Attorney analyzes this shooting. He brings up a good point that prosecution against the 3 armed citizens is highly unlikely, but they could face a civil lawsuit.
Hawaii Stand Your Ground bill, HB534, would block civil lawsuits like this if passed. SB334 would also block civil suits if a person is found not guilty due to self-defense in a criminal trial.

We live in a country where I think too many people are terrified of doing what they think/know is right because of the threat of legal action against them. Sad, but true.
If you know your inclination would be to help someone being beaten, stabbed or threatened with a gun, you should be prepared by getting insurance.
Like all insurance, you hope you never need it, but you're damned glad to have it when you do -- kind of like a firearm.

Vegas has a true castle doctrine. That also extends to your vehicle. Thats why BJ Balwdin was so vocal about his shooting after the police ruled it was self defense.
IDK if they have a stand your ground that makes you immune from civil liability as well.

Your homeowners or renters insurance will cover that. Either defense or indemnity settlement.
Very defensible case for your insurance co. if they broke in.
Shooting, there’s a coverage question of intentional act under these types of insurance so very different from dog bite, coverage wise.

From my past reading, dogs are not "weapons" and would therefore not be covered by self defense insurance policies.
As stated, homeowner's insurance MIGHT cover you. There are some areas and insurance policies that label certain breeds as "extremely dangerous," like German Shepherd, Doberman, Pit Bull, Rottweiler, etc. Those may get you sued if they attack regardless of the situation, because they are "known to be extremely dangerous breeds -- keep them at your own risk."
I've seen that in many states, having a "guard dog" that's not on the "high risk" list and signs warning of "Big Dog," "Guard Dog," "Watch Dog." or any other signs won't protect you from legal action. If someone sees the sign and enters anyway causing the dog to bite them, you are still held liable. If you lock your gates preventing casual entry by others, you might be able to fight it. Otherwise, warnings can only stop people who are smart enough to heed warnings. They won't protect you nor the other person should someone stupidly enter your property and get bitten.
Owning a dog you hope will protect you is discouraged by government. They prefer you only own "alarm" dogs -- little dogs that can't seriously injure anyone but rather starts barking to alert of possible danger. This is more for deterring burglars who prefer homes that won't create noise that can alert neighbors.
That concept of no-bite dogs kind of flies in the face of the Hawaii HPD comments of "get a big dog." They need to elaborate. A big dog is more intimidating and more likely to deter trespassers. But you should only get one which doesn't bite people.
We can't win for losing. Self defense and protection of ones family and property is a crime in this state, it seems.

I don't care what the law is. If I have to inflict grievous bodily harm on someone to protect myself or someone I care about, which includes my dogs, I will.
I’ll worry about the consequences later. Remember the older us seniors get, the less of a deterrent life in prison is. I will be 71 soon. I will be more dangerous
if I make it to 80 and extremely dangerous at 90.

Nearly everyone on this forum realizes the position of HPD Chief Ballard in regards to civilians defending their lives and the lives of their loved ones with deadly force. I am glad that the Vegas police captain is appreciative of the brave actions by the civilians who saved the officers life. I wonder how Ballard would react if an identical situation happened here.

Chief Ballard already showed her contempt for us lowly citizens by asking if anyone thinks it's worth going through the system to defend their life.

to be a financial toll. Is it worth it?"

Vid is released. Guy tries to steal gun from other guys backpack during ccw class. He has prior attempted murder charge, theft of firearm, and more. Pic below is when he got lit up after stabbing the cop.
He is in yellow under the handicap sign. So another car is there to medigate over penetration and misses. I was wondering, let’s say a cop on Oahu or any county in Hawaii pulled a car over a couple houses away from where you live. The driver attacks and starts stabbing the cop. You run out of your house with a gun and neutralize the threat. Will you get arrested and your gun confiscated? Your thoughts.

When I was on the mainland, someone told me if you shot someone engaged in a criminal act in Lubbock TX, the Sheriff would ask you how many rounds did you use so he could replace it. LOL.

Per law, you can aid police. But that section of the law doesn't' apply to leaving the home with a firearm or things like that. Just use of deadly force. So if HI wanted to be a dick, they could get you for no OC permit, places to keep law for gun and ammo.

Personally, on public property, I would not aid the police in anyway what so ever,
here in Hawaii.
Cops would not be on my property as I would never request it, and if they are here they are
trespassing or acting in a manner not in my best interest.
I would not shoot anybody on public property that was hurting a cop.
If there were not cops around I certainly would shoot someone hurting
a civilian in a felony fashion on public property, then drag the body off
to a gulch, and then go home.
I don't normally have a cell phone so I can't call 911.

Thanks for the thoughtful insights. Another thing is bad guys usually have bad guy friends who would try to get even with you. What if something like this actually happens or a couple of guys take 2 or 3 minutes to beat a cop to death. You are an eyewitness and on the news you say you could have stopped it, but Chief Ballard said to think about the financial consequences, is it really worth it? So I decided to just watch and wait for cops to arrive, which they did, 3 minutes after the perps left the scene.
