Title: What Did You Do in Your Reloading Room Today?
Post by: Inspector on March 28, 2021, 01:05:43 PM
Thought it might be interesting to keep a single thread with our reloading adventures instead of starting a new one every time we want to write something. If it keeps going fine. If it dies, it dies.

I have two areas where I work on my guns, cases and reloading. I keep all of my case prep stuff out in my garage for dust reasons. I also clean my guns and cast lead boolits out in the garage for fume reasons. I do all my resizing, reloading and most of my gun repairs in my reloading room. I have two presses. I have a Lee 4 hole turret press and an RCBS Rockchucker single stage. I reload most of my pistol cartridges on the Lee and all my rifle cartridges on my Rockchucker. I reload for 8 different pistol cartridges and 10 different rifle cartridges. Most cartridges I reload for are common calibers but a few are specialty and obsolete cartridges. I also swage primer pockets and boolits on my Rockchucker. When it is warm outside I can work in the garage or the house. But when it is too cold out I leave all my case prep projects outside until it gets warm.

Today I sat down and cleaned primer pockets on 300 rounds of 9mm and 100 rounds of 7.62x25 Tokarev. I had previously sized and cleaned the cases and trimmed them if necessary. But we got a cold snap for 2-3 weeks so I left them in the garage until it warmed up today. I cleaned some dies that I had not touched for several years and were filthy. I emptied my ultrasonic cleaner of the dirty cleaning solution. That had been sitting since it got cold.

My brother and his family came and visited me a couple of months ago. He brought me a one pound coffee can of my father’s 9mm mystery reloads. My father taught me how to reload but he was not one to keep copious records and be detailed and careful when reloading. The can is full to the brim. And there was a slip of paper that said “125gr” that’s it. No date, no powder, no charge info. I suspect these were reloaded sometime in the mid 1980’s. Knowing my father he used Sierra 125gr 9mm FMJ seconds he bought from the Sierra factory when it was still located in SoCal 25 miles from his house. Also I know all he ever bought were CCI small pistol primers. As far as powder is concerned the weights varied greatly from 5.2gr-6.5gr. I took apart 16 rounds to study them. First, the COL was waaaaay too long. About 0.15” too long according to my Sierra manual. And while it was tough, I could not tell if there was a crimp. Fifteen out of 16 fit my gauge. And a couple of rounds the primer was not inserted all the way in. After taking them apart I noticed the powder was round flakes and medium gray in color but there was about 10% were dark gray to black flakes. Knowing my father he used mostly Herco and Bullseye powders. I have the new formulated Bullseye and it didn’t look like it at all. And I don’t remember what Herco looks like. I used Unique back then and it is possible he may have used some of my Unique. But it didn’t look like it at all. I decided to disassemble all of them, resize the cases with the primer in place, reset the primer farther into the case where applicable and reload them using 3.9gr of Bullseye. I already did this to 100 rounds for a proof of concept and they worked fine for practice ammo. Though they were were not terribly accurate at 10 yards. I started on the first 50 today. Disassembled them, resized them, set the primers back and loaded them up with Bullseye and seated and crimped the bullets. They are running through my dry tumbler right now to shine them up and get rid of the tarnish and dirt. This is going to take quite a while to get through the entire coffee can.

I reload mostly handgun calibers. 357, 44, 45acp, 9mm, and a little 223 and 308.
I like hodgdon and accurate powders. My favorites are 44mag and 357mag. Either moderate cowboy loads up to H110 heavy loads

Currently I'm sorting out all the crap I've collected and trying to use up the older stuff I have to make room to store the newer stuff. Sometimes I find things I forgot I still have.  :shaka:

I think we all have that problem. For some reason I thought I was low on 9mm cases. So I ordered 1k that I found at a decent price. When I went to put it away in my garage I found 1k each 223, 38 and 357 that I didn’t know I had. Oh, and I found another 2k 9mm cases I didn’t remember having. I would not have ordered that 1k cases if I had remembered the 2k I already had.

I forgot to ask how you like the Accurate powders? Never tried any. I used mostly DuPont/Hercules powders until they became Alliant for handgun. I still use them but I use Hodgdon powders more now. And I used IMR powders for rifle calibers mostly and now I use Hodgdon more. I still like the old favs from Alliant and IMR but certain Hodgdon powders just seems to fill my needs better.

I have this weird issue that most of my reloading manuals are old. So they only list IMR, Hercules/Dupont and Accurate powders. Before Hodgdon and others became mainstream. Thank goodness for the Internet.

I ran off a hundred rounds of 9mm_135 polymer coated truncated cone bullets.
4.5 grains of cfe pistol. This bullet is a work in progress. The velocity is perfect but accuracy was just ok.
It should be better.

I won't argue with that.
It's hard to shoot straight when you live in paradise and distracted by palm trees, mai tais and skanky hoes.

You're so lucky to live in Arizona where all you got there is steers and queers.

