Title: Improvise and adapt
Post by: oldfart on October 16, 2021, 07:06:47 PM
You going to love this story...
I attended a pistol match today.
It is a semi-formal fun match.
After I fired my first stage of 10 shots, the front sight on my pistol disappeared.
It's probably sitting in the red dirt at Kokohead somewhere.

I discovered it missing when I started stage 2.
So I fired 20 rounds with no front sight.

After stage 2, I thought about it a little and improvised.

Time to get a red dot.  Much easier to find when they fall off!

True that.
Coincidentally, as we were packing up I found a pair of glasses in the dirt.
It was very easy to see.LOL
This was on the action pistol side at KHSC.
BTW. I did not finish in last place.

Maybe the sights realigned themselves to where all the shots were landing?

This is what it's supposed to look like. (pic is not my gun)
Mine still has the tape on it because my kids are dropping by for Sunday dinner and I wanted to show them what crazy old Dad did.
It's a somewhat rare Browning HP

Apparently this front sight is a part of the casting, not a staked or dovetailed.
Not quite sure how to fix this.

Contact the manufacturer.  Sometimes you get lucky and they stand behind their product.

Might get a new part, or ask you to send it in for repairs.

Worth asking.  Worst thing that might happen is they tell you. "Nope."   :shaka:

It's the pake thing to do!

Haha
Everybody's a clown tonight.

My old shooting buddy and mentor offered me the service of his gunsmith in California.
I think he used to work for Bain and Davis.

The counterweight/sight is not hard to find. I got one coming in a few days.
My buddy is grabbing another one for me real cheap, I hope.

Sounds like at least you shot minute of duct tape and didn’t come in last.

(One more clown comment)

Other than a combat sight like my revolvers I’ve never seen a fixed front sight.
Certainly wouldn’t think it could fall off.
It’s the recoil from your high pressure loads.  >:D

Not clown comment:
Hope you get it resolved.
Let us know.

JB Weld? (Almost as good as duct tape)

If its any kine of steel.. Tig or mig weld . if the welder is good he can make a decent- sized blob and that can be your new front sight lol.

Then grind/file til you find your perfect poa/poi preference. Lol. Then you can use any sort of paint and make it whatever color you want.

Apparently the front sight is supposed to break off.  That's why they attached it to a small part you can quickly replace!

Repeat customers.

I've shot a pistol match with a loose front sight before.  I'm guessing it came loose about 1/2 way through, or at least that's when I noticed some errant shots, or higher rate of. . .
