I was in Security Equipment the other day and got to handle a S&W M&P 9c. I have shot the full size 9 and it is a great shooter! More than accurate, very flat shooting, excellent recovery time between shots, and reliable, well if you can call it that after only shooting 300rnds, but my buddy tells me no malfunctions after a few thousand since hes owned it. My only complaint would be the trigger reset. It is long and not defined, definitely favors being slapped and not squeezed. The 9c or subcompact felt very comfortable in hand. Seemed to be slightly larger than a Glock 26. The grip on either seemed more accommodating than the Glocks I own in any format, full-size compact, and sub-compact. If I was not so invested in the Glock platform (i.e. mags, holsters, sights, parts, etc) I'd be hard pressed not to switch over. From what I hear, this is an observation which is common amongst a lot of Glock shooters.

I've heard that the M&P's and XD's are both very good alternatives to glocks.
I believe that S&W also updated their Sigma line with a new name (Self Defense), tritium night sights, and the M&P trigger.