I got up a little early this morning to start work on a new for me cartridge which is obsolete and hard to find ammo for. I bought an Italian Carcano last year and it has taken all this time to find dies and components to reload for it. You would think the 6.5x52mm cartridge would be easy to find components for but it is not. The brass was pretty easy to find but the dies and bullets were not. Even though they are stated as 6.5mm or .264 they are actually designated as .268 in the reloading manuals. And so I found that only PPU makes bullets that are currently available for this cartridge along with the brass. When I ordered the bullets from Midway, they were very far behind in shipping. So I waited about 3 weeks for them to be shipped. Then after a week going thru USPS they stopped and a hold was placed on the package. After getting Midway involved it turned out the package broke open and the USPS worker saw bullets being shipped and immediately reported it as contents not allowed to be shipped via USPS. The Midway rep cleared it up and I finally got my bullets a month and a half after ordering them. The dies were even tougher to find since they have dried up and pretty much no one makes dies for them any more. Not even Lee. But I found a set after three days of searching through Google I found some small online store that had a brand new set of Hornady dies. Paid through the nose for them but I have them.

I had received the brass several months ago and I lubed, sized and then put them through my ultrasonic cleaner and laid them out to dry. I then placed them in my airtight container with desiccant in it. When I opened it up this morning, there was a lot of moisture in the container. Apparently they were not completely dry when I put them away. So I put them back out to dry in my garage. I will prime them and start reloading them this afternoon. I will use two loads. I will use a full power load of 28.0gr of H4895 for a 139gr bullet for about 2,100 fps. And I will also load a light load using the same bullet over 18-20gr of H4895 for about 1,600fps. I may even load up some using Trail Boss.

Nope. It’s the later carbine model with stock military irons that suck.

Oh ok...I get it.
So far you have blamed the:
1. Iron sights
2. The rifle itself
3. Your old eyeballs

And you haven't even shot the thing yet.

While you're at it, let's blame:
The sun
The wind
The primer
Brass
Bullet
Powder
primer
The water
Ànd the taco you ate for dinner.

Continuing to "prep", which is mostly acquiring components.  Primers was main on the list, but think I am "ok" on that for now.  Meaning that primers are no longer the limiting factor on how many rounds I can load.  This is mostly for 9 mm though.  I'm pretty good for rifle components, and that is thanks to many on 2a.

I finally finished my 100 6.5 Carcano rounds that’s I have never loaded before. They came out quite nice looking actually.

Now back to 223/5.56 loading...

more cleaning / sorting through components.  found more large pistol primers.  so i plan to do some 45 acp with Montana Gold JHP bc i got a case of 1900 i need to use. or some Keith style 44mag boolits when those arrive, USPS running late as usual
i have some old H110 powder and some old LPP i got on a couple of trades i should test out

Berger .308 boolits should be arriving tomorrow.  Some 115 gr 9 came in the other week as well, so I can start prepping brass for those.

i like the Accurate powders.  i've been using #9 for a while. it burns clean, i notice my gun isn't that dirty after shooting.  its accurate.  and can be loaded to nearly comparable velocity of H110.  it has a lower flash than H110. i use #9 for 44mag and 357mag.
I just started to use #7.  i notice it often overcharges in my Hornady auto charge dispenser.  it is a fine powder, so that may not work so well in the Hornady auto charge dispenser.  but the #9 works well with the Hornady unit
i have to load more with #7 and #5 to really get a feel for them

got these Keith style 44 projectiles in the mail yesterday from Stateline Bullets.  240 grain SWC.  they shipped out fast from Stateline, but USPS took longer than advertised, which seems the norm nowadays.  got here in less than 2 weeks with 3 day priority mail
first time i'll be loading these bullets.  looks like the regular LSWC, but the head part looks a little larger on the Keith style.  price was really good from Stateline.  i 'll probably order again when they get in stock.  right now they are sold out on just about everything
nothing says 44 magnum quite like Elmer Keith

I took apart another 100 of my father’s old 9mm reloads and dumped the powder (I think it is Herco) and reloaded them with Bullseye. I have examined most of the cases and I think a lot of them are new Winchester brass. They sure are super shiny on the inside. Even once fired cases are not this shiny. They are in the dry tumbler getting cleaned up.

I finished up my 100 rounds of 6.5 Carcano in my dry tumbler.

I loaded 100 rounds of 7.62x25 Tokarev. They will go in the dry tumbler next.

Took apart another 100 rounds of my father’s 9mm reloads. I keep checking primer depth and I keep finding some primers not set to the proper depth. I set all primers to the proper depth and then reloaded them.

My nephew is coming up this weekend so I can try out his new Stribog 9mm pistol. He wants to try as many different types of 9mm ammo in it so I told him I have 4 different types for him to try. Including these redone reloads.

with certain powders in my Hornady auto charge powder dispenser, it overcharges more than i would like it to
MK machining makes an insert that makes it not overcharge so much, its $14 for 3 of them of different sizes
but i did some online researching and found that someone used a expanding nut from Home Depot.   its Everbilt expansion nut, #8-32 x 15/32 inches.  good thing is on Home depot site it gave me the aisle number and bin number so was easy to find.  didn't have to ask one of the workers that don't know shit either, so saved time by not consulting with them
we'll see how good it works
and was only 77 cents at home depot

I have the MK Machining "over"sert.  It works very good for facilitating accurate powder trickle.  I have the occasional over, but pretty rare.  The over-sert nature of the one have does make you be more careful in getting the pan off the scale though.

My set came with three inserts, which I assume is to account for variations in models.  Let me know if you want to try the other two inserts.  I've heard the McDonald's straw hack is just as good, but I was ordering something else from MKM, so added the insert.

