistols floating around out there. Since they were bringing their pistols back they also just brought their rifles same time and the guys were okay with it.
Worth a shot if you can't find an appointment.

I just got a PTA from someone who cancelled theirs and they immediately put my info in and was able to grab that same PTA.
After 2:30AM seems to work okay using the "cancel as me/reclaim as someone else" method.
I saw a Feb 22 PTA appointment appear at 2:18AM, and it was gone in seconds. Must be others up with the owls swapping reservations besides me.
I had 2 browser windows open -- one to cancel, and one to view available appointments. Canceled, refreshed available appointments 3 times to see the one I canceled, then immediately clicked it to keep anyone else from snagging it.
IMO, trying to coordinate with another person to take your appointment is risky. Just give the appointment "giver" your info, so only one person has to be ready to take the cancelled reservation. If you are just a little slow, you may miss it. Three to five seconds is all it seems to take for an appointment to vanish.
I would not be surprised if there are automated BOTs refreshing the reservation page every 5 seconds and filling out the appointment forms when they find one. There are so few fields to fill in, it would not be difficult to set up. I've done this in the past to "scrape" information from form-driven webpages on a recurring basis so I wouldn't have to do it manually.
Anyway, if you snooze, you lose. Omni proved that yesterday by canceling an appointment he meant to reserve for me. **POOF!** Gone in seconds. :wtf:

Easy enough to test my theory. I'll jump on the next appointment I see, then see if it still shows in the list. If not, then the record was locked for editing. Nobody can steal it at that point. First one to get the lock gets to submit the request.

BTW, if the person with the appointment doesn't care about the reservation they are giving away (not swapping with another person for a different date), they could just forward the notification email to the intended "new owner" of the appointment. Then THEY can stay up late, use the email's cancel link to free up the appointment, and do the re-reservation themselves.

Yesterday, I was offered a March registration appointment. I asked for, and they forwarded to me, the notification email from HPD Records and Identification Section.
I waited until the reservation snipers were asleep, then did the "Reservation 2-Step" -- Clicked the "Change/Cancel Appointment" link from the email & canceled, then remade the reservation for myself. I had a second browser window open to the correct search so I could quickly find and select it.
So, after completing my reservation, the original reservation holder should receive an email saying it was canceled, while I received a notification email for the new reservation.
This is a good method for swapping or just giving a reservation between 2 people. Seems to eliminate a lot of coordination and risk of the appointment being sniped out from under you.

Why pay for a registration appointment? The COVID Emergency Proclamation said the registration 5-day window was waived. Get an appointment for as early as you can get. No rush.

Does the law say you have to register a newly acquired firearm before you are allowed to sell it? I don't think so.
If you buy a gun legally, then I say you can turn around and sell it legally without registering it. I don't see how they can refuse to issue a permit for the second transfer. If the buyer gets a permit, then the transfer is legal.
They've tried to tell people they can't take a new gun to the range until it's registered, too. Bull Hockey!
I'm not a lawyer, but if I were you, I'd INFORM HPD (not ask them) that you are going to sell a newly transferred gun you own which hasn't been registered in your name yet. Ask what they need to make that process run smoother. They may offer an exception and let you come register right away. That's an option. Hopefully they figure that out.
Nothing they require should delay your buyer from applying for a permit to acquire (assuming you're selling a handgun). As long as the person you sell it to gets a permit, it doesn't matter who the registered owner is in their files. Permits and Registrations are two separate systems with two different purposes.

Rather than playing the "coordination game", you could forward your notification email from HPD to the person asking for the appointment. Then THEY alone can cancel and immediately rebook the appointment themselves at their convenience.
Much less effort for both, and it takes the burden off of you to coordinate and perform the cancelation.
I've done this a few times. Only one person has had the appointment swiped out from under them between cancellation and rebooking. Since they were doing both parts, I didn't feel guilty about them losing out. Luckily, they found another appointment for themselves soon after.

