Rather than all of us endlessly calling our local gun stores I thought you guys might be able to report what you're finding when you drop in to visit, or if any of our dealers might want to post what they still have in stock and prices. Hopefully this gets some traction. Thanks in advance.

I didn’t check ammo, but at sec:
Had a lot of powder
Had large pistol and large rifle primers
Had small magnum primers - I think it was for pistol
For ammo I would call ahead if possible, even then, people are going into panic mode, buying cases, so in the 1 hour between your call and arrival, one or two people of the 10 in line could zero out the item you want
(At j Hara during their sale, I tried to get 6 cases of 22 but they only had 2 cases and 7 bricks. Yes I’m one of those that are panicking - but it’s my family’s fault that they all decided to suddenly take up shooting)

If you plan on paying with a credit card (don't mind paying the 3% CC fee), you can call most shops and pay in advance if they have what you want. Saves you from that "Last case just walked out the door" disappointment.
Debit cards can save you the 3% fee, but you don't want to use them over the phone unless you don't mind giving them your card's PIN. Only do this if you're a gambler!
-
I never thought of buying ammo over the phone with a cc!!!
I am doing that from now on!!

OGC used to do that a lot when they posted ammo sales.
CC was accepted for phone orders, but not Debit. Pick your purchase up when convenient.

What time you go? Thought they opened @ 7. Got there before 830 and didnt want to wait till 9. Thought they would have more than that being advertised.

Last week Friday about 10
-
Roys fishing Aiea got some 223 and 22lr
-
I heard the indoor ranges increased prices. 808 Gun Club is $30 for a box of 9mm, and Xring is $47.
-
Sort of like the SM groups that were posting what items of interest in stock and where. Pretty good info for folks that are tighter on time and/or supply.
Another one is "you get extra", but that's what the Classifieds for.
Already covered was SEC. Went there over the weekend and they had ammo, just not anything I was looking for.
Went by HGS over the weekend as well, but they had a line outside waiting to get in, so I didn't stop by. May try to run by there this week during off hours.
-

$30 isn't too bad because the pre Corona prices were $26 for each. For me personally, I refuse to pay more than $20 for ammo at an indoor range. Exception is CCW practice before a trip to Vegas. 808GC allows CCW draw and you don't have to take a class to "qualify". They just watch you for a few mins to make sure you're safe.
SEC is good at calling customers when ammo comes in. I put my name on their list for 9 and 223 and got calls each time.
-
Hgs has 9mm and 223 in stock

Hgs has 9mm and 223 in stock
Yup. He mentioned that he would post ammo on IG today. Expect LONG lines. Also he doesn't answer the phone, so sent him an email or DM on IG.
-
9mm is 90$ for 100rds 223 is 30$ for 20rds
-
9mm is 90$ for 100rds 223 is 30$ for 20rds
:shake: match 9mm?
-
I’ll sell off my gold dots or hst for that price
-
As of 13:50 HGS only had a handful of 9mm boxes left. Tried calling for pricing before driving down but no answer, but also didn’t want to miss out. Had I known the price, probably would’ve passed, but since I’m there... lol
-
BTW guys, you probably want to post the name of the store in your post since we don't know what you're talking about.
I went to 808 Gun Club today, pretty busy there. Caveat to their $30 box of 9mm, you can only buy one box of 50rnds per party. My 2 friends shot there this morning and split a box of 50 rounds. Was a very quick range session.
-
9mm is 90$ for 100rds 223 is 30$ for 20rds
That is absurd. Who is buying at these prices??
-
Check HGS on instagram. They are posting when they have ammo.
@HGS1911
-
Isn't just us.
I was talking to my cousin in Idaho.
They are ALL out. Unless you have a
non-standard eg 7.63X25 mm.
(C96 Mauser)
regular stuff can't be found unless people are
selling their private stash.
-
On another forum it was reported that Vista's backorders would probably take more than a year to fill.
-

People who didnt prepare

New gun owners also would reluctantly pay these prices to obtain ammo for their new purchase(s). One could argue that they would fall under the "didn't prepare" category.
At this point new gun owners have no choice and just hope they can stumble across some good prices.

