I also know guys who state BJJ is the best self defense martial art. IMO, there's a time and place for any martial art. So cross training is important and knowing when to use or not to use the skill.
Example:
If you go to the ground for a hold or submission using BJJ and there's more than 1 attacker, you gonna get knocked out by their friends. So staying standing is the best. And same could be said for boxing, almost useless when on the ground. But good if there's more than 1 attacker.
Then add in having some what some fitness level to accomplish which ever skill is to be used.
And of course, the best is to just walk away. Who cares if you look less manly.

Video restricted. . .
Best? The style from The Last Dragon. Master the art of fighting, without knowing how to fight. . . ;D
Don't think any one best. Best for folks to have multiple tools in their tool bag.

Kav Maga is derived from a combination of techniques used in aikido, judo, karate, boxing, and wrestling. It is known for its focus on real-world situations and its extreme efficiency.
Why limit yourself to only one technique?
if I had to choose one, that would be my pick.

BJJ seems like it's the most effective, however it requires a lot of training and practice to do. Im slower at learning things and looking to put in minimal time, so BJJ isn't for me.
Boxing and Krav looks like a lower time investment to get a minimal level of proficiency.

What's good about KM is that they also reevaluate every 5 years or so to see if any changes need to be made to adapt to today's time.

Think all martial arts, or any endeavor should continually re-evaluate. Used to do krav/combatives previously, and it was a constant evolution of what is being taught. At least where my friends and I were going. Gotten in to BJJ recently and enjoying that. The evolution and "new wave" BJJ vs old(er) school is a popular topic. Where I currently train mixes in self-defense specific training in many classes, vice mostly rolling/sparring. It's been many years (almost 30) since I was involved with BJJ and judo, so all is quite new to me.
There's good for each art/style and dependent on context. Look at MMA, matchups of contrasting styles is always interesting.

I also heard BJJ studios have started adapting some of their classes in this direction, and it's good to hear you verify it. Jocko podcast swears by it. Hawaii has very strong connections to the art.
Also heard that KM was designed to get unexperienced IDF soldiers up to some minimum level of proficiency as quickly as possible. Big cities seem to have reputable trainers but not sure about here.
With shooting and surfing it's my experience that there's no substitute for regular practice.

While I used to go to a KM based combatives class locally (a few years ago), I currently wouldn’t recommend. For various reasons too long to get into here. It was good training, and included a lot of knife and gun disarms. That said, I heard a lot of KM classes are equivalent of that goober in social media in the red gi. Understand that’s in jest, but heard some  worthy stories.

Problem with that is you're giving the opponent grounds to say you threw the first punch which might justify the ass kicking (mutual combat). It's cool in the movies when the good guy says, "My dad always told me, if you can't avoid an ass whooping, at least get in the first punch," as he clocks the leader. I don't think telegraphing your punch verbally is smart, though. Hollywood.
I prefer to be ready to block a punch without being the first aggressor. I keep one hand near the waist and the other below or in front of my chin as nonchalantly as i can. Had a guy try to kick me in the nuts once. Since I was already standing at an angle to him to keep my balance, I was able to twist my hips and protect my groin. At the same time, I reached down with the left hand (the hand I positioned near my waist) and grabbed his foot. I let him hop around on one leg for a few seconds before putting him on his ass -- just to fully enjoy his surprised expression.
I turned and casually walked away. I think he was too shocked (and maybe in too much pain?) to worry about chasing me. I do know he never tried anything with me again.
Nowadays, that would be on the Internet forever. He's lucky this was the pre-smartphone era.
BTW, that guy is a pastor now.

Mostly all knife disarms taught will get you killed or badly hurt. Even Paul Vunak said to run if you are unarmed. If you cannot run, I give my condolences to the family. This is reality.
You should always carry some kind of weapon. . I am too old to do any kind of effective empty hand defense or offense. I always have on me at a minimum, a Mace pepper gun, a X26 Taser with 25 ft cartridge, a razor sharp fixed blade and a coin purse sap.

nunchuck-fu
Depending on where you live, useful items such as those are potentially illegal to carry in public. If you do use them, and you've taken classes in martial arts, some places require you register them and yourself as dangerous weapons.
A lady who worked with my mom defended herself with those. One of the two guys following her in an almost empty parking lot ran away thinking she was pulling a gun from her carseat. The other one stayed to see what she had and laughed after seeing what she was holding. She told him to stay away, but he didn't heed her warning.
As soon as he closed the distance, she knocked him out cold. She then got in her car, drove to the nearest police station, and lead a patrol car back to the parking lot -- where the attacker was still unconscious.
The defense lawyer (in a NC court) tried to go after the intended victim by claiming she used a dangerous weapon that was required to be registered. She produced a New York registration for the weapon which was acceptable in NC.
After seeing that the nunchucks were legal, the judge looked over at the defendant and said, "You're lucky she didn't kill you!"
