From Sundance at Conservative Treehouse... sounds like business as usual in D.C. swamp...
https://theconservativetreehouse.com/2020/12/21/house-voting-today-on-5600-page-pork-filled-covid-package-no-one-has-read-mcconnell-wants-unanimous-consent/
House Voting Today on 5,600 Page Pork-Filled COVID Package No-One Has Read, McConnell Wants Unanimous Consent…
My rough review shows an approximately 70/30 split on the $900+ billion COVID package. Approximately 30 percent +/- of the bill will actually help working class families and businesses on Main Street. Approximately 70 percent of the bill will go to political donors, special interests, environmental lobbyists, K-Street groups who wrote the bill, foreign interests, Wall Street and corporate beneficiaries.

New York's Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) received $4B in the March CARES Act.
This stimulus bill give the MTA ANOTHER $4B, with a new provision that that MTA not lay anybody off.
With everything in NYC on lockdown, you'd think the MTA would have less ridership to serve, and thus fewer positions needing filling and fewer trains to maintain and operate.
Glad our taxes can help them pay the bills there. So glad Amazon didn't create a bunch of jobs there. I doubt Amazon would have survived with the pandemic -- everyone ordering everything they need online.
-
What about our rail? The City and Hart could use $4B right about now.

Trump did tweet he wanted a stand alone $1200 a while ago, but u know orange man bad right.
When AOC tweets something smart about the 5k page bill, u know u fucked up.

Our rail isn't operational, so there's no impact to commuters if the money dries up.
In NYC, MTA is vital to their residents and visitors since most don't drive in the city -- if ever.

The stimulus bill is suppose to serve the domestic needs, of its people, not to maintain the US empire's global hegemony or support its vassal states. :wtf:

I wonder if the RINOs in Congress would be more willing to shift the electors to Trump if he signs the Stimulus Package, less so if he vetoes it.
I could see him signing to keep from pissing-off the party members who may be the difference between winning or losing the contested election.

Just learned something else I didn't know (2020 is a great year for unusual situations in government procedure and law!).
US Constitution -- Article I, Section 7, Clause 2 -- provides for a rarely used "Pocket Veto" for the President.
Ordinarily, the President has 10 days to sign a bill into law, or it becomes law without his signature. He also has Veto Power, in which case he sends the bill back to Congress. If that happens, Congress can override the veto with a 2/3 "super-majority" Congressional veto vote, which they seem to have already based on the House and Senate voting numbers initially.
However, if the Congress is not in session, the President has no need to actively veto the bill. He just holds the bill "in his pocket", and the day the Congress adjourns, the bill goes *poof!* -- ceasing to exist.
The current Congress can only remain in session at the latest until Jan 3rd. On Jan 4th, the new Congress will be sworn in. if the bill is not presented to the President tomorrow, Dec 23rd, then there's not enough time for Congress to act before adjourning. Given that the bill just passed this evening, and that the bill is so large, it's improbable the bill will be ready to present to the President before end of day tomorrow.
If the Dec 23rd "deadline" expires, McConnell's warning to Trump that the Congress has the votes to override a Presidential Veto is moot.
Checkmate! Maybe Nancy shouldn't have dragged her heels for so long?!  :geekdanc:

Best thing Trump can do is cut all the waste in the spending bill and transfer it to increase the $600 checks. Still a waste of money, but it spotlights the waste in government and no one can say anything to counter it.

So Trump wants $2,000 stimulus checks? He's an idiot. I'd support some targeted covid funding that makes sense like money to buy and administer vaccines, targeted increase in unemployment benefits, and targeted business loans and grants, but the $600 stimulus much less $2,000 is a waste.

So you’re for the other stuff in the bill? It wasn’t the “idiot Trump” that put all that other crap in there.
Too many Americans falling for what is just another distraction by Congress not doing what is needed for their constituents, and trying to pull fast ones for their agenda.

Correct. The COVID Stimulus Bill was attached to the Omnibus Spending bill that created a total package cost of $2.3T. They were combined so all the pork and waste would pass. On its own, the Omnibus spending bill was/is complete garbage. $1.4T has nothing to do with COVID. $900B is COVID Stimulus.
In addition to the pork and waste, the bill also required the President get Congress' approval to invoke the insurrection act. Why was that also included in this bill? Could it be a way to take the option away from Trump as a potential means for staying in office? If not, then why now, and why in this particular bill?