Yeah, new shooters too
Speaking of new shooters, had 1 next to me recently shooting a LCR 38sp. I saw him shoot for 1 hour and not 1 hit on the target. IMO, seemed like he just needed to relax and release the death grip, although for a new shooter the LCR is not easy to shoot

Now that you mentioned this, I am guilty of not preparing enough as far as acquiring ammo for my SW29. I did some extensive shooting earlier before the covid thing and never bothered to restock significantly enough for situations we now find ourselves under with shortages, etc.
I haven't shot the revolver in like years, so I was missing the target embarrassingly. I needed to relearn how to grip, relax, etc. The range officer was watching me and offered some advice. He said I needed to stop my flinch.
So I downgraded to special ammo to try to relearn and get better. Then life got in the way and I haven't shot for a while and never bothered to stock up.
Now I'm screwed, lol! I only got 50 rds of special, no magnum rds, and I don't reload. :(
-
People who didnt prepare
I haven't bought at those prices, but I got caught in a little bit of an ebb and flow of shooting. I typically have a good amount of ammo on hand and buy when the stash gets to a certain point and I see good prices. Before COVID hit, I had been shooting 9 a lot and was buying often. But for 5.56/.223, I had been shooting some and had not seen prices in "my range". However, instead of buying at inflated prices, I've finally started preparing to handload. Supplies on much of that stuff is also suffering, but I have luckily been able to either find stuff in stock locally and online vendors.

Like I mentioned above, can start a "I'm looking for ______" thread to help each other out. Since COVID stuff started, I have given ammo to buddies. I've also traded ammo calibers (calibers that I don't shoot very often for calibers that I do) or have sold at what I bought it for. I was also talking/texting with a couple of forum members and long time shooters who were also caught short when COVID hit and we were able to get them setup. In this case, no harm in asking. I don't have much .357 Mag on hand, but I have a good amount of .38 SPL that I could certainly offer to one of the "good guys".

New shooters would likely pay high prices for ammo if they didn't know how much it cost before and ammo costs relatively little compared to the cost of a gun. They also tend to buy small quantities. The regular price for ammo is very low compared to what you're getting:. A well constructed cartridge made of copper, brass, lead, and "explosive" built to tight tolerances. I'd think a 9mm would regularly cost a dollar or two a round if I was a new shooter.

That is VERY true misconception for new shooters. I was told a long time ago that the firearm is likely to be the cheapest part of getting into shooting. That is for those that shoot regularly and not including heirloom or collector level firearms. Like that Combat Master STI in the classifieds! Damn AWESOME gun for sure and I would say worth a lot of $$$, but I'd also want to shoot the heck out of it!
That new shooters tend to buy ammo in small quantities is also another that I've observed. Many friends ask me to go shooting and they are like, can you pick up ammo the day before. Many view it like preparing for a BBQ, where you pick up stuff a few days before going.

The ammo prices have def saved me money because I'm not gonna get my 1911 in 45 anytime soon.

Gene at HGS got some nice 1911’s in stock for very reasonable prices.
Don’t know about 45 ammo though.
Took mine in to get the trigger swapped out.
Fawk. Shoulda looked at ammo. Think I only got like half a can of 45 left now that I think about it.
Picked Up 17hmr though. Still at pre-panic prices.
He said re-stocking and even his wholesale prices currently suck.
He’s the Man though.

I have 500 rounds of "remanufactured" 45 ammo from Bushido Arms that I picked up a while ago in anticipation of shooting more. :geekdanc:
The way things are going, dunno how much I will be shooting my 45. :(
-
How obscure does stuff have to be to still be in stock at this point? Is there still .22? 410? or is it pretty much all the weird obsolete surplus rounds at this point?

I've seen .22 lr in stock at a couple of shops. I saw .22 lr at SEC this past weekend. I'm planning on hitting up a couple other shops tomorrow for some things. I'll try to report what I see. Since you started this thread, are there any particular calibers that you are interested in?
The not wide used ammo thing was a consideration in the ammo rush/shortage in 2012/2013. For a while, only .40 S&W was available. .22lr stock took a licking IIRC.

Thanks for the info, but I'm not buying from HGS.

I think shooting is quickly falling outside of my price range regardless of availability unfortunately. Fortunately I stocked up on mini mags so I'm good for a year or two at my current rate of consumption. At this point I'm probably just following prices as a spectator sport.

So you're like this
;D
I understand regarding the impact of ammo pricing on shooting activities. For me, I had been shooting a lot of 9 prior to COVID, so I had stocked up. Then once COVID hit, I wasn't shooting as much. So I'm hoping that I can continue to shoot a bit until I have to really cut back 5.56.223 is similar, but less of a buffer. I'll probably cut back on shooting carbine sooner. I'm also considering picking up a .22 lr rifle to tide me over as well.

