If I had known about these, I would’ve picked one up instead of the S&W M&P 15-22, more real-steel feel.

At over twice the price?   At that price, I'd rather buy a "real" AR-15!   :rofl:

If I were you, I'd be happy with the M&P15-22.  It gets the job done, uses cheaper ammo (if you have any), and is a great training platform, especially for minors.