Just a quick note, the system may not allow you to cancel and make it available today. I found that in the past, when I tried to cancel the same day it never showed back up. Unlike if I canceled the night before. Maybe someone snatched it up, but same day, it was only if I met them at the station and told them I was giving them my appointment. Just a heads up, in case you try to cancel and it doesn't show back up on the site for the new person.

FYI. You can avoid the whole coordination game by simply forwarding the Records Division appointment notification or reminder email to the lucky recipient. They can then do the cancellation and rebooking all by themselves at their convenience.

It appears they make new appointments available weekdays between normal working hours at 10 minute intervals. The times they become available coincide with the appointment times: 8:00AM appointments will post at 8:00am, 8:10AM will appear at 8:10AM, etc. The dates will be 90 days in the future -- the maximum future date they offer.
I've seen others post that canceled appointments will be "dumped" for rebooking at certain times each day, but haven't seen that happen the days I looked. Maybe there were few to no cancelations those days?
It would be nice if there were a little communication from HPD to make this BS appointment process easier on us, but that's not going to happen anytime soon.

Does anyone know why HPD changed it so people can no longer cancel their appointments? That basically means if and when we even score an appointment it will only be the ones way far down the line now...

Maybe they got tired of people hoarding the appointments or selling them? I'm guessing if people want to swap now, they will have to go down and meet in person to give their appointment away to someone else now. That's sucks.

I sent an email to HPD after I saw the previous post and verified that an appointment I have no longer offers the option to cancel.
I asked what the process is to cancel now, and stated that self-service cancelation should remain part of the scheduling system.
I'll post what I get back.

I hope your shop doesn't charge fees. I see a bunch of really pissed off shop owners and customers already.
Lucky it’s my friends shop, so got a little give. But nothing we can all do now until they get it back or something.

Went to HPD today to pass on an appointment to a friend and I decided to ask what happened. So from what one of them heard. (Not 100% certain), might have been an IT upgrade error. Said they did an upgrade that was supposed to improve the system but it deleted the cancel button. So they are working on fixing it. Cross our fingers guys!
That was my guess/assumption -- some IT guy didn't know what he/she/it was doing (lot of that going around lately! :rofl: ).
No response on my email yet. I hope they fix it before I get a reply. OBE

Not sure what updates they could even do. It's a button to either allow or deny ability to cancel appointments. You can even set a timeframe.

Not really. The not sure part was because there is nothing with 100% certainty. I logged into the same "program's" backend and checked the settings.

Update. So I called and asked in general. Talked to the supervisor. It was NOT a fluke. This is the new system. Due to people selling appointments, now people need to call in to cancel appointments. So the days of getting appointments at random times and late nights is over. Must look while someone is there and canceling it from HPD themselves.

While I am glad this will stop the people selling I am upset that there is now a 90 day minimum wait time and I have to be psychic and see the future. I have a feeling hpd is going to get tired of getting plenty calls and find a new way of doing this. This will only make it worse as now I have to book an appointment every other week just so I know I have one incase I purchase something. Then call every other week to cancel. Quite a stupid system. Or worse they will have plenty no-shows.

You can call HPD to cancel your appointment. They randomly cancel during that day.

You can try call them and transfer it but they’ll possibly accuse you of selling appointments like they did to me when I was just asking questions about the new system. I have just went down to transfer since I helped friends out and it was faster to use my autofill info instead of putting theirs in when I was able to get it.

I cancelled my appt to reg. I had to call them and I asked when will this be made available? He didn't know since they just started to do it.

If the appointment is canceled & creates the notification email, then it ought to be available to rebook, too.

If you select "Change", you have to select an available appointment. If there are none other than your existing time shown, selecting that one doesn't do anything. It just lies saying it was changed, but you get no new notifications for either the "cancel" nor "appointment changed'.
I predict the next HPD update will remove the ability for us to pick an appointment. We'll have to go to HPD to sign up. ???

Although I sadly don't have a replacement appointment for you in early July as you mentioned, I have been trying to book an appointment for several months now nearly online everyday and haven't had any luck as all the available slots are always full.