Or a 22 AR conversion like the CMMG one. Not very accurate at a distance but good for doing drills at close range

Oh yeah. I'm down for one of those. I'm not so concerned about uber accuracy. Though I have long wanted to get a .22 lr bolt action for challenge for accuracy.
-
SEC has 22 ammo, 38 sp
They said they are calling people from the wait list from june or July for AR ammo, so that list is long. I think I went on the list later than that

Yeah, I saw some FGMM .223 Rem in the back and they mentioned that was all waitlist ammo. I'm on the waitlist for some other ammo and other stuff, but it was good to see ammo on the floor, even if not for me. :(

My palmetto dedicated 22 upper is pretty accurate and reliable at 50 yds.
.22 is available ? Decent .22 ?
Pretty soon I’m either gonna be into my crap or my match ammo.
Mini mags are running thin.

I have a bunch of crappy .22 lr that my dad prob bought before I was born. Will they run in semi-autos? Dunno. That was one reason I still would like a BA .22 lr. Been side tracked with the "big brother" version.

SEC had 22 standard velocity today, they may have some minimags i'm not sure.
but i'm sure pretty soon 22 will be extinct

I must have missed you. I just left there.
Didn't see any mini-mags as I like that stuff. Had Stingers and StdVel stuff. Standard velocity was $9.94/box

i was there in the morning. i got some standard velocity bc i already have some minimags. i think there will be some tough times ahead for us 2A peeps
i went to pistol range yesterday but quit after about 75 rounds of 45acp bc i dont want to waste ammo. just enough to zero the red dot and shoot some extra for fun and practice. i would usually shoot more but tough times call for ammo restraint. really sucks. :'( :'( :'(

From today.
WGS had quite a bunch of ammo, but I'll call it random. I wasn't there for ammo, but I had a good long look. Had a variety of ammo, but not much of the common calibers. Most common, at least for me were:
30-06 (had quite a bit and variety of that)
AK ammo (guite a bit and variety of that)
.38 SPL (not sure what type)
Didn't see much .22lr, or at least stuff I would buy. Had plenty of random calibers. 6.5 CM, .41 Mag (I already have), etc. So they have, but depends on what you're looking for.
I went for powder and primers. They had the powders I wanted, but limit one per type. The didn't have the primers that I wanted, but they have. They are limiting some of the primers to small amounts.
HGS - Long line outside. Didn't even go in. Just drove by.
Bushido - Pretty much out of common calibers. Usually a consistent source, but he's running on his "emergency" stash for some components.
I was gonna run by Danger Close, but will run by there another day.

OGC has 45 auto and match grade .223 in stock.

I noticed Danger Close Tactical changed their website. Unfortunately the google search directs to a store page that I can not for the life of me find a way to navigate to the in-stock ammo page. (I had to go to Dwayne's Facebook to find the link to the ammo page.)

Just ordered 4 boxes of .22.
Didn’t want to horde. Get ‘em while they’re hot.
Bricks were not available.
Hyper velocity CCI. Gonna test those puppies through my M&P pistola.

It's only one guy with his daughters or wife sometimes helping out so I'm not sure how often he's getting to it. Hopefully somebody who drops by can ask him and report back.
-
Reports across the nation are that stores that used to get pallets and cases of ammo just get a few boxes nowadays. Everyone's production lines are making 5.56 and 9mm so that's why less common calibers are limited too.

good stuff. I got some before and was a good comfortable shooting ammo. I would say recoil is in between the 44sp and 44mag. uses starline brass too. price isn't bad either. i'd get more but i get bills to pay too

I actually have like one box of 44 mag SP and one of the 44 SPL cowboy loads. I don't really forsee shooting my .44 much. If anyone is in dire need, LMK. The 44 Mag is Blazer, to no can reload. :(

I was at Sportsman’s Warehouse today and they had one box of Velocitors that had been pushed behind the “Limit of Ammo Purchase” sign. So I thought I’d try them out. Last time I was there I found a box of of 22 magnums behind the sign. I snagged those ass well.

I dropped by SEC yesterday. A great shout out to Stangzilla for letting me know he saw some .44 ammo on the shelves.
I hoped they had .44 specials but they didn't. They had some premium hunting rounds that were too expensive. Besides that, all they had was one box of Blazer HP and about 15 boxes of Federal American Eagle 240 gr. JSP. I bought 3 boxes. $55.20 each.
If anybody needs .44-40 they have 2 or 3 boxes left.
I was in a rush but the ammo shelves looked very empty. I did see some CCI .22's but couldn't make out what type. There was no line when I went at about 2pm. There were about 5 people in the store.
I didn't ask about .223/5.56 and 9mm since it was already reported that there is a wait list. I did ask him if there is a limit on the ammo I was buying and he said not right now and not sure if there will be a limit on the less popular ammo.
I plan to visit WGS to see if they have .44 specials. Then I'll drop by Young Guns to see what kind of .44 mags they have. They already told me they don't have .44 specials right now.
My wife's eyes got real big then narrowed into a mean look when she saw my 3 boxes of ammo. Little does she know I plan to buy more here and there in the future.

