My last 20 years of working were painful.

I suspect hiring filtering out any but true believers..   From what little I have seen, some professions do have sorts of litmus tests for hiring or inclusion.

A younger brother more or less admitted to me that the law firm he joined made it clear what was expected if he wanted to become a partner.
