- Will Smith smacks the shit out Chris Rock on stage and YELLS F-bombs from his seat at THE OSCARS for making a joke about his wife. Not even a terrible joke.
And then won the best actor award and will see no repercussions.
As Chris Rock would say. That’s some crazy shit.
Worst part is Will was laughing at the joke then looks like his wife sicced her dog on Rock.

I heard about this on the radio this morning. That uncensored video does tell more of the story though. Reactions that I heard was that many in attendance wasn't sure if it was staged or was playing, but obvious from the video it wasn't playing.
One common feedback I heard was that it's never ok to respond with violence. That said, I do think folks who pop off like that need to be aware of consequences. Personally, I think what Will Smith did was "aight". Chris Rock was reported to not press charges.

my takeaway is that Will Smith has a weak right hand. if Chris Rock is standing there with his hands behind his back and sticking his chin out and Will Smith has a clear target unguarded, then Chris Rock should hit the floor. Chris Rock is a buck and a quarter soaking wet. but the slap didn't even phase him. that's WEAK!!!

Don’t need the victim to press charges with that many witnesses and on TV in front of millions.
The victim doesn’t press charges, the State or County does unless you need the victim’s testimony.
Hence the Hawaii v. Defendant in the case title for criminal charges.
Dead people, comatose people. They don’t file a report. It’s based on the evidence and in this case there’s plenty.
No need for Rock to be a complainant.

Used to be, an accepted defense for battery could be made if the actions were provoked through the use of "fighting words."
Provoking someone into using violence should be at the very least a "half measure" of guilt in an assault.
Courts have decided that whoever threw the first punch is at fault. It gives a pass to extremely offensive personal insults. Expressing an opinion is not the same as insulting someone to get laughs.
Smith is a big boy. He's been a comedian and said some pretty sarcastic and offensive things. He should know better than to get angry. If he felt so offended and protective of his wife, he should have approached Rock in private where the confrontation would not be witnessed and recorded.
When asked later about the slight against his wife, Smith could just say he and Rock worked it out in private. The press loves Hollywood drama, because that's what the fans want to see. Smith could have come out looking good if he'd acted like an adult. instead, he's now the highlight of the Oscars, and not in a positive light.
The only thing that's helping him now is the super-low number of people who still bother to watch these award shows. :thumbsup:

In the context of two multimillionaires having a slap fight on an awards show that nobody watches I could care less
But right now the government is trying to make free speech a crime, the past year has couple years were one giant psyop, and I could see this being used as a justification for more violence against people with undesirable political views.
Hollywood is the public relations wing of the military industrial complex and everyone at that event is a professional actor at the top of their game.
The fact that Will Smith was not escorted out of the building speaks volumes.

"Jokes at my expense are part of the job, but a joke about Jada's medical condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally. I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong. I am embarrassed and my actions are not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness."
Apparently there is a place for violence in a world of snowflakes and movie stars and Portland liberals.
He reacted emotionally after he laughed his ass at that joke.
Shoulda caught Rock outside if it was gonna go down. And the ass threw a false crack. No shame.
Still shoulda been arrested on the spot. Woulda been hilarious.

I am leaning that way too. staged slap. no security as he steps on the stage, during the slap, and after. and Chris Rock really sold the slap by moving his whole body with the slap, thereby taking some of the force out of it. and then he goes right into the stance of his hands behind his back again, and just shrugs it off.
and in the video towards the end when Will Smith is almost off camera, looks like he starts to smile a little bit. and the after party Will is partying up with everyone else as if nothing happened

An insult to another mans wife more than a joke.
If your wife had cancer and losing her hair, would a bald joke directed at her still be funny ?
Would saying there's a beached whale on the sand when your wife has a pituitary gland problem and is sunbathing be funny ?
Personally, I think it would have been better to go on stage, gesture CR to the wings and slap his ass there just to be "considerate".

The "buzz" is, Chris didn't know she was suffering from the disease alopecia. He must have assumed her "hair style" was a conscious choice, like Sinéad O'Connor. Maybe he should bounce his material off a few people who are more connected with what's going on with specific celebrities before airing it on live TV? Sounds like a profitable business model: Joke Vetting -- ensuring no A-listers will be overly offended by your jokes. I really like Will Smith as an actor. He is skilled and well spoken when I have heard him talk about other subjects.
I lost a bit of respect for him on this, especially considering what his wife did to him with their son's friend. She deserves much worse than a GI Jane joke.

On April 1, Will Smith announced he'd formally resigned from the Academy. This prompted the Academy board to move up the meeting to discuss the altercation 10 days earlier than originally planned.
After expediting a meeting by ten days to discuss the disciplinary actions Will Smith will face after slapping Chris Rock on the Oscars stage, The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has reached a decision.
The Academy's Board of Governors met Friday and after the vote, the Academy President and CEO said, "The Board [of Governors] has decided, for a period of 10 years, from April 8, 2022, Mr. Smith shall not be permitted to attend any Academy events or programs, in person or virtually, including but not limited to the Academy Awards."
It says he can't attend the events or programs, but will he be barred from any nominations for awards? Not that they really matter to anyone but the actors. Actors patting other actors and motion picture contributors on their backs.
The only reason he wasn't arrested is Chris Rock declined to press charges.

I wouldn't consider what Rock said as a dis, but instead a comic doing what comics do. Make fun of famous people. Rock didn't know she had a condition. I didn't even know that. I've even heard him use that condition in a movie like 20 years ago, but I didn' t know what it was until this happened. I wanna say it was Down to Earth.