My nephew is still hurting for 9mm since he never stocked up before the panic buying set in. And he goes to class constantly and trains shooting his EDC gun. So Uncle Inspector gave him the last 200 rounds of 9mm I had left. That was on Saturday. So a friend of mine here can’t find 9mm either. And I told him this story last night and he gave me a funny look like I was a complete idiot for giving up every last round of 9mm to my nephew because he didn’t stock up when he had the chance. So I told him not to worry, I already have 600 rounds to replace what I gave my nephew. After he picked his jaw up off the floor he started asking me where I found that much ammo and how much I paid for it and where can he get some.
I guess I never told him previously I roll my own. He started begging me to sell him some and I had to explain that legally I couldn’t do that. He thought I was kidding. But I offered to teach him how to reload. I don’t think he appreciated the offer much.

I've traded and even given some close friends ammo. Other than that, I'm keeping ammo for my use. I am going to start loading for 9, but not for a few months, while I wait for components to come back from backorder. I'm ok on ammo stores for 9 for a while though, so :geekdanc:

I did the same for a close friend who is new. He had a shotty, but no ammo. Gave him a box of slug and a few of bird shot. I don't have enough buck shot to spare. He also got an AR, so gave him a 20rd box of that.
Then that fricken Kommie got an AK, I don't got any ammo for that, so screw him.

I did the same for a close friend who is new. He had a shotty, but no ammo. Gave him a box of slug and a few of bird shot. I don't have enough buck shot to spare. He also got an AR, so gave him a 20rd box of that.

20 rounds of 5.56/.223? That's quite a lot. . . ;D
I don't have shotgun ammo. . . (hint hint hint)
Well, maybe like 5 rounds each of buck and slugs and a box of birdshot.

Tokunagas in Hilo had a good variety of ammo couple weeks ago.

Nice try, Unless he was under 18

It is under Federal law that I cannot sell my ammunition, not AZ law. The fact that I made the ammunition. And if I sell the ammunition that I made that makes me a manufacturer and that requires an FFL 06 to be a legal manufacturer. I cannot sell my handmade ammunition to anyone legally without it.

Federal law requires a license to manufacture ammunition as a business. You can make ammunition for yourself or give it to someone for free. Feds aren't going to come after you for selling to a family member. Or they could buy the components and you reload it. Or you buy it and they reload it with your equipment.
Bushido would be a better source for info.

You should do a cost breakdown of prices for basic reloading equipment & ammo components.
Then calculate how many rounds it would require at today's prices for him to reload so it repays that startup cost.
I've seen estimates of about $340 to get started with basic equipment for pistol calibers. Kits containing most of the components included in the $340 list can offer a discount in a wide range of prices and what's included, roughly $150 - $450 price range for a kit.
$340 is about what I see people spending on 1,000 rounds of bulk 9mm, give or take. If your friend has that to spend on ammo, buying reloading gear would be an investment to mitigate shortages and rising prices.
I know the ammo components vary in price, too. You'd be a better judge of what that costs per 1,000 rounds of reloads vs. 1,000 rounds of manufactured ammo.
Anyway, the economics of reloading becomes more enticing as prices increase and availability decreases.
Then again, maybe your friend heard you were giving away ammo, and he only wanted a handout? I've had "friends" like that. Keyword: "had".

Are the primers, powder, heads still available? I heard in HI, there is a shortage of those too.

its a family business, so its packaging is kinda low budget but its packed well and ships pretty fast considering all the covid delays nowadays

Primers have dried up a long time ago here on the mainland. I would stock up on these fast and hard if you can. I check every day and SPP and SRP have not been available for months anywhere. I heard the reason is every primer manufactured is being used in 9mm and 223 production. Once they are gone on island it will be a while before you get more in stock. Powder is still shipping but just not in stock in the quantities we are all used to. I would buy when you can find it. If you don’t have 6 months to a years worth of primers you will run out if you don’t slow down your shooting. Heads are not so hard to find. But some manufacturers are always out such as Montana Gold. But the manufacturers that sell plated and powder coated bullets are barely keeping up with demand. If you are willing to pay full retail Sierra, Nosler, Hornady, Speer, etc are still available but may be a little hit and miss at times. Once fired and new brass is readily available. Tho I have noticed certain caliber such as 9mm, 357, 223 and 308 can be hit and miss at times.

