Ok I know we now have to take a class to get a certificate so we can purchase handguns. My question is if I previously purchased a handgun back in the 80's, do I still have to go through that class to get certified or am I some how "grandfathered" in so that I do not have to go through that process? Anyone know?

If you haven't taken the class before, you gotta take it to buy one today.

If you want to purchase a handgun within the state of Hawaii, you have to meet the training criteria. Taking a class from an NRA instructor is one avenue. Taking the state-run hunter's safety class is another. And, if you are military, getting a letter from your commanding officer is yet another. But you must have one of these things to buy a handgun from someone within our state lines.
Now, if you travel to another state where you can legally buy a firearm, then return home with it, that's a different story.
But there's no grandfathering because you bought a gun before the law went into effect.
