Title: Rock River LAR-47
Post by: Cougar8045 on October 11, 2012, 11:55:12 AM
So the new Guns & Ammo has a review of an interesting idea: an AR-15 that takes AK mags and is chambered for 7.62x39.  Seems like a pretty sweet idea to me, although I see two problems: there is currently no piston-driven variant available, and the handguard is not free-floated.  Strange, if you ask me, since reliability of the AK is its main selling point, and the accuracy of the AR sells them.  Using DI and a non-free floated barrel seems like keeping the worst of both worlds, at least to me.  At any rate, it looks pretty slick; I wonder if the barrel nut is standard AR.  At least that would allow a guy to put on an aftermarket free float handguard, although considering that the rifle starts at $1200, one would think you wouldn't have to immediately turn around and drop a couple hundred more on a handguard...  Anyway, I found another review on the internets, so read it and tell me what you think!

My homeboy shoots a 7.62 chambered ar not sure if it's piston driven.  But the gun is a beast with a nice kick.  Plus its cheaper to shoot than 5.56 dex and the guys over at xring tuned it

Nice!  How does it run?  One of the things the Guns & Ammo article talked a lot about is the problems with trying to run the 7.62 cases through an AR's straight magwell.  Apparently magazine feeding issues have plagued a lot of other ARs chambered in 7.62x39 because they like a more rounded AK-style magazine.

DI is what makes the AR simple and accurate. Less parts and it works.

Never really liked AKs and not a big fan of ARs because of 5.56, but for some reason this unholy union has me intrigued.  A little pricey for my budget at the moment.  I would like to see more reviews on accuracy and dependability as more folks try this out.

I seen that same article.... I have a rock river ar and love it debating on this one but I would have to see it in person first... Wish it was gas piston too

The only piston driven AR chambered in 7.62x39 that I found so far is the PWS MK114.  I have a PWS in 5.56 and my wife and I love it.  The only thing is that PWS tends to be really pricey.  I think the upper alone is $1200 on their website.
