And yet most hunters and hungry residents have no access to the deer or the meat.

Open up hunting. We can take care of the issue :D

Unfortunately, nearly all of the deer are on Private land on Maui, so there is no access to them. The Department of Housing and Human Concerns (DHHC) has issued $1 million in grants to kill off deer, including nearly $200,000 to Larry Ellison to kill deer on Lanai.

So, instead of calling them "axis deer," they are more like "no access deer?"

It's been opened up for a long time now. You gotta call around, network, hook up with the locals, and you can get free hunts 7 days a week. Call DLNR on Maui and Molokai they can put you in contact with farmers and private owners who are begging you to take the deer off their properties. If you got family and friends on Molokai who are in the Molokai hunting club, endless amount of hunting "axis" access. Go to the gun range and look for the guys wearing Mauibuilt shirts or Molokai tattoos, introduce yourself, make new friends. Guarantee they can hook you up. Don't wait for the government to open it up. Make it happen. Good luck

A bunch of us have been pushing for private landowner liability protections so more hunting lands are opened up, but there's little support from hunters and hunting clubs.

Zippz what hunting clubs have you guys contacted? Also, how would hunters get info etc to help support this? In the past l have also tried that approach literally single handedly but was always told liability insurance was the way to go.
Looking forward to hearing from you. You can pm me as well if that's easier

I also have been getting the same answer: no access due to potential liability for the landowners. So can we unite and speak with a bigger voice? Can we push DLNR to lease lands, provide insurance and open it to hunters, like on Lanai, (maybe for an annual Fee if necessary) or do we individually purchase liability insurance to cover landowners that allow us to hunt? The existing hunt clubs like it the way it is, after all, they have all the access they want. Yet they are very closed to additional members. Some landowners get taxpayer funds for emergency relief, so they have no incentive to change.
How can we move the needle?
