I have a 22LR conversion kit coming for my AR . its the CMMG kit. with the BCG and mags
will shooting 22LR out of a 5.56 barrel do any harm to the barrel?
i know they make 22LR uppers. should i just get a 22LR upper for it instead? only thing is cannot find any uppers online right now
what is your take on this?

Accuracy is going to suck with just a drop in conv kit. I found out the hard way that a lot has to do with the chamber cut. The best smiths that do this is Compass Lake. I had one for awhile and it was the best upper out there. Pricey but worth the feedback. I then took a break - sold it and got a CMMG dedicated upper. The CMMG was no where near the accuracy of the CLE. Sold it a few months ago. It was listed here. I might as well just gotten a drop-in kit .... yes it was not good at all. I finally got another CLE kit but just the barrel and bolt this time. It was about $500 but worth it. CLE uses a Douglas barrel and cuts their own chamber with a JGS reamer.
John Scandale at Keystone Accuracy makes a dedicated kit like CLE but bases his on the CMMG bolt. CLE bases theirs on the Army M261 bolt. The difference is that the M261 will hold the bolt open on last round if using a SLED. I think Scandale's one will hold open on last shot but you will need an adaptor.
I haven't shot any 22LR out of a 556 barrel. I can't imagine any damage from a LV bullet.

The CMMG barrel and bolt kit is available. Add a upper receiver, handguard, charging handle, muzzle device (optional), and some mags. I was looking at this along with the Better-Mag adapter from Redi-Mag that uses S&W M&P 15-22 mags to allow last round bolt lock and hold when switching mags.

You won’t hurt the barrel. If anything you will put very little wear and tear on it. Here are the issues shooting a .22LR out of a .223/5.56 barrel. The bullet for a .22LR is traditionally .223 in diameter. The barrel/bullet combination for .223/5.56 is traditionally .224. One thousandth doesn’t sound like much but it is enough to effect accuracy. The twist for a .22LR is traditionally 1 in 16. Which is pretty slow compared to today’s twists. Basically the .22LR is either subsonic in SV ammo and just supersonic in HV ammo. The standard weight bullet is 36gr-40gr. So not a great combination to have great accuracy. Don’t expect it to be a tack driver. But shoot it all you want. Oh, and BTW .22LR is traditionally very dirty and uses specific lube so shoot it a bunch (Maybe 20-25 rounds) to get the barrel “seasoned” for that brand of ammo.

My bolt replacement kits will at 50 yds group 2" from a 1 in 9 and 2.5" from a 1 in 7 using a red dot. Use mine for cheap practice shooting from different positions, warmup drills, combat drills, and fun plinking with my friends. Another advantage is you don't have to get another optic for it, just account for the added drop.
I wouldn't recommend it if you're just working on precision.
Won't harm the barrel, but it'll gunk up the action with lots of dirty 22lr ammo like it would with any 22lr rifle

thanks for all the input
i'm not looking for accuracy or precision. I am more looking to shoot cheap 22 and save my 223/556 ammo during this time of expensive/hard to find AR ammo
if I get 2-2.5 inches at 50 yards, I can live with that
i'm just looking to get some trigger time, and do some plinking with it. if its dirty, I can clean it. :shaka:

I just picked up a CMMG 22 Conversion kit and loved it. Was much more accurate than I thought it would be. 1” groups at 25 yards. Didn’t expect that.
Like Stangzilla, I just wanna shoot something with my AR without shooting my 556.

Just curious - what 22LR ammo you guys shooting from the CMMG kit? I have the kit also, but haven’t installed yet. Looking for any ammo suggestions/experience.

I haven't had problems with any high velocity ammo. I haven't tried standard velocity. I usually shoot automatch and blazers.

Thanks - just so happens I have a couple boxes of Winchester HV 22LR. Can't wait to finish my build and get some range time.
-
I shot mini mags without any problems.
I picked up some standard velocity but haven’t had a chance to go to the range.
-
I have one too but never tried it yet. Bought a load of federal blue box and regret it now after what everyone is saying about it...also got some cci velocitor to try in it.
-
these are the 22 ammo i'm going to try:
CCI minimag
CCI SV
Federal blue box
federal GMM HV
Armscor SV
Armscor HV
if any of those don't work in the AR, i'll feed them to my 22 bolt action and revolver. they aren't picky, they will eat any 22 ammo 8)

What version adapter you guys using (Bravo, Echo, India)? I managed to find a used Echo on GB a couple weeks ago. It's the stainless collar version. Came with the charging handle and forward assist insert. I also bought the better-mag adapter to use with the S&W 15-22 mags as I have a few of them already. Any experience w/o using the extra accessories and/or any feeding issues using the CMMG mags?

With the Bravo version I was able to shoot over 1,000 rounds of blazer failure free without cleaning.

I'm trying to get the Better-Mag adapter, but the website doesn't show shipping options for my address. Where did everyone get theirs from?

Same for me - I assumed they just didn’t ship to HI. I had to ship it to my buddy.

Runs good? Do you shoot 223/556 after to clear out any gunk?

I can’t remember where I got it from. It was around 1 1/2yrs ago but I’ll see if I can find the site.

Sorry. I forgot to mention that I built a dedicated upper for it so I bought the collar after.
I haven’t had any problems with it and even my wife and son enjoy shooting it.

Only other site I found was Brownells, but out of stock. I was able to order one through the manufacturer. I asked them to send me a PayPal invoice.

Shot the CMMG conversion kit yesterday with cci minimag and SV. Both functioned well. The SV POI was more near to my 223 POI without changing my optic windage or elevation not perfect but pretty close. The SV also was more accurate although I didnt shoot that much 22 yesterday. I also had federal HV 40 grain but didnt shoot it. Groups were maybe 3 inches or more at 50 yards
I'm satisfied with it. I'm going to use it for plinking and doing drills at close range on a friends farm. If I want better accuracy with 22LR, I can use my bolt action.

Glad to hear the SV’s were reliable and accurate. I bought a case last year but didn’t get around to shooting them yet.