Cool.  I was going the manual/spoon method until I sprung for the Chargemaster.  It's much faster.  Only humbug part is when I change powders between batches.  Forgetting to close the drain spigot thingy was one lesson learned pretty quickly.   :(

prepped some Starline 44mag brass for the 245 grain Keith bullets.  got them cleaned and primed, ready for the powder when I get a chance. also using these primers I got on a trade. box looks old, but primers look good
side by side comparison of Hunter's Supply SWC on the left, and Stateline Keith bullet on the right.  the Keith head of the bullet is bigger. less of the projectile will be in the brass if you compare the crimp groove on each one.
plan is to load a good warm load using AA#7. since it's a Keith bullet, I didn't want to go Trailboss, a little hotter would be nice, but I'll save the H110 for JHP bullets.

I finally decided to replace the old dirty crushed walnut shells in my vibratory tumbler. One day I tried using the Lyman media renew fluid and it put a crust of gunk so hard on the inside of my tumbler I couldn’t scratch it off with my fingernail. I threw out the old shells and I soaked the bowl in hot water, dish soap and a little bleach. After an hour of soaking it was soft enough to remove with a scrub sponge. Then I realized I didn’t have enough walnut shells to fill the bowl back up. I went out to 4 LGS and Sportsman Warehouse and no one had any. So I stopped by Harbor Freight and they were out. On my way home I stopped at Petco and they had bags of it.

I reloaded 100 rounds of 300 Blackout plinking ammo using 110gr Nosler Varmageddon over H110 with a Small Rifle Magnum Primer. I was lucky enough to pick up the heads in bulk at 12 cents a piece. I should have bought more. I dumped them into the vibratory tumbler. I need to process more brass so I can load some more rounds.

It’s time to get back to casting some new boolits for my 38, 357 and 45.

Well, for the past couple of weeks I've been reloading 38 and 45--about a .50 cal can of each.  Ordered more bullets about 10 days ago but they haven't shown up yet.

Yesterday I saw 124 gr. JHP bullets (not heads or boolits) for sale at one of my suppliers, by the time lunch rolled around they were sold out.

I have noticed that pistol powder has been selling out quickly--no 231, BE, HP 38, tight group, etc., is available, just some Unique and trailboss.  I have enough unique to last a few years, about enough to match my primer supply, lol.

I have enough Unique to last me a year I think. About 2 years worth of Titegroup. And about 6 months worth of Red Dot, Green Dot and Bullseye. And probably 2-3 years worth of H110. And yet I still feel I don’t have enough pistol powder. And I will buy more if I see some available for sale. I have choke rifle powder.

I need more bullets (9mm mostly). I am using up what I have left and I’m casting my own (38/357 & 45). In a pinch I can cast 9mm as well. I just prefer to use jacketed bullets in 9mm. After I get better at casting and powder coating my pistol boolits I will start casting rifle boolits.

I made these last week in hopes of finding a cheap alternative that shoots straight out of my glock.
There is a common warning about excessive crimp on these bullets, but I think that is incorrect.

Go have fun. My nephew came up from Chandler yesterday and we went to the range and shot his new Stribog Grand Power SP9A3. He had a suppressor on it as well. I liked the balance of it without the suppressor but it was very quiet with it. It is also a delayed roller blowback design. It was amazingly light recoiling. Felt no more than a 10/22. We shot some reloads of mine which were in the 950-1000 fps range so subsonic and he brought some 115gr aluminum cased supersonic rounds. Very interesting the difference in sound with the suppressor on between the two different cartridges. I also brought my S&W Model 547 which of course is quite old school. But was shot extensively by my nephew.

This was the first time I had been to the range since late January.

reloaded some 245 grain SWC Elmer Keith style bullets from Stateline Bullets
the OAL just made it inside the cylinder of my 629.  Ruger Redhawk and Super Blackhawk have slightly longer cylinder, but I plan to test it out of the 629 since Elmer Keith favored the S&W 29 I think
I made a heavy crimp so it shouldn't have any bullet jump, hopefully
test it out soon

a few weeks ago at SEC I saw they are now selling Accurate powders.  I guess since Hodgdon bought them.  but they had a good amount of ACC#5, 7, and 9 a few weeks ago.  might be gone by now

Setup annealer and got it running.  Need to practice and get process down.  It seemed pretty easy, but also want to see the results with annealing in the reloading process.  Have some practice brass and will do some trials prior to implementing with the "real" brass in my reloading process.  I also have a few upgrades that I have on order to get the positioning of the torch nozzle easier to setup and maintain the position.

inventory of my reloading materials showed I'm running low on LSWC 357.  I have plenty of JHP and plated bullets but not much LSWC
good thing I got the email from midway that they just got some in stock today, so I ordered 2 boxes of 500 LSWC 158 grain
I really like loading with LSWC in 357 and 44.  a good all purpose round.  or RNFP is good too.  those just go well with revolvers, IMO    :shaka:

with certain powders in my Hornady auto charge powder dispenser, it overcharges more than i would like it to
MK machining makes an insert that makes it not overcharge so much, its $14 for 3 of them of different sizes
but i did some online researching and found that someone used a expanding nut from Home Depot.   its Everbilt expansion nut, #8-32 x 15/32 inches.  good thing is on Home depot site it gave me the aisle number and bin number so was easy to find.  didn't have to ask one of the workers that don't know shit either, so saved time by not consulting with them
we'll see how good it works
and was only 77 cents at home depot

update
I still get the overcharge with the ACC#7, so i tried the expanding nut and it worked great.  but it goes so slow, i dont like slow
i can run the Hornady auto charge on the slow mode and it works fine, no overcharge and its not as slow as running it with the expanding nut.  expanding nut basically slows down the trickle so it doesn't over charge.  but so does running it on slow mode
i just thought i could run it on regular or fast mode with the expanding nut and it would work faster than running it on slow mode, but didn't work out that way
now I'll just run it on slow mode
oh well. live and learn.  I'm only out 77 cents, so not so bad

