I believe so.
I just read in The Epoch Times that Senator Leahy is going to preside over the impeachment trial. Why? They didn’t say exactly, but I know that they wanted Chief Justice Roberts to preside because the constitution SPECIFICALLY says that is who is supposed preside over an impeachment trial of the president. And if he presides over the impeachment trial it would lend credibility to the trial as not being a sham interpretation of the constitution. Which IMHO it is a sham.
I also know that Chief Justice Roberts has been deliberating over his decision to preside or not. Why? Because he is supposed preside over the impeachment trial of the president. But this impeachment trial is not for the president as the constitution plainly states. It is for a citizen that is not supposed to be tried per the constitution. Therefore if he did decide to preside he would not be following the constitutional law as it is written. As Chief Justice of the Supreme Court he made the decision to follow the constitutional law as he is supposed to. He is basically saying this impeachment trial is not following the constitution as it is written. He obviously did the right thing and decided not to preside over an impeachment trial that is not following the words of the constitution as it is written. Which verifies this impeachment trial a sham IMHO.
IMHO it shows this trial has no legs nor credibility. It is a political sham and a game that the Democrats are playing because they are terrified of Trump and us Patriots.

The Supreme Court on Monday moved to dismiss all lawsuits regarding alleged emolument violations, ruling that it is “moot” now that he has left office.
one could conclude that the impeachment is also moot...

They are afraid of Trump and the possibility that he would run again. Or at least use his immense influence to support someone that can continue the MAGA agenda.
People are not ignorant and they see this for what it is. A witch hunt or what OP mentioned. A sham.

This is why Ford pardoned Nixon -- to avoid exactly what the Dems are doing to Trump. It only further divides the nation, and it puts the spotlight on the past vs. where the country is going.
If Biden were half the man he claims, he'd pardon Trump right after the impeachment/non-impeachment falls flat on its face.

Rand Paul forced a vote to table the impeachment trial. The results were 55 Yea and 45 No. Basically saying this is how the vote is going to go to convict. Far enough away from the needed 60 votes it appears that what you said is already happening. Schumer knows he doesn’t have the votes now since every Senator just went on record. Give it up Chucky. It’s over. Trump’s gone but he will haunt you the rest of your political career.

The impeachment is a sham. Anyone who disagrees hates Trump more than they care about the nation and the Constitution.

To me that sounds like they just don't want to have to touch the issue.

Easier to justify declining the case when he is out of office though.