But if Biden takes over in a month, why add that? They must know something. Especially Harris who has yet to resign her seat.
Trump did say besides the $2000, there is lots of crap and wants the bill redone. I thought he just mentioned the $2K and nothing else.

I made no mention of the other stuff in the omnibus spending bill. There is nothing special about the waste in this year's bill because it's in there every year. The worst part about it is it's considered a "regular" part of the annual budget.
Most of the covid stimulus bill is not needed and it adds to the national debt which needs to be paid back by us at some point, through taxes , cut in earned benefits, or inflation. The $2,000 check is a loan or welfare depending where your at on the income scale. Same with the unemployment benefit increase, the business grants, etc. Not everyone needs it and it incentivizes states to lockdown when not needed, adds to unemployment and less productivity, and need for big government.
This round is different from the stimulus at the beginning of covid. Back then we didn't have time to prepare, had limited information, and had to make drastic measures quickly. Today we've had 9 months to prepare. We have a lot of data on covid, the economy, and society. Therefore stimulus should be very limited for those that really need it and encourage the reopening as safely as it can be done

I haven't studied the insurrection act, but getting Congressional approval seems like a good thing as a check on Federal executive powers. It sounds like something that can be easily abused like it's been done in other corrupt countries. America is all about limited Federal power, checks on branches of government, and freedom within the US.

I haven't studied the insurrection act, but getting Congressional approval seems like a good thing as a check on Federal executive powers. It sounds like something that can be easily abused like it's been done in other corrupt countries. America is all about limited Federal power, checks on branches of government, and freedom within the US.
Please do some reading on the Act and why it was created.
It's not about separation of powers. It's about giving the U.S. presidents the authority to deploy active duty military to maintain or restore peace in times of crisis. The Insurrection Act was invoked numerous times in the 20th century, most famously when Dwight D. Eisenhower sent the 101st Airborne Division to enforce the desegregation of public schools in Little Rock, Arkansas.
Historically, it was designed to prevent a rogue state leader (like a US Senator from that state) from raising a mob or army to interfere in matters involving the federal government. By law, the Feds could not deploy military forces against a state's forces on US soil. The Act gave the President the power to order such a deployment in certain rare and extreme circumstances.
Slavery would have likely persisted long after the 1800s had Lincoln not expanded the Act to make the Civil War legal when he sent Union forces into Southern states. We might even have remained 2 countries - the United States and the Confederate States.
In 1861, Abraham Lincoln expanded the law to form the legal basis for waging the Civil War.
Without it, he wouldn’t have had the authority to send federal troops into a state without the
governor’s permission.
After the Civil War, the Insurrection Act was further amended to give the president authority to
enforce the 14th Amendment and the conditions of Reconstruction in the South. That authority
is now found in Section 253 of Title 10 of the U.S. Code, which gives the president the right to
take military action within a state when “any part or class of its people is deprived of a right, privilege,
immunity, or protection named in the Constitution and secured by law, and the constituted authorities
of that State are unable, fail, or refuse to protect that right, privilege, or immunity, or to give that protection.”
If Trump declares the voting rights of some states's voters were violated because the state ran an unconstitutional election, ....
Since the Act was specifically created to stop states from "acting up," giving state representatives (Congress) effective veto power over Presidential action to stop such "acting up" would be unproductive. Democrat states would band together to stop Trump regardless of the validity of the action.

Ok, so what drew such ire to be “idiot Trump”? I’m no fan of his, but his catching shit for that should be all in Congress. Should be “eff Congress”.
I’m not an insider or expert in the horse trading that goes on, but I’ve seen it and a lot more directly in the last few years. One of the programs I’ve been working on for almost two years now had significant appropriations in there. Should never have been, but understand that advocates have only so many magic bullets. But why is Congress allowed to essentially play games with these programs? Because they play BS games and blames everyone but them.
Why is it before 2016, every odd year there was CRs? And every even years magically Congress figures things out?
IMO, the stuff that you made no mention of is a big deal. At least it is to me. Personally, I think the $600 that Congress came up with is a slap to the face of many. Why don’t they get the ire from more? Because they are good at manipulating things and passing off the ire conveniently on “idiot Trump”.