45 acp 230 grains, 44 magnum 245 grains, 9mm 115 grains
45 and 9mm are factory ammo (brass looks dirty) , 44 is reloaded ammo (clean  :D )

the 357 reloads with H110 were good.  the powder was old, just look at the pic, thats an old bottle.  so at least its still good.
i could go slightly hotter with the XTP bullets, and more hotter with the FTX bullets
even with 44 caliber seems the xtp is more accurate than the ftx, or could be i need to work up the load more

I have load data and have collected:
- Lee 7.7 Japanese 3-die set
- New 7.7 brass (Priv)
- .311 caliber 180gr RN and 174gr spitzer bullets/heads/tips/projectiles (whatever folks wanna call them)
- CCI LRPs
- Powders include IMR3031, IMR and H4895, IMR4064, Varget, BL-c2, H4350

Still need a case trimmer...

I will when I have time. Right now I'm working two jobs besides helping a family member get thru a struggle. I'm reloading in the evening when I get home one or two steps at a time. That's why it's taking so long. I don't reload if I'm worn out or exhausted. Hence my little tribal group! But I'll let you know when I do get time.

I'd rather shoot Trailboss loads out of this 4 5/8" barrel SBH, or just not H110

AMERC 45acp brass
I read about reloaders on the mainland tossing out AMERC headstamp brass.
My coworker found some at the range here and picked them up.
They appear to be perfectly normal but when you reload them, they don't chamber.
Top photo is WCC brass which was reloaded about 3 times.
Bottom photo is an AMERC once-fired shell.
The load was a 230 gr. polymer coated round nose.
(https://i.postimg.cc/L4ZVKDm6/AMERCBRASS.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/9zC9yG4v)
It seems like the web portion is bloated and an ordinary (dillon) sizer die can't squeeze it down.
Perhaps a LEE FCD would bring it back down but I have not tried it yet.
The gauge pictured here is a MIDWAY chamber gauge.
I suspect for most guns, it will work ok. Normal pistol barrels aren't cut so tight.

Most 99s have oversized chambers so neck sizing and annealing are recommended to extend brass life.  I have an RCBS trim/form die so I can make 7.7 brass from 30.06.  If you shoot reduced loads the brass will last even longer.  Search for 'The Load' by Ed Harris - good reading if you're into reloading for milsurps.

Been handloading for a while but getting my act together to start loading 7.7 Japanese for my Arisaka type 99.  Anyone have experience or do's/dont's I need to know about before I start?  YouTube has a lot of knuckleheads on it but I trust you guys and your advice always.

Great recommendation on the Ed Harris "The Load" info/article.  May try some of the reduced loads to preserve brass life.

You prob mentioned previously, but I either forget or didn't see.  But is your 686 a plus (6 or 7 round)? 6" barrel?

I have a 686+ 6" barrel and it's been great.  I love shooting that gun.  Makes even .357 Mag seem pretty mild.  Not that that is a high power or snappy round, but the heavier 6" barrel makes things super mellow (good for teaching context).

I pick it up tomorrow
its the regular 6 rounds, 6" barrel.  i already have a fiber optic front sight and a hogue bantam grip for it
I already have a 586, but not a 686.  that's how i talked myself into buying the 686.   :D

Awesome!  My 686+ is my first revolver.  It's one of my favorite revolvers to shoot.

Actually I did this a few days ago and tested them for QC yesterday.
(https://i.postimg.cc/vZLWtybM/PHOTO-20210627-001626.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
It is a Blue (obviously) 135 gr Truncated cone design, with CFE
Previous tests showed good results, so I made some more and tried them in different pistols.
The goal here was to create a practice load that simulates the feel of Federal 135 gr. HS ammo.
Federal 135 HS is advertised as 1060 fps

From my G17 this ammo clocked 1062 with an SD of 8. (this is really good)
Accuracy was pretty good at 25 yards. It printed 5 shots inside of 3 inches, which is typical for a Glock17.
Cost will depend if you can get primers or powder at reasonable prices.

"Pre-stupid" cost for this batch was $14 per 100 rounds.
If you want to duplicate this, I can give you the technical specs.

Initial test on those RMR bullets was dismal. ...Relatively poor accuracy.
I suspect that I seated too short.

Made up another test batch and replunked. Surprisingly, they all plunked at 1.12" which is the same length as speer Gdots.
It helps if your gauge is clean. They also plunked in the glock and BHP, both with match bbls.

Installed a new battery in the chrono this week so I'm planning to be testing on Saturday.
I might run some with unique just for fun.