I was able to find (or a buddy was able to find) some LFP in stock recently. WGS had some Magtech that they were looking to get rid of, but I already had a bunch already. I'm on waitlist for SPP, but I have a good amount of factory ammo and also buddies that have. I'm still looking for a little more Varget and 8208, but I have a bunch of Titegroup "spoken for".
Extreme didn't have an option for shipping to HI when I checked recently. I have a backorder in for one company and may check out Everglades (thanks to Stang).

Everglades is a good place. I am testing my first batch of Berry’s Bullets. They appear to be much higher quality than the Speer I just finished giving to my nephew. They appear to be similar in quality to Xtreme. So far I was impressed with the Speer in my semi autos but I found them to be wanting when I shot them through my revolver. So no more Speer for me. If these Berry’s do the same as the Speer I am giving up altogether on plated bullets.
I love all the powders you are trying. Titegroup is my favorite pistol powder followed by Unique.
Let me know how the loading goes.

I follow mrgunsandgear he always posting 556 deals that are online but I know it don't help us out at all obviously they don't ship to Hawaii. But there's some decent deals out there Ranier Arms has 1000 round "battle packs" of 556 for 749.99 which is 74 cents a round. There's ammo out there.

OGC pretty barren, they were pushing the last of the .22LR "we dont know when we will get more', they had one box of Remington cheapo lead nose 500 rnds when I left.

Any word on 12g buck and slug price and availability?
-
A friend of mine just bought two boxes of #9 birdshot (25 shells per box) from a LGS for around $62.00 per box = over $125.00. For 50 shells of birdshot!
:wtf:
These boxes were going for almost 1/10th of that not too long ago . . .
That would mean that my #1 buckshot (if I had any) would be going for around $12.00 each (per shell).

Just came from there. They had lots. Good to see them (or other shops) getting ammo in. Selling for price too high for me, but not that bad and can hopefully get some folks that need ammo.

you should have bought and sold in the classifieds for $100 a bag...
-
SEC mentioned above had a good amount of powder. Picked up my LRP that I got on the list for maybe a couple of weeks ago, so good to see supply coming in. They had some random small rifle and pistol primers on the shelf, but overall pretty barren. Lots of powder on hand, but the 1# cans and 8# jugs. Good selection of IMF and Hogdon. No R15 though. Some random rimfire, but not .22 LE, or at least the ones I would normally buy.
5.56 in stock as mentioned above, but limit on how much per day. I think it was a decent price.
Went by WGS and picked up another can of Varget. Some random primers, but only selling small amounts. Sounded like they were putting together an order of powder and primers when I was there. No idea on timeline, but sounded like they were ordering based on that their supplier was showing as available. So I may swing by there here and there to see when they get their order in.
Overall things still crazy. I’ve been lucky to find reloading supplies that I need locally and online, so hopefully no panic on ammo for me. Some prices I’ve been seeing have been :o ::)

The way Biden wants to heavily tax and restrict the manufacturing and sales of ammunition your prices might just be a bargain.
I plan to buy as much as I can before that jerk takes office.

I see Danger Close Tactical has some new items up.
45 acp Hyra Shok 210 grain jhp
224 Valkyrie 75 grain fmj
38 Special +P 125 grain jhp

CCI Pistol Match 40 gr (50 rounds for $10.23 though)

Ran by HGS and Roy’s today.
HGS has ammo in the shelf. Another “random caliber” selection with maybe handful of boxes. Not what I would normally buy, which is 9 and 5.56, and .308. They have some lighter gr .308. Lots of 6/6.5mm, 7mm, .300 WM, 30-06, etc.
Roy’s about the same as HGS. I recall seeing .45 Auto as about the closest I would buy. They had .22, but didn’t see what types. They still had Win LRP, but not much else. No SPP :(
Thought about picking up some 30-06 to shoot my 1903 and then reload for the Garand. Might get there eventually 😝
-
Stopped by SEC today to pick up powder. They have lots of powder, both for rifle and pistol. Some primers, but LRM and others that I don’t need.
Still have 5.56. Selling $13.99/20 (or around there) and I think limit 200. They had a good amount. Lots of .22lr, which I think was std velocity. Some random “other calibers” too, but none that I was looking for. They did have some 30-06, but not really looking to buy that. At least not yet.

