Got a two part question...looking to get a gun bag.
1. Is it legal to transport a firearm (handgun) in a gun bag, or does it have to be in a hard case. Also is it cool at the koko head range to have your handgun in your gun bag and not in said hard case? I got an older case and the cushion is falling apart, and if I could leave the case at home one less thing to carry.
2. I'm sure some of you had experiences with some. Any good brands I should look for? Looking at one from Midway on sale for $9.99.

As long as you transporting it in a safe and concealed matter it okay. At the range your gun should never leave the designated fire area in public view. I use a soft rifle case all the time. I have transported handguns in a range bag.
Hope your not planning in catching bus to the range with a rifle bag or cases
Just don't whip it out of a school backpack.

if you are buying a new case for your pistol, I cannot recommend enough pelican hard cases. They cost a little more than 9.99, I paid 38 dollars each for my pelican 1170 cases off amazon but they are worth it I think. super rugged, airtight seal and flight approved as well. Both my full size 1911 and ruger MKIII 22/45 fit inside the 1170 case snugly. I also like that they are sealed since its so humid here.

I meant to modify my first post.. but hit quote instead.. anyway.. I wanted to say that I also have 3 mags in each case, one in the pistol and two more sitting seperately in the foam..

Firearms must be in a hard side case, or a commercially made product, including soft cases and gun socks with manufactures tags.
At the range the firearm must be displayed on the bench, open breach, and unloaded. Or, left in the case zipped or latched. I got a talking to when I had a rifle in a soft case unzipped with breach open and unloaded.
I wouldn't skimp on quality of a case. In most ''cases'' you get what you pay for. After all it is protecting one of your most prized possessions. :thumbsup:

Everyone else above me took care of your question. I just wanted to say I'm pretty sure I have the same $9.99 bag you're looking at. I just wish I had a 2nd pistol maybe even a 3rd to put in there :shake:

I try an support all the local vendors when I can, (Keep the kala in Hawaii) but Amazon free shipping rocks when you can't find what you want locally...

I normally buy cases that look discreet and don't advertise that I am transporting a firearm. My pistol case looks like a small soft briefcase and can carry four handguns with several magazines and accessories. My AR-15 is transported in a discreet tac soft case. The case I do have for my 10/22 is a custom rifle case that has the Ruger 10/22 embroidered on it::)

I can look at the case and tell you the manufacturer. I'm at work now. Could Google it and figure out vendors that sells it. Don't recall how much green stamps it cost as I bought out about 4 years ago.

Sorry to hear about the hard case requirement. I was going to suggest thrift shops for all sorts of bags, so I'll just mention that these stores usually have a bunch castoff computer bags and packs for cheap. I use a monstrous shoulder-strapped Compaq or Dell (forget which) computer bag for a range bag. Even has a wide side pocket for carry-home targets I wish to brag about. :rofl: Or cry about. I have others I use to carry the actual guns and ammo in.

Thanks, haven't thought of going to thrift shops. I actually use an old backpack right now but want something that can hold a little more. I'll look out for computer bags. I want one bag I can put my pistol, ammo, and tools in so my hands can be free to carry one or two rifle cases. =)

Holy cow, for casual use, I sometimes make my own cases out of canvas just to keep the dust off of them. Would I have to put a tag on them saying, "Manufactured by Terry, 230RN, Golden CO, USA, Earth?"
Here's one I made for a small auto with a mag pouch in it . The ruler's for scaling, and it's closed with a long shoelace sewn into it:

This innocuous grocery store bag with a hard plastic bottom contains three guns in (yes) hard cases even now as you look at it. >:D
Rifles, if I haven't smuggled them out to the car in the dark of the previous night, I sometimes carry out to the car in curtain rod boxes. Which are plainly and clearly labeled "Sears Curtain Rods" ... or whatever brand they were. In broad daylight, right there in front of G-d and everyone else "to whom it may concern."

Yeah, that bag is not masculine enough for me, so I just take my knitting needle and knit my own bag, because that's just slightly more masculine.

As far as that being a range rule, I have no problem with it.

This is not meant as a slam on Hawaii gun laws, but man, you have it rough there. I hope no relatives of mine were responsible for drafting many of your restrictions. Also not meant in any sort of condescending way, I feel fortunate that I don't have to concern myself with many of the things that you have to do in order to go shooting at the range(es). I remember shooting an M1 Garand on the Eva side of Koko Head before anything else was there. I don't think the houses in Hawaii Kai were there yet or maybe just started. I also remember the pig farms and pond. There was a bar on the corner where we used to see Lucky Luck stop by sometimes (with my Dad). I think it was called Okole Maluna. I could be wrong. I digress.
It seems on my next trip there, in order to stay within the bounds of the law, I should seek help to get some range time. Sorry folks.

I know you're joking, but you need a sewing machine that'll "do" canvas. One thing about sewing with a machine is that it's instantly rewarding. Like painting a wall. Each brush or roller stroke is a partial completion of a task, as it is with completing a seam. (I still call it "running a bead," from my welding days!)
When I was a little kid, we were building a house out on Long Island and would spend weekends there, but there was no power yet. My mother would get bored, so Pop bought her a treadle-powered machine. And Mom sewed away happily after that. I was fascinated with the mechanism, even as a little kid. It had a "flying bobbin," where, as the needle looped the thread underneath, a swinging arm would literally throw this sort of rocket-shaped bobbin through the loop for the lockstich. The flying bobbin was ultimately replaced by today's rotating bobbin.
To this day I'm fascinated with sewing machines. And there's a lot of engineering, topology, planning, and whatnot in sewing. Laugh if you will, but I've never been without one since I became a confirmed bachelor after having used up two wives.

I want to get into sewing. Walmart had a sale a while back, $100 for a stinger. Forget which model number but wanted to try it out. Took sewing back in middle scho and haven't done it since, but been collecting patterns for a while now. Some of the old ones I got I don't even see them around any more. Gosh now I feel like a horder. Is that what preppers are, hoarders?

I am a motorcylist and been using the Cheaper than dirt discreet soft case
No I bought the new Eberlestock Secret weapon thats looks like a hiking bag.
IF EVER for whatever reason I get pulled over by the police and they want to search my bag i'll plead the 4th and do not consent a search. Of course there will be locks.