I fired up the lead pot and cast some 158 swc bullets from my new lee 6 cavity mold.
I have not casted any bullets since 2005-2006. It took longer to find all of my casting
gear than to cast roughly 500 bullets. I may cast some bullets for my 44 and 45 pistols
when I find the molds.

Ditto. The Lee 6 cavity molds work great. I have one for my .365 9x18 Makarov.
I rarely shoot this pistol but the bullets from this mold cut nice clean holes in
paper and shoot better than the jacketed stuff.

Btw last sunday I tested my blue balls for accuracy and they shot a phenomenal cluster at 25 yds.

ran into a small kine problem de-priming some 44mag brass with Lee die
i guess the primer was stuck in the brass and hard time to push it out, so the decapping pin would get pushed out the backside of the die.  its a safety measure in the Lee die that prevents the decapping pin from getting damaged it just gets pushed out before it gets bent or broken
never had this happen before.  only had 4 rounds that this happened out of 50 rounds that i was reloading
i stopped after the first 2 primers got stuck and pushed out the depriming pin.  did some research about what to do next.  only thing i found, short of ordering a new die, was to superglue the decapping pin inside the screw inside the die
so i did that with gorilla glue, let it dry for 6 hours, tried it on those rounds, and same thing, stuck. but it did get the primers to move slightly but not completely removed
so i tightened down the pin screw again, this time it worked
i now have replacement decapping pins so if it happens again I'll try replace the pin.  if that fails, i'll just order a new decapping die
could be my universal RCBS hand primer, bc it doesn't use any specific brass holder, its a spring loaded brass holder so it clamps to any caliber brass and sometimes it's not perfectly centered.  that might be the culprit, i'll have to take a closer look next time. but i've used this hand primer several hundreds of times and never had a problem
could be Menehunes too.  who knows? ;)

I keep a 3/4" open end and ½" box wrench next to my press to adjust the collet on Lee dies.  If you have the collet really tight and the pin still rides up you can try roughing up the end of the pin with a file so that the collet will get a better bite on the pin.

Check the diameter?
I could size and lube at my house.
100 boolits would take less than 10 minutes.
Then spend the rest of the time smoking fine cigars and drinking beer.

Fyi, sometimes they are more accurate unsized as long as the diameter is pretty close.

Check the diameter?
I could size and lube at my house.
100 boolits would take less than 10 minutes.
Then spend the rest of the time smoking fine cigars and drinking beer.

Fyi, sometimes they are more accurate unsized as long as the diameter is pretty close.

Those wadcutters are .358"
I'm going to reload a few and see how they fit in the cylinder before I do the rest. If not too tight I think I'll be ok not resizing them. If I need to resize, probably too much hassle. I just give um to you  :shaka:

I have a lot of workbench space out in my garage so I set up all of my case preparation to be done outside. And all of my loading activities inside. With it getting colder now I need to rush to prep 1,000 more 9mm cases before it gets too cold to work outside for any length of time. That should give me enough cases to load inside during the coldest part of the year so I can continue with my EDC and holster practice. I try to load as much as I can during the winter and spring and then case prep during the summer and fall months. I have a whole lot of 9mm, 38SPL and 357Mag to load plus some 380ACP and various rifle cartridges.

Yesterday I prepped a bunch of 9mm cases and loaded 100 rounds of 9mm. Also did some general maintenance on my dies and presses. And general housekeeping around my garage. I recently bought a little air compressor and while it is totally inadequate for running tools it works well for blowing out dies and inflating tires.

Earlier this week I walked into one of the LGS here and they had 3lbs of CFE Pistol and 1lb of Titegroup. They let me buy them all so I think I now have enough powder along with what I already had to last me for quite a while.

My Ruger Super Redhawk sold on consignment so I am looking for my next EDC pistol since my Glock 17 and Sig P228 have turned out to be way too big and heavy for EDC.

by the book, load seems rather low.  but I'm going by the book.  we'll see how it shoots

up next will be the 44 DEWC.  I haven't found any load data for that particular projectile, so we'll have to start low and work it up from there

I swaged about 200 cast and powder coated boolits to load this morning for 38 Special.

I got all the components together to reload 3-400 rounds of 38 Special today. As I was setting up the first 200 cases I noticed numerous 357 cases were mixed in with my 38 cases. Looks like when I was prepping 357 cases sometime during the summer I dumped them in with my 38 Special cases by accident. So I got to spend the next half hour or so sorting out brass. I decided to only load 200 rounds today due to this.

I went through all my ammo boxes and realized I don’t have enough for my 38 Special and 357 magnum so I’ll go down to the store later today and get some. I want to expand the amount of 38 Special and 357 ammo I keep in inventory.

I organized the ammo boxes I do have and labeled them and did the data input into my app.

I wanted to load my last 100 rounds of 38 Special today. I ended up with only 94 cases so I went out to my garage where I had 20 cases that needed to be prepped. So I prepped them in order to have an even 100 to load. I finished that up and cleaned my gun from shooting this morning. I prepped a bunch of 357 Magnum cases. I organized my closet with all my ammo boxes.

I still have ~300 cases of 9mm to prep and 50 cases of 7.62x38R to prep and load.
Title: Re: What Did You Do in Your Reloading Room Today?

I had a lot going on today so I didn’t get as much done as I wanted to.