You obviously don't know the secret handshake, so we aren't allowed to divulge that information. :geekdanc:
During the Obama era, when ammo became scarce as hen's teeth, Roy's was a great open-secret location for ammo when all other local sources were totally sold out. Keeping it hush-hush was good for those who needed a box or two at a time for the range. They placed a limit of 2 boxes at that time if memory serves, I think maybe you could buy 4 boxes if you bought 2 calibers x 2 boxes each. I have no idea if that's still the deal. Been awhile.
If you really want to know, I'll PM my PayPal address for a modest donation. :shaka:
Just kidding. It's Roy's Fishing Supply in Aiea near the Goodwill Store. Go down the street that runs next to the Goodwill building as you turn off of Kam Hwy, and bear left as you enter the parking lot at the end of that culdesac.

It sure looks like it's headed that way. I checked out Kaleo's website after Urusai's heads up. Yes, the prices are roughly 3 times higher per round.
Even Kaleo mentioned the prices are nuts. I just appreciate them trying to provide ammunition to those that want it.
Who knows what will happen. 556/223 might even get more expensive or just unavailable altogether. For those of us looking for ammo, this might be a tough call.
-
Good comment Quietshooter, but where do we look for overseas sources? I don't mind korean Brazilian or Filipino sources and of course NATO member production but those are tough to find too. I see supplies increasing only when our "civil war" ceases. Thank you Antifa and BLM. :grrr:

I am in NO WAY implying that I would buy it and would never break any state or federal laws, but there are shipping containers full of fireworks coming from China every year.
When those dudes figure out that there is a huge gap in the market for affordable ammo I can only imagine the outcome. When everything is illegal or near impossible to find, people will adapt and those chinese smugglers are going to make a killing (hell the state lawmakers who are in China's pocket will probably get a hefty kickback as well).

In the early 90’s I bought 15 cases of Norinco 9mm. The UPS gal was not happy with me. It was 124gr FMJ. It was loaded quite hot but it was great ammo. It was accurate and I never had any failures. I shot all but 600 rounds of it. I forgot about it and found the 12 boxes of it about 3 years ago. It still shot very well until it started to turn green. After that I started to see failures to fire about one or two percent.
It was all brass ammo but the first 13k rounds I bought were not considered reloadable. It was boxer primed but the brass was quite hard and brittle. I would see a lot cracks in the brass after sizing. So I threw away all the brass. Then the last 2k rounds I bought was stated as reloadable on the box. While it was boxer primed, the primer pockets were larger than standard small pistol primer but smaller than large pistol primers. The brass was not as brittle and did not crack when I resized it. But it would not hold a primer. I gave up. It was as cheap as steel cased ammo so I didn’t care.
What did I pay for it? I paid 5 cents a round and then near the end before it was banned from being imported I paid 6 and 7 cents a round and the last case I paid 10 cents a round.

Just got a great deal from Dwayne at Danger Close Tactical for some 7.62x39 norma brass and brown bear subsonics. Throughout covid he has had some of the most consistent, honest and fair pricing. He also has his entire in-store inventory online and available to purchase. If you wanna get in on the ammo drops you gotta add DCT on facebook and/or add yourself to the mailing list via his website.
I'll take his website subscription over Facebook anyday.

Looks like Young Guns finally ran out of 556 & 9mm. They still have some 22lr. Security Equip still calling people on their wait list for 556. Seems like this shortage won’t be ending anytime soon. :(

With that video in mind, what would be the sort of logistics of someone starting their own full size production line for let's just say primers.
How long would it take to tool up and start producing? If ever there was a business opertunity, I would think this is one. I realize how much of a pain it would be, procuring base materials, setting up machines, permits, hazmat issues, zoning, employee training, hr, paying off politicians, finding investors, did I forget anything?

Are you talking about a major brand doing this, or starting up a competing brand?
Marketing for a new brand
Taxes
Location (Some states are more firearm/ammo business friendly)
Available labor
Product Liability Insurance
Legal Fees (I imagine legal action to shutdown ammo factories are not uncommon)
Regulatory and ATF compliance
Shipping (commercial carriers, company trucks, ...)
Distribution network
R&D
Quality Control
Physical Security/Surveillance Systems
Infrastructure (Commercial water, sewer, electric and trash pickup costs are different than residential)
Investors?? Stock offering??
Labor is a huge cost for any production/factory business. Having a large population of low-skill labor helps keep wages affordable.
Automation can help, but requires more startup capital.
Need higher-paid people with training and experience to setup and run the production line, manage ordering and shipping, setup QA processes and so on.

I'll take that as a probably not going to happen, especially around here. I guess nothing is easy. Wonder if it even would be worth while.

