Title: Cross Dominant SUCKS!
Post by: Rico808 on May 20, 2022, 02:39:49 PM
Right handed shooter, Left eye dominant.

Pistol irons I’m fine

Rifle on the other hand…🤦🏾‍♂️

We blue taped the left side of my glasses and it was better.

Looking to get a flip up eye patch to attach to my glasses. Does color/opacity of he patch really matter?

Or any techniques anyone has to help with this?

If your rifle has a magnified scope, you're going to close one eye anyway.  So, in that case, cross-dominance isn't an issue at all.

The #1 benefit (IMO) of keeping both eyes open is for focusing on 2 things at once -- the front sight with one eye and the target with the other.  There's also a tactical advantage of keeping both eyes open: to have the widest degree of peripheral vision so you're able to see other threats if present.

You can close the non-aiming eye initially to get the sights lined up with the aiming eye, then open the other one.  This forces the non-dominant eye to already be focused on the front sight before the dominant eye becomes involved.  Since the rifle is on the right side of your face, your eyes really don't have a choice of what to focus on anyway, so training them to do what you want isn't as hard as with pistols, where you can align the pistol for either eye to be in the sightline.

There's so much info on the Internet addressing this issue.  Shouldn't be hard to find recommendations that work for you.

How bad is your right eye that it won't focus on the sights/reticle?

Im left eye and learned to use the right. Rifle it made it easier because i was forced to use the right eye only. This helped training the right eye for pistol irons.

Or train your eyes to switch dominance, like movie Fire Birds.  If only just to drive around with a red panty on your head, yelling "I am the greatest"!  ;D

Sometimes it also depends on your optometrist if you wear glasses or contacts. As you get older, your eyes lose the ability to adjust focus.

Optometrists may adjust one eye for seeing distance and another eye for reading to compensate for this loss of focusing ability. #focus

Usually it's easier to go with the dominant hand and retrain the eyes, unless you have a eye injury or really bad eyesight in that eye.  Takes a lot of practice to be proficient with it, maybe a year or two?  Do a lot of dryfire practice.