Just heard on the news that congress is going to get together tomorrow to renegotiate this bill. They are going to give us the $2,000 that Trump suggested. While I heard earlier today that they may have had the votes to overturn Trump’s veto it didn’t sound like they were going to try based on what the news here said tonight.
I wrote this when the previous bill was passed. I don’t like these bills. Not only is the pork spending overwhelming but a lot of people who don’t need and don’t deserve the money are going to get it. People who have not lost their jobs don’t need the money because they are not out a cent. People on welfare have not lost a cent since their income has not changed either. People in my position while it would be nice because I am now on a fixed income, my retirement income has not been effected at all by the lockdowns. I would prefer they only give the money to those who lost their jobs and are having true financial difficulties.
I used our last check to pay off medical bills. I’ll probably use this check to pay down my mortgage or car note. It would be nice to buy myself something that is blued and wood but the sooner I can pay off my mortgage the better.

LOL!! Congress has until Jan 3rd to vote on an override. In that period Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year's Day are all federal holidays. Trump may decide to declare New Year's Eve a federal holiday, too. That's 10 days commencing Christmas Eve -- if I remember what I read correctly, the time to override a veto excludes Sundays.. Take out 2 Sundays and 3 holidays, and that leaves 5 workdays for Congress before they adjourn on Jan 3rd (a Sunday). Mon, Tue, Wed, Thur, and Sat. Congress will have to do all the administrative BS required to call a vote, force a quorum to show up, then get a super-majority to vote to override, and all of it between the biggest holidays of the year!
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, Swamp Critters!! This NDAA bill should have \never been back-burnered ... again. They always create a crisis by delaying the bills, then rush them through so nobody can know what is in it - just like they did the ACA.
Trump stuck the fork in them, and now he's slowly turning it. Congress spent 4 years going after him. I don't begrudge him a single ounce of what he's doing. I think he's going easy on them myself, all things considered.

I can't stand this commercial.....that I helped pay for. :grrr:
its funny because early on in India a lot of Bollywood actors believed that vibrations from clapping and bell ringing would kill the virus. People like Amitabh Bachchan tweeted himself clapping to help "break" the virus. He was quickly denounced for that and all the media quickly flipped the messaging to say that they were "celebrating" emergency workers with bell ringing and clapping.
With that commercial its nothing new. With every public building here in Honolulu there has to be about $300,000 of our tax money spent on arts. I read that somewhere.
Even during this "pandemic", artists and the like need to be somewhere on the front lines. Be it at the front of the lines to get some of that free money.

I almost want to believe he vetoed the NDAA in part to deflect from his holding onto the stimulus/omnibus bill as well as mess up Congress' holidays. If Congress is going to try and override the NDAA next week, they won't be thinking about the horror of a stimulus bill. He'll be able to let that lapse, and if the Congress can't give him what he wants in the NDAA or muster enough votes to override the veto, he'll let that lapse, too. Once Congress adjourns on Jan 3rd, all bills are magically wiped.
I'm thinking if Trump signed the NDAA, Biden would blame him for the bill being a disaster. If he vetoes it, Biden blames him for the bill not getting done on time -- never mind the bill should have been finished by Congress and ready to sign by the President before the election.
So, Trump's telling Congress to fix both bills, or they get nothing -- and they'll like it!

admit you were wrong...
I see no proof of them going back to "re negotiate"
Still not wrong.
https://www.cnn.com/2020/12/23/politics/trump-ndaa-veto/index.html
With full membership in the House currently at 430, supporters of the bill will need 288 votes to override the President's veto. Thirty-seven Democrats voted against the bill when it came to the floor on December 8, though it's unclear at this point whether some might change their votes to try and overcome the veto.
If the veto stands in the House, there will be no vote needed in the Senate. But if it is overridden in the House, senators will return to Washington on Tuesday at noon to begin processing the override vote.
The Senate voted overwhelmingly to approve the massive funding bill with a veto-proof majority of 84 to 13, a major rebuke to the President.

yes, they wouldn't be discussing changes to the stimulus bill if 45 hadn't vetoed the NDAA and they had 100% chance of overriding his veto...