I retrieved 200 rounds of 357 Magnum cases from my tumbler with walnut shells and blew out the primer holes with compressed air. I organized and labeled my boxes and entered them into my inventory app. I placed all the cases in my loading blocks and hand primed all of them with regular SPP as they are all going to be bunny fart loads. I set up my press and powder measure for the Trail Boss powder. And I retrieved 500 heads (DG 158gr SWC Powder Coated)  from my inventory for loading tomorrow. I took inventory of all of the different heads I have for 357 magnum and I realized I am getting low so I need to order more or make more. Right now prices are relatively low on lead heads still so I think I’ll order them and save my casting lead for more lean times.

I continued prepping brass from my last few outings. It has been cold out here so I limit the amount of time I spend in my garage. It looks like I will need to bring some of the brass prep inside now. Anyway, I prepped all my 7.62x38R brass. And last time I was at the range these nice people gave me all of their 38SPL and 357Mag brass so I finished prepping those. I also have about 500 rounds of 9mm I am in the middle of prepping.

I loaded another 100 rounds of 357 Magnum.

I just started using the 38/357 LSWC PC boolits I bought from DG Bullets. I am not too happy with the powder coating on this batch. And I was happy with the last batch of boolits I bought from Summit City. BTW, Summit City has a 5% off for returning customers and 15% off for X-Mas Sale right now.So far their CS has been very good and their bullets have been good as well. Here is the URL:

Depends but yesterday was Unique. I have been using Trail Boss for the bunny farts and H110 with magnum primers for the heavy loads. But the heavy loads I have been using FMJ bullets. The LSWC Powder Coated boolits shoot very nicely under Unique and the recoil is moderate.

got most parts in now assembly. Problem I am having is the plumbing leaks from the 1/8" copper tubing to the rest of the tubes. I'm trying to find a suitable adaptor / solution to fit a 5/8 tube to a the 1/8" copper tube coil. I know resistance increases from larger diameter to smaller. Going to try soldering a bigger tube to the smaller tube or try a barbed connector / reducre with small hose clamps. Any ideas?

I have noticed the same. I gave up on buying my batteries at Costco for that reason.
BTW, I have changed my attitude towards the battery leakage issue. So I can go back to buying my batteries at Costco if I want to. But now I am near a Harbor Freight and they sell similar batteries very cheap. And they put them on sale even cheaper on a regular basis.

What I did last year is on New Years Day I went through my house and made a complete list of all things that use a battery. I noted the size and quantity of batteries in each device. I also removed the batteries out of the devices I knew I was not planning on using in the near future. So I preempted the leakage issue. I also decided which items I was going to replace the batteries in every New Years Day. So last year I bought a bunch of batteries and replaced them in every smoke detector, carbon monoxide detector, remote controls, clocks, backup batteries for plug in clocks, gun safe, red dot sights, etc. I also bought new backup batteries for my lanterns in case SHTF and in my weather radio. I will replace these backups every 2 years. And I also have extras for those items that need new batteries before the year is up. So initially it cost a pretty penny upfront to do this, but I had quite a few extras left over from my initial purchase a year ago that I didn’t have to replenish many batteries this year.

The big thing for me is that I had leakage in my gun safe and it took a lot effort to save the battery box. So now I don’t have to worry about it if I keep up my routine. Also, I had to throw away some good tools that the batteries leaked in an ruined. And I no longer have to deal with a smoke alarm that is designed to only go off at 2am when the batteries die.

Since it is cold outside I have moved a lot of my case prep indoors. I made a list of all the calibers and quantities I want to increase my stores of this year. My goal is to add about 4,500 rounds this winter.

Yesterday I finished prepping 300 rounds of 9mm cases. I have 200 left to tumble. I will start reloading these later this week. Also I started washing 400 rounds of 380ACP out of my goal of 700 to add. I bought a bunch of really dirty range brass so I am decapping them and washing them before I run them through my sizing die. I started to run out of ultrasonic cleaner so I went to some of my LGS and they are all out. So I ordered some online. I also did some reorganizing of my ammo supply. I also did a lot of labeling.

I was busy yesterday but today I finished prepping the first 100 rounds of 380ACP cases and cleaned and sized the next 300 and deprimed and washed one more batch of 100.

I also finished prepping the last 100 of 9mm cases. And I loaded 100 rounds of 9mm using 124gr X-Treme CPRN with Titegroup and SPP.

I primed and loaded 200 rounds of 9mm today. I have 1,300 rounds left of 9mm to load.

I also took delivery of a case of Federal Small Pistol Primers.

deprimed and cleaned some 357 brass. will reload more WC to shoot in the 627 PC 2.625" barrel
I think the same load I did last time will work fine, but gotta shoot it first and see.  load is right at the max recommended for this projectile and titegroup. no need to go any more than that.  as long as its accurate, I'll leave it there bc it's kind of a soft load even at the max charge. if not i'll back off a bit and see if its better

About to prep some 556 LC brass also got in some SMK 77 grain .224 heads, maybe will try to clone the MK262 round.  Anyone tried this before? I know Johnny's Reloading Bench channel on youtube did a bunch of videos on it.

difficult to get the velocities with commercial powders. I clocked them going 2900 fps. I tried ARCOMP, RL15 and Varget up to 2700 ~ 2750. It gets pretty hot after that - primers going flat

That is true even Johnny had a difficult time getting the same velocities, but I think the powder used in the factory loads are blended.  I have the sierra reloading manual and will reloading around to that.  Currently I have only Varget on hand for powers.  What would be a middle load for Varget?

