Title: Load Recipes for 40 cal.
Post by: Coconut-kid on December 03, 2012, 08:58:54 AM
I'm about to reload some 40 with Montana gold 115 jhp and wanted to know if anyone has some light load info for just plinking.
I'll be using bullseye and from what I've read it's not the most ideal but like I said looking for light loads. I've done my research so have a good idea. Just wanted to see what all if you guys were doing.

I'm gonna start with 4grns and an OAL of 1.125 or so. And adjust from there. I just want it to be enough to cycle properly but not to soft.

Thanks.

I think you mean 155 gr. JHP, not 115 gr.?? Or perhaps 165 gr. JHP??
Personally, I think burning Montana Golds for light plinking loads is wasteful, but that's just me.
I would give you some load data, but unfortunately I never came up with a really good load for the 40sw. Lots of other people do load and shoot 40sw so I wish you luck on your venture.

I meant to say 180gr. For some reason I put for 9mm. (It's Monday)
Thanks.

I use lead for 9, .40 and .45 so I'm not sure if this will be any help.  Also, I use N320, never have tried BE as it does smoke a bit with cast lead bullets. Perhaps you may find it useful if you ever decide to switch components/powder.  I used to use MG 147s for 9mm, but its gotten too expensive.  I'd rather deal with the added clean up caused by lead than spend more money.
180 grn. LFP, 3.6grn. VV N320, 1.130 (or so ) OAL.  144 PF
180 grn. LFP, 4.3grn. VV N320, 1.130 OAL.  169 PF
200 grn. LRN, 3.2grn. VVN320, 1.135 OAL.  151 PF
200 grn. LRN, 3.8grn. VVN320, 1.135 OAL.  169 PF

The above loads work well in my M&P, don't know how they'll function in your gun.  All were chronoed out of my M&P 5".  Even the major PF loads had a lot less snap than factory 155grn. ammo.  The last load listed had a single digit SD.  Always be careful when reloading, but even more so when using the heavier .40 S&W bullets combined with relatively fast powders.
The minor PF loads are really soft, especially the 200 grn. load.  Almost seemed softer than my 147 9mm load.

Heres my recipe: 180 grain FMJ, 5.5g of red dot, and a OAL of 1.125. I shoot these out of my Sig P229 and my Glock 22c with no cycling problems at all. And i think BE and Red Dot is very similar in burn rate.

Would you like to buy some lead heads in 9mm and .40 around 1000 rounds each. LMK