The NDAA has only been a "thing" for going on 60 years (since 1961). Can't imagine how it did not cross your radar at least once in your life of 20+ years, especially for someone who's so "up" on national politics as yourself.

For the record, "fake news" is not a synonym for "false information." Fake news is when a news agency either spins a story to follow a different narrative than the truth (not a lie, but also not the whole truth), or they ignore actual news stories in order to bury the truth while publishing stories that are less damning for the people (Democrats) involved (e.g. suppressing the corroborated Hunter Biden story while publishing uncorroborated anonymous sources saying bad things about Trump).
News that is not real news is "fake", no matter the motivation.

There are no doubt a few here, so the millennial and his very female endless arguing might be apropos. It is apparently baffled of why a female would stay around a male that despised liberals?

If you take the number of hours we are told the new stimulus checks cover (6 months @ 40 hrs/week = 1040 hours), and divide that into $600, we're being given 57-58 cents per hour.
What happened to $15/hr being the minimum people need to earn in order to survive? 50-60 cents/hour is what people in prison make for the work they do.
This tells us exactly what Congress critters making $179,000/year think of the workers in America.

I have to say this my, "button has been pushed"
by recent events.
The video you put up kind of brought to the forefront
of what I've been thinking for years about the "elites"
and the working class.
To switch to history and what a real course of action, not talk,
accomplished.
I'll start this way I condemn the method, but not the intent,
Pol Pot was a Buddhist and he recognized what the "elites"
were doing to his society and he changed that direction.
If you know Buddhism you'd understand Pol Pot thought
he was doing the people he murdered a favor, thus he could
set up his warped view of what a society should be.
America is similar in a way, we have, "Elites" ruling over and
destroying us workers.
The American "elites" need to be eliminated like Pot Pot
eliminated his "elites". Not using the same tactics, but obtaining
the same results.
A more level playing field,
between us and them.
-

Totally agree.
However, a more equal playing field will never be achieved, unless the working class eliminates the ultrawealthy, first, and then the nation's economic system modified to ensure the ultrawealthy and their intellectuals minions never again gain political and media control of the body politic.

Unless I missed it in the discussion, I think it is important to point out that the covid bill is not the same thing as the omnibus bill which contains all the spending which gives money to all these foreign countries. The covid bill doesn't actually give a bunch of money to a bunch of middle east countries.

Since the Congress ATTACHED the Omnibus Spending Bill to the COVID Relief Bill, they became the same bill. Doesn't matter if they used to exist separately. The President can't sign one and veto the other. That's the very definition of "they are the same bill."
Congress has done this for decades: attach a horrible bill to a "must pass" bill to get it signed into law. Nothing but a shell game. If you don't see it, nobody can make you.
Congress made them the same bill and are now using the narrative of "they are different bills" to blame Trump. Only TDS lemmings believe what the MSM and Dems are shoveling.

Honolulu Police Chief Susan Ballard has criticized her officers’ overuse of federally funded overtime during the pandemic, but she’s been allowing her officers to double their salaries with overtime for years, according to city data obtained by Civil Beat.
In just the first nine months of 2020, Sgt. Robert Cavaco earned $71,607 in regular pay and $119,014 in overtime. That’s a total of $190,622 – more than Mayor Kirk Caldwell makes in an entire year.
Cpl. Thayne Costa also earned $71,607 in regular pay in that time period, plus $133,084 in overtime. With a total of $204,691 earned between January and the end of September, he’s on track to make more than Police Chief Susan Ballard this year.
The chief makes $205,800 annually and doesn’t earn overtime.

What's 2AHawaii's consensus on Trump's $2,000 stimulus request? For or against and why?

I’m dumping it into my retirement fund. Since it’s going to be the most expensive $600 I’ve ever gotten I might as well earn some compounding interest on it.

