Title: Gun violence in the news
Post by: 2aHawaii on September 03, 2009, 07:37:28 AM
Here is a pair of stories of inappropriate gun usage in the news.  The story about the armed robbery is an excellent argument for the right to have concealed carry.  No one can predict if you are going to be robbed but it can make a robber think twice if he thinks you might have a gun.  I have also heard that armed robbery is becoming more of a problem in Hawaii recently.

A woman who was found dead late Sunday night in a vacant building in Wai'anae had what appeared to be a shotgun wound to the chest, police said.

Police identified the woman as Nicole Barrett, 26, of Wai'anae.

Barrett was discovered by a friend about 10:15 p.m. Sunday, police said.

The case has been classified as an unattended death pending the outcome of an autopsy. The city medical examiner's office yesterday did not release the cause or manner of Barrett's death.

Authorities have not ruled out the possibility of suicide.

A 20-year-old man told police he was robbed at gunpoint late Monday night while walking along a sidewalk in Wahiawa.

The man said he was walking alone about 11:30 p.m. when a car stopped nearby. A man who was a passenger in the car got out and approached the pedestrian.

He said the man pulled out a gun, demanded his personal property, got back into the waiting car and fled after he complied, police said.

The man said the robber appeared to be in his 20s.

Police classified the incident as a first-degree robbery and were looking for suspects.

Quote 1:  Suicide?  This report is remarkable for its lack of detail --even considering any column-inch restrictions.  Was the gun found there?  And my understanding is that women don't usually use guns for suicide, preferring things like poison and car exhaust.  Of course it's possible that someone came across the scene and walked off with the gun before the friend discovered the body.

Quote 2:  Situational awareness here.  The moment the car slowed, the victim should have been looking for an escape route.

And taken it.

Quick-march.

Preferably in a direction opposite to where the car was headed.

With his hand on his butt.

Gun butt, that is.

Oh, wait a minute.

Maybe he didn't have a butt.

Gun butt, that is.