I ran out of Varget awhile back and never restocked. I don't recall what I used.  Idid start here: https://whiteoakprecision.com/info/reloading/ (https://whiteoakprecision.com/info/reloading/) I use RL15 and ARCOMP with AR COMP being able to push the 77s faster at a lower charge weight than RL15. Did you try this tool: https://grtools.de/doku.php (https://grtools.de/doku.php) Usual disclaimer: start low and work up. You are responsible for your own load development. Watch for pressure signs. 77s in 223 usually shoot well around 2700 fps. I've shot them at 600 yards and was happy with what I got. Compared to 80s they did require about a 2 MOA elevation adjustment up.

What heads are you using ?

Nosler custom competition factory seconds from SPS. Got them awhile back before covid. They used to carry them by box of 1000. Now, when they go on sale and in stock, is per bag of 100. Though, these are pretty accurate and very stable. Shot targets up to 700 consistent with these. Not bad at all. I also used Sierra TMK out these distance. And the factory seconds shoots just as good for the price. https://www.shootersproshop.com/22-caliber-77gr-hpbt-custom-competition-100ct-blem.html

start learning about social security and medicare early on. Before 64 or 65.

Did you shoot those 260 rem?

I shot some 6.5 CM on Saturday.  It was quite breezy at times.  Still in barrel speed up, so mostly just getting data, but all good practice.

Hopefully I'll get into the groove of loading and shooting between my .308 and 6.5 CM.  Then mix in loading for 9 mm soon.  If my request for brass ever gets attention (from the person I've been texting). . . (kidding, kidding)

===========
I started testing these bullets.
They are pretty good.
With my compact SW 9mm SD pistol it groups about 3 inches at 25 yds.
(https://i.postimg.cc/25H10DK6/20220716-194239.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/947XfvV5)
These are actually made for 38/357 pistols but it works ok in a 9mm.
It's a 147 gr truncated cone design.
The long bearing surface and large diameter contributes to accuracy.
The downside is that it bulges the tapered 9mm case so it may not feed in tight chambered pistols.
I would never use these for home defense or to do a hit on somebody.LOL

getting ready to load some practice ammo, trying to duplicate the HST and GD ammo in 9mm
in front of the HST is RMR jhp, in front of the GD is Everglades jhp round nose
I reloaded some of the Everglades projectiles already and tested them and went well.  next time I think i'll up the powder charge to the limit of the recommended load for titegroup.  and get started loading the RMR projectiles next
on their website they say they tested these jhp and they expand to about .6 inches

I loaded 45acp practice ammo for the first time in years. Between the pandemic and range closures, I just didn't need to make any more. But I picked up  pile of bullets from RANDAY and now I got enough supplies to practice for years. It took a while to dust off and reverify dimensions. I used vectan ba10 powder for a medium semiwadcutter load. It's a fast powder like bullseye.

Tomorrow is Veteran's Day.
I ran off a few hundred practice loads and use old newspapers to clean them up before boxing them up. One of the pieces of newspaper was Midweek from 2 years ago. It had an obituary written by Ron Nagasawa. It was for veteran news man Bob Jones.

For those of you who are too young to know Bob, he was a Vietnam War correspondent. Then he worked as an anchor and reporter for kgmb TV. In later years, he wrote a weekly column for Midweek from his banyan tree house in Kahala.
Bob passed away almost exactly 2 years ago. He was an actual friend... Not the Facebook kind.

Diameter???
From past experience, success with lead bullets in 9mm is contingent on getting the bullet to grab the rifling. So the diameter of the bullet has to be big enough to match the bore of the gun. Unfortunately, 9mm bore diameter can vary greatly.  Especially in vintage guns. I've seen lead 9mm fly sideways due to that. 🤣🤣group sizes about the size of my refrigerator.

Unfortunately, 9mm bore diameter can vary greatly.  Especially in vintage guns. I've seen lead 9mm fly sideways due to that. 🤣🤣group sizes about the size of my refrigerator.

diameter is .356

seems like a lot of people go with .358 for lead bullets

I've ordered 9mm in 357 dia just to test.
358 might bulge the tapered 9 case too much.
356 usually works for most modern guns but the speed has to be fairly low.
Slow burning powder is the way to go for lead 9mm.
AA7 sounds ok but I used Unique.

good luck
I'm going on Saturday to photograph a shooting match which I hope is still on.
Then I'll pop over to the pistol side for my usual embarrassing practice session.

Curious to know...
btw, does your G19 have cut rifling or that funky smooth rifling?
also how much AA7 you put inside?

For this Saturday, I'm going to shoot my old 45 as usual but I just switched to BE powder because I'm trying to use up a few pounds of this old stuff.
It's at least 20 years old. Maybe 30 yrs. I know it's still ok because I made a small batch to test last week.

What did I do?
Well here’s a list
Threw away a perfectly good RCBS Summit press and Inline Fabrication Quick detach mount and mounting plate for the Summit press. Why? Had no more use for it and it was just taking up real estate.

Broke out my Lee C frame and quick detach mount and will start using them for odds and ends work not suited for my Lee turret press

Threw out 15 or 20 Hornady lock and load bushings, 9mm, 30-06, 30-30, 25 WSSM, 25-06, 45-70 and 50-120 dies sets and shell holders

There was more minor stuff I no longer used or wanted.

