Post by: changemyoil66 on November 01, 2023, 08:12:12 AM
Any Marines who can chime in if other annual balls were cancelled previously?

I'm not a Marine ... I'm just wearing his hat!
(punchline from a joke)

A couple of events were cancelled in 2020 due to concerns over COVID-19.
Quote
The top enlisted Marine had warned in July that celebrations of the service's 245th
birthday in November would probably be limited due to the novel coronavirus pandemic.

Now the top Marine officer has canceled the 2020 Commandant's Birthday Ball as
a necessary step to “protect our people.”

In 2021, the Marines sent out a message to their commands with guidance on restricted travel to scheduled balls.
Quote
3.b.  Requests for GOHs to attend a ball in which a GO, SES member, or SgtMaj is already
in attendance or a local GO, SES member, or SgtsMaj is available to attend as the GOH will
not receive a favorable endorsement.
3.c.  GOH travel eligibility will be determined using CDC’s community transmission levels of
COVID-19 based on new cases per 100,000 persons in the past 7 days and limited to areas
of low or moderate transmission rates.  Requests to travel to areas with substantial or high
transmission rates will not be considered nor endorsed.  In order to determine destination
community transmission rates, use the CDC website provided below and search by county.

I guess what I was getting at is are they preparing for war?  So was the one during or prior to OIF, Desert Storm/Shield, etc... cancelled as well.

"Operational commitments."

You're a smart man.  They aren't going to divulge more than that.

Hoping a Marine will violate OPSEC on here would be shortsighted.

I was surfing in Sharkaako last night and watched several large military transport aircraft land in succession at Hickam
They held up regular air traffic for a bit so that it took a while for everyone else to catch up.

There was a drill going on on Oahu. IDK where, but APache's were landing in open fields and gunfire (blanks) can be heard.  Some people complained about it and asked what's going on.  MeanHawaii IG had video of it.

I had large planes and many helicopters "buzzing" my house in Mililani the last 2 weeks.

It's the kind of noise normally associated with a large military exercise at Schofield.

Was the army invited to the Marine Ball?   :geekdanc:

That wasn't a ball cancellation Corps wide.  That was one specifically for USMC CentCom.  Ball are organized at a unit level--hell sometimes they aren't even celebrated on November 10th.

I don't think anyone said it was Corps Wide.

What's being talked about is the ambiguous reason that was given:  Operational commitments.