You'd still have to compete with ammo shipped from other places, once the shortage is over. With the cost of running any business in Hawaii -- excise taxes, storage, permits for powder and primers (OGC doesn't bother to stock powder and primers because of the crazy regulations) -- and the high cost of labor here vs, say, Mexico, I doubt you'd be in business for long.
Look at how few factory jobs there are in Hawaii. Just getting raw materials or parts is going to drive up the cost of finished goods.
We do hospitality and tourism. This is not a state known for its industrial base.
That's not even touching on the environmentalist whackos and anti-gun idiots doing all they can think of to shut you down.
Hawaii needs to diversify their economy, but I don't see ammo manufacturing being well received.

Primers are the hardest thing to make and transport. You're handling sensitive explosives. So not going to see primer plants pop up all of a sudden.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210123/5ed0824c18fe0e37e3ea85fb262de3dd.jpg)

Many been saying diversify for decades now. Gambling bill comes up and many "hawaiians" say no. Same with pakalolo bills.

For the places that still have 22lr, what is the going rate?
It was about $50 for a brick in November. I’ve heard it is now like $80-100 for a brick....is that right?

YG's rationed you to two hundred rounds but I think I payed $7 (100rd) for minimags.

That’s about right per the Classifieds section

That's a good price. I paid $10 per 100 mini-mags. At another LGS. I thought the $10 was fair, considering.
-
$7 for 100 minimags is cheap today. KGS was selling 36 gr HP 22LR for $80 a brick. Don't recall the brand, but it wasn't CCI. Anyway he is sold out.
-
Back in June last year I paid $28 for a brick of .22 LR. I bought 10 bricks and am glad I did.

From the way it was explained to me by a dealer, they buy by the pallet months out. Once it's delivered, whatever they paid is where they have to price it at a minimum, plus shipping, fees and overhead. Add profit, and you should be getting as good a deal as they can offer.
If they have orders being filled at prices from 6-12 months ago, you're lucky. Assuming they don't jack add a bit more profit for current market, you'll get the pre-craziness pricing until that delivery is gone.
Anything ordered after that is subject to whatever the manufacturer's and distributors charge. I posted a comment on another topic saying how one company announced a 3-15% price hike in April 2021. Any preexisting orders will be adjusted for the new prices after a given date. So, ordering early may not protect against all increases in prices.
Then there are the distributors. They can put older orders at the bottom of the pile. When the newer (more expensive) orders are filled, then they'll fill the ones at older prices -- you hope. There seems to be no real protection against price fluctuations. You order at high prices, you might lose money if prices drop. If you order at lower prices and prices rise, they could delay your order for a long time.
Anyway, if YG or any shop sells at lower prices than the market is bringing, it's probably because they ordered it at pre-COVID/pre-BLM/pre-Biden prices. Once it's gone, IF they can get more, it won't be that cheap until the market balances out again.
That's part hear-say, and part my opinion. It's my understanding FWIW.
-
Shipping can be an issue too with the reduced amounts of ammo. If a store gets 30 boxes (not cases) of ammo, the shipping and cert fees could be like $300 (I dunno what it is), in this case would be $10 shipping per box.
-
$7 for 100 mini mags is a deal!
I’m kind if shocked that non mini mag is now going for about $80/brick. I don’t recall 22lr being that expensive after sandy hook but my memory isn’t the greatest
I guess I’ll take up archery and play more tennis

Remington was not making much ammo in the past because of the ammunition surplus in the past couple years wasn't profitable for the bankrupt Remington. The company was bought in October and they are now ramping up for full production which takes time, and there is a shortage of raw resources making it difficult. Even stuff like the coin shortage is competing for resources. There's a shortage on primers so they are filling ammunition production needs before selling to reloaders.

Can anyone confirm if any dealers still have #7-7.5 low brass birdshot?
Used to pick up cases from SEC for about $60, but haven't had time to go down and check out what's available or give them a call.

Anyone care to share the current situation with ammo availability and prices?
Last post was in February so just wondering if anyone visited any LGS and scoped out prices and ammo availability.
Haven't been able to go out and check it out for myself. Mostly interested in .44 mag, .44 special, 5.56/.223 and .22 LR.
Thanks for any input. :shaka:

The last time I bought 9MM ammo was 124 gr FMJ Blazer Brass at Front Sight in Oct 2019 for $7.25 and I thought that was expensive. But I also used to think paying almost $4 for a box of 20 7MM REM MAG in 1967 was expensive.

Guy at work came back from Young Guns after lunch yesterday with two boxes of 9mm, said he paid $40 a box, limit two boxes. He was going back today for two more boxes to shoot tomorrow. I sold him two boxes for $20 a box, saved him half his $$$ and doubled my $$$.

