Title: Winchester 1911 - The Widow Maker
Post by: Inspector on March 31, 2021, 02:38:16 PM
I have been extremely busy the last 3 days with taking my wife to various doctor appointments and PT and OT sessions. I have not had time to pick up one of my old firearms that needed some work done by my gunsmith. So she and I were free this afternoon and it is a very pleasant and scenic 30 minute drive to my gunsmith. I called him and told him I’m coming. When I got there he was visibly upset/distraught/shaken. I asked him what was wrong and he showed me this shotgun his customer brought him. It is the Winchester Model 1911 SL. It has the nickname of The Widow Maker. Read the article from the link I included here as to why it is called that. He was function firing it and cocked it the way you see it being done in the article and it fired out of battery. Scared the shit out of him. It happened right before I arrived.

Fortunately he was familiar with this model and made sure it was pointed in a bit of a safer direction than shown in the article. But having it go off unexpectedly and out of battery definitely shook him up. If you have one of these shotguns please be extra careful with it.

You don't need an AR-15.  It's harder to aim.  It's harder to use.  And in fact, you don't need 30 rounds to protect yourself.  Buy a shotgun!  Buy a shotgun!

Same here. I had not heard of this shotgun before until my gunsmith showed it to me yesterday. It’s why I looked it up and shared it with everyone here. It was just really interesting.

Something I forgot to add to this thread from the discussion with my gunsmith. He is actually going to buy a shot shell reloader or take the shot shells he has apart and just use a primed hull for testing since the gun is capable of firing out of battery. He doesn’t want the same thing to happen to him again.

I am very lucky to have found this guy. He is VERY reasonable in his prices IMHO. And he has a complete garage on his property that is his machine shop workspace. It is a 4 or 5 car garage with other rooms. The garage is the size of a moderate home. He has the room and the equipment to build whatever he wants from scratch. He found a very creative way of repairing my WWII relic pistol that didn’t cost me much and didn’t retract from the look as an alternative fix would have been to remove some of the old bluing and you just can’t match the color when you try to reblue a portion of a firearm. When I was there I noticed a Remi 700 that had been rebarreled. I don’t remember the details but he either built his own barrel from scratch or bought a blank and did the rifling and exterior milling and contouring himself. This guy is very talented and creative. The only downside to using him is that he is at least a 30 minute drive from my house and his house it out in the boonies in farmland. One time traffic was heavy and it took me 40 minutes to get out to his place.
