Title: the correct way to transport firearms?
Post by: xxRENDOGxx on December 01, 2012, 01:07:41 AM
howzit guys i once heard from somebody that the weapon and the ammo need to be in separate compartments while transporting in a vehicle. for example: weapon locked in trunk, ammo in car or something like that.
i've never been to any safety classes, so i don't know the correct way to transport my firearms (i only have long guns).

my other question is how do i transport my firearms and ammo (to and from the range) if i have a truck?

It doesn't have to be seperate...you can transport both in the trunk.  The firearm just has to be unloaded and in a "container" (case, gun sock, etc).

ETA: Ammo must also be in an enclosed container (box, ammo can, etc).

If you have a truck you can transport in the cab.  Just have it in the least accessible spot, such as behind the seat, or in the passenger's side near the door.  Guys do it all the time.  Still needs to be cased.

I always thought the correct way was in a holster =/

In Hawaii, there are no laws about placement in a vehicle, or even requiring a vehicle. The only laws require that the gun be unloaded and cased, and that ammo be cased.

This.  I've never seen anything about placement or any of that.  As long as the guns and ammunition are in some sort of case that completely encloses them, you're good to go.  My pistols and ammo are all in the same range bag, right next to each other.  As long as they're entirely covered and no ammunition is in the gun, you're fine.

My old method of transporting handguns:

Loaded magazines in the same case as the gun, just not in the gun, and the case sitting next to me in the passenger seat.

My new method of transporting handguns:

Same, but in a backpack while riding a moped.

I thought transporting a loaded magazine(s) is a no-no. Even if you don't have the firearm with you.

just to clarify.   i just bought a .22 rifle.  so there is no law stating that i cannot put the gun in a gun bag, strap it to my back and ride my motorcycle to the silhouette range?  since the gun is cased and unloaded, i am fine?

i have put my pistol and ammo in my saddle bags or my backpack before, but it is going to be pretty obvious i got a rifle strapped to my back.  thanks

Incorrect. Nothing about it in HRS. Just make sure your loaded mag is cased.

Did that for years. I owned a mc but not a car. I used a small golf bag, could easily fit two longarms in it. It had a tendency to drag on left hand turns, though.

This. The only problem is that my range bag becomes SUPER heavy with three handguns and their respective ammunition..... :-\

The motorcycle long gun thing is pretty pimp.  You know what would be super-duper pimp, on a cruiser?  A rifle SCABBARD!  Oh, man, I might have to look into that.

All you need is a commercially-made gun sock...tie socked rifle to your back and you're good!