Even reloading is expensive. The only target or practice shooting I do nowadays is with airguns. BBs and pellets are still cheap and I have nearly a 100 CO2 Powerlets. Any shooting I do that burns powder has to hit flesh and blood. In the past 2 weeks I did shoot 3 pigs and 3 mongoose in my backyard. I use the pigs for dog food.

While you are right in that respect, I think we as a community SHOULD do what we can to help each other out. IF we as a community came together to help each other out. It would make it more bearable for a lot of us. For those who have factory chamberings they at least have the possibility of having a LGS having some in stock. For ppl like me, l HAVE TO reload due to a lot of my chamberings are for wildcat cartridges. So l dont even have the possibility of walking into a gunshop and finding some 338-408 CT or 30-416 Rigby on the shelf lol.
But if a fellow shooter/hunter is in need and we can help them out then we should. If can, can but if no can, no can! I try to help others if l can in any way l can. Up until now I've GIVEN AWAY over 50K primers and 150# of powder to others in need. I've asked nothing in return other than not to resell what I've given. I've met great ppl and made great friends in doing so and that is worth its weight in gold.
That being said it's gonna be a rough ride. I hope it gets better asap and hope we stick together and help each other thru these trying times!!
Press on!!!

went YG's yesterday looking for 22 ammo. they only had match grade for 15 per box of 50, so i passed on that
but they do have really good beef jerky. desert star beef jerky. soft kind jerky. highly recommend that jerky :geekdanc:

Tokunaga's in Hilo had a good supply of CCI Stanglers, formerly known as Stingers for $20 a box of 100, limit 1 box per day.
-
Been noticing a lot more ammo in stock now. Just prices still up there. HGS, WGS, YG all had 9mm and 5.56 and a lot of other calibers i havent seen for a while.
-
I went YG last week, just to see what kinds of handguns they had. They weren't that busy plus they limit how much people in the store but there was nobody outside.
So maybe that was part of the reason but we had a no rushed discussion of the various handguns they had. It's amazing that you can have your mind set on one particular gun then change your mind when you get to handle and discuss the other types available.
Anyway, the only 5.56/.223 they had at that time was Federal "Power Shok" 55 grain SP in .223. One box was $29.95 for 20.
Anyone know how much that ammo was going for pre-Covid ammo shortage? Also is this considered "good stuff?" Seems like a rip off price to me but I bought 1 box in thanks for their time discussing handguns.
Plus I like to have different types of ammo of the same caliber instead of just range/bulk ammo.

Those Federal Powershoks aren't considered target ammo. Most people use them for hunting as they're soft points meant to expand upon impact. Most range loads are typically full metal jacket (FMJ) that don't need the ability to expand. I think that price is about par for the times. Pre-pandemic price would probably been around $20 or just under. In the calibers that I've used for hunting, they were accurate enough and got the job done. For 223, if not for hunting, I'd save them for self defense.

Yeah, that's my plan as far as what I would use them for (as defense ammo). Next time I visit YG I might buy another box (for some reason they only limited me to one box) and shoot some to see how they are.
-

My son in law and I went shooting 2 weeks ago. He'd held all the handguns in my safe, and we took the top 6 that he thought he might like to have.
At the range, he ran 2 mags through the 6 guns in order of "most liked" to "least liked". Turned out that his "most liked" before shooting was his "least liked" (ranked dead last) after shooting.
Even if you think you like a gun when handling it at the gun shop, you never really know until you shoot it. Of course, if you're one of those guys who buys handguns 2-4 times a year which then get sold in a year or two as UNFIRED so you can afford the next gun on your list, it really doesn't matter if it might have felt good shooting. :geekdanc:

If you think prices are dropping and supply is catching up to demand, better to buy individual boxes now versus bulk cases. As prices fall, just buy what you need until you see a good deal on bulk close to pre-Covid prices.
If you're using a full case every month or so, that's different. I'm talking about buying a case and using it over many months. You'll save money by waiting to buy larger quantities, even if that means you aren't getting the bulk discount (assuming there is one).
-
I just recalled what the guy at YG was telling me and I thought I'd share this. (And I'm not sure if he was just telling me something to hear just to satisfy my curiosity.)
I was asking him how come his ammo shelves are so sparse (he had only 1 type .223 ammo and no 5.56) when I see lots of guys on the internet posting videos of the ammo stores with returning ample stocks of all types of ammo.
He said they repeatedly submit their orders to the suppliers and are relegated to whatever they send. He said the suppliers tend to supply the big box retailers and the small gun shops get whatever is leftover.
He also said they order firearms also and many times there just isn't any firearms available.