Time to move on…..

What a waste of good money.
I easily sold some unused stuff and donated the money to HIFICO to carry on the 2A fight. Somebody wanted to buy my old Lee press a few weeks ago. People always want dies. I took a table at the gun show to sell unwanted stuff to raise money for HIFICO. I was just about to put out a call for stuff to put on the table. You could have donated it to a new shooter to learn to reload. If you don't promote the shooting sports to the next generation then we really lost the battle.

This is the practice ammo I made.
It is a soft swaged lead swc hp. It is powered by a light charge of  bullseye because the metal is so soft I can easily dent it with my fingernail.
Also, if you drive it too fast, it will foul your bbl and the low recoil is better for arthritic fingers.

Furthermore, it hangs up on the throat because the metal is too soft. Seating depth appears long, but it's not.
Basically, it's crappy ammo.
The only reason I shoot it is because I got the bullets cheap.

going to practice 45 tomorrow so I made some 45 lswc ammo using some pretty old bullseye powder.
Just low power stuff. 200 gr. at about 750 fps.
I need the practice. Muscles and eyesight are getting old. :(

Made some lightweight 45acp ammo. 160 gr. Lswc. With old bullseye powder. Speed was lower than expected. Accuracy was ok.
These are not great for action pistol competition. Even my hot load didn't make major pf while burning quite a bit of powder.
I'll just use these for marksmanship practice.
Photograph is in the "going to the range" thread.

45 ACP-I had some bad experience reloading brass with the "A USA" headstamp.
So I loaded 50 rounds using that brass to see if I can figure out if there is a chronic problem.
The first thing I noticed was that quality control seems spotty.
The headstamps are NOT consistent. The lettering seems to vary.
Will shoot these on Friday, if possible.

For those #68 style bullets, I load them to 1.250 OAL.
But I also make sure there is not more than about 1/32 inch of exposed shoulder.
The term #68 refers to the Hensley and Gibbs mould design.
Other mould makers make similar bullets but not exactly the same.
I'm guessing that Stan is using saeco moulds. I should ask him.

I taper crimp to 0.468 for maximum reliability.

What's the diameter of the case mouth after crimp?
That can cause failure to chamber completely.
Also, some new guns have very tight chambers.
Also, bullets that use a polymer coating might be too tight in the chamber.
Nowadays I insist on verifying my reloads in the particular gun that will shoot them.

===========
The reasoning behind the hotter charge weight for your 357 is the nature of H110 powder.
H110 is a slow and difficult to ignite powder.
Also, in the 357 shell casing, a lower charge weight might not get close to the flash hole.

FYI-the lowest H110 load I ever used was 14.5 with a hard cast keith-style lead bullet.
This was a great combo because the keith SWC is a fairly long bullet that fills the airspace.
That 14.5 charge provides a satisfying thump with a cheap bullet.
A hard cast poly coat bullet or perhaps a cheap plated bullet might be a fun thing to try with H110 powder.
I've used cheap plated bullets in my 44 mag. It's good low-cost fun ammo.

Hornady handbook of cartridge reloading:
158 grain XTP with H110 starting charge is 12.7, top end is 15.6.  Half way in between is 14.15. My load is 14.1
. My other book says 15 grains to 16.7
We'll see how my loads go and take it from there  :shaka:

Dry tumbling approximately 1500 45 acp brass. That should keep me happy for a couple of months.

loaded some of Stan's 158 grain 357 LSWC projectiles over 8.5 and 9.0 grains of ACC#5. book says 1170 fps and 1220 fps but we will check it on the chrono this weekend and I'll shoot from Lee's pistol rest to test some accuracy. shoot out of my 6" GP100 bc it is my most accurate 357 revolver

Dry tumbled about 1500 or so 45 brass and loaded a few hundred missouri idp1 bullets with a medium charge of 4.2 be. A screw came loose on the Dillon and pis...d me off. It took a out a half hour to figure out what was jamming up the mechanism.  I had to sit outside with a beer and a cigar after that. Then some neighbor up the street started singing karaoke...some days ya just can't win.

Ran off 150 rnds of medium 45 practice ammo for tomorrow.
I notice the brass I'm using nowadays seems to be cracking more often.
I think the quality of metal isn't as good as it was 40 something years ago.

Testing NAS3 cases mainly for competition use where brass pick up isnt possible or ideal due to time constraints

Out of my DD 16 inch
Sierra 77gr Cannelure, 2770 FPS Avg. Still under the 5.56 max pressure according to QL.

Compared to the Brass case on the left going 2700 running ~2000psi hotter according to QL

Going to try Nosler 70gr RDF soon.

nothing weird today

Just loaded some 45 practice ammo for a friday session.
A part flew off my dillon press. I couldn't find it, but I did have a spare.
Will contact dillon for a replacement. This happened before.
The press is about 40 yrs old so it's starting to fall apart....just like people.

I loaded about 150 rnds of 45acp practice ammo.
However, I used powder that was about 70 years old.
Ref. My post from September 2 a few months ago.
I test fired some at that time and test fired a round today.
I want to chrono this batch later this week.

that's a healthy velocity out of a 16" barrel. What powder did you use?