What's 2AHawaii's consensus on Trump's $2,000 stimulus request? For or against and why?
I’m neither for it nor against it. On one hand it’s simply money we have to pay back and we are mortgaging our children’s future. But on the other of the government can approve billions for foreign aid and bullshit government programs then hey I want my share too after all it’s my fucken money. The entire thing is infuriating.
As I get older I’m starting to realize that the Bullshit comes from both sides. We really are being played.
-
What's 2AHawaii's consensus on Trump's $2,000 stimulus request? For or against and why?
$2K is fine, i'm concerned about all the other crap in the bill. Why do X things need "COVID" relief? Those entities should be in the regular budget or something else, not a COVID specific bill. Same like the 1st stimulus that was passed. I guess NASA relies on revenue from tourism in order to operate.
-
What's 2AHawaii's consensus on Trump's $2,000 stimulus request? For or against and why?
You probably already know how I feel about it as I have written a few times already. I think they should take the total allocated amount and divide it up between only those who have lost their jobs due to the lockdowns created by our corrupt and power hungry politicians and community leaders. I don’t think that people who have not been financially effected by the lockdowns should receive this at all. That includes people who have necessary jobs, people on welfare, workfare and any type of government assistance. And I include people such as myself who no longer work and are on a fixed income that has not been effected financially by the lockdowns.
As far as the $600 compared to the $2,000 I think it is a nice gesture. Trump wants to help those who are hurting because of the narcissism and power hungry politicians. I get it. And I appreciate it. But I think there was more to the $2,000 request. First I want to say this is not stimulus and the rest of the spending bill is NOT COVID relief. This is nothing more than a refund given to people who pay their taxes and a gift to those who don’t. True stimulus would be to create jobs and increase production output. That is a true stimulus. Actually what I think is behind the $2,000 request goes beyond trying to help those who are hurting. I think it was an opportunity for Trump to expose congress for the money laundering assholes that they are. He read off all of the billions of dollars that congress was sending to foreign countries for it to be laundered and then sent to the people/entities that the corrupt politicians owe kickback money to. And possibly have it come back to some of them. I think a lot of people did not know where most of the money in the spending bill was going to and what it was for until Trump exposed it all. And I think it made the representatives and senators look like total assholes for giving everyone such a slap in the face of $600. I personally think he accomplished what he wanted to do with this request. JMHO
I will accept the $4,000 graciously and will pay down my mortgage or car loan. Paying off personal debt is not stimulating anyone. But it means I will be able to pay off my mortgage a couple years early.

They may have been attached for the vote but they are still separate bills with separate authors. You are correct in one sense since they pass or dont pass together but in terms of understanding and discussing the bills, they are not the same.
-
What's 2AHawaii's consensus on Trump's $2,000 stimulus request? For or against and why?
I am against, we have enough debt. Its a liberal thing to want to hand out money like candy, not a conservative principle. Though its also beyond hypocrisy that many of the right were calling the checks socialism and communism, yet the second trump supports it, its amazing help for the people.
-
I wonder how many people who are against the stimulus checks are still fortunate to have their current job.
And I don't think anyone who have lost their job and most of their savings these past months would be against the stimulus checks.
It largely depends where you sit on either side of the fence.
I plan to give my stimulus check money to several family members who have lost everything to this fuckin bullshit goddamn fake political virus scam

I think that's what we have unemployment for. Stimulus checks give to everyone. Even the fortunate ones. Its not really fair to everyone and the future generations. I understand its to stimulate the economy but I am not sure if its worth the cost in the end.

There's a hierarchy for calling for assistance. Government should be the last. This is why it's important to support each other and community groups through volunteering and donations. Though I can see Fed gov being used for national emergencies like covid.
1. Family
2. Friends
3. Community groups ( church, non profits, neighbors, etc)
4. Local gov
5. State gov
6. Fed gov
-
Well $4000 will be 2/3 of the $6000 True 3 door commercial refrigerator my wife wants me to buy for our kitchen.

Yeah, government should also be "last" to have the authority to put people out of business and out of work based on some non-existent "national emergency" (while all the government employees remain at 100% paycheck status). This is a completely 100% government created "problem". You see what happens to disabled vets and disabled children when they try to go to a mall or see a movie in violation of an absurd useless government "mandate"... you really believe family and friends can overcome that kind of tyrannical power play? It's a lose/lose situation. Either way what happens is increased dependence on a corrupt system.

That was my point early in this thread. It’s not “idiot Trump”, but the larger issue is Congress and all of the other career politicians who have done nothing for the people they are supposed to be serving. And folks fighting over $600, who’s is essentially less than scraps.
I’m not against air, stimulus, of whatever that helps those that are in need. Just too much money going to those who who don’t really need it or folks working the system to continue to benefit from taxes I pay without lifting a finger.
