Hi guys & gals,
We have a SNAFU at the Range.
The Pistol Range Lead Remediation Project has run much longer than projected.
Pistol Range will be closed on Wednesday Nov. 25th. And possibly open on Thanksgiving Day, depending on the test results.
Best to check out Official website for latest updates: http://www.honolulu.gov/cms-dpr-menu/site-dpr-sitearticles/38579-koko-head-shooting-complex
This is going to push the entire schedule back at least a week. They are “scheduled” to start on the Rifle Range on Monday Nov. 30th, and it will take at least two weeks to complete.
Sorry for the inconvenience.
Hope you all have a Happy & Safe Thanksgiving!
Aloha,
Mike Muramoto

So I presume the pistol range is open for real now?

The ROs told me that the "remediation" basically involved vacuuming and spraying down all of the ceiling and bench surfaces. No removal of lead from the backstop or berms.

I didn't notice until now, but looks like they fixed the backstop sometime between June and August. In June the lanes were all rutted out. In August it's all smoothed out.
I'm not sure why it took over a week just to wipe down the pistol range. I figure it'd take a day or two. And I dunno why they cleaned the outdoor range, it'll just get all leaded up again in a couple months anyways.

Hey, 180k is good money for that kind of work. Coupla guys cleaning the place over a month's time could clear maybe 80k each? Not bad for a month's work.

With the delay on the pistol side, the rifle isn't scheduled to reopen until the 15th. That may change so check the link Macsak linked in his post:

Yeah I should have noticed that link before I left the house.

$146k is the price for the contract to remediate the lead
if they are just spraying down the benches and areas where we shoot from, that's a ton of money for that

Crazy power of unions. . .
Which if any union bruddahs are reading this, I support fully.

Anybody know how often this remediation is done?
How do they recapture all the lead fragments in the ground? Would love to see them in action and the kinds of machines they use.
Just curious but how come nobody cleans up all the brass right in front of the benches? It looks like it has been collecting there since the beginning of time.
I figure there is a lot of lead dust in those areas.
