https://www.khon2.com/top-stories/state-firework-drop-off-doesnt-spark-much-interest/
On Sunday, the state Department of Law Enforcement hosted a firework amnesty event where people could drop off unwanted fireworks to four different fire stations across Oahu; Mililani Mauka, Waipahu, Kapolei and Kakaako.
The Dept. of Law Enforcement held a similar event back in October. The gun buyback event brought long lines of cars waiting to drop off their unwanted firearms in exchange for gift cards. That event brought in over 500 firearms ranging in all types of guns including semi-automatic rifles and ghost guns.
On Sunday, each fire station accepting unwanted fireworks was empty with no lines.
“People can possess firearms legally, but most fireworks, most of the illegal ones, are violation of the law so it’s been a little slower than we anticipated,” explained Department of Law Enforcement Director Jordan Lowe. “Although we have recovered about 400 pounds so far this morning.”

We need a tax buyback where the government returns all the money they stole from us without paying a penalty

Last night, someone near my house must have decided to get rid of their illegal aerials ... by lighting them.
The report of that bomb (no other way to describe it) rocked the entire area, setting off dozens of car alarms and scaring my pets to death.
Those types will never stop buying fireworks, and they absolutely won't voluntarily turn them in.
i highly doubt HPD has any plans of doing a sting to catch illegal buyers. Again, too many of their friends and family would be caught.
I imagine the only people turning them in didn't pay for them, are scared to have them in their house, and/or know the fireworks are too old or damaged to be used.
The person setting off that bunker buster last night isn't concerned with anything other than having fun -- something someone on here seems to think takes precedence over the law, the health of others, the treatment of other people's pets, ...

Kind of interesting, I disagree with most all Hawaii Fireworks and gun laws.
I'll probably do 4th of July in WA state getting my illegal fireworks from the reservation
and shoot my un-registered guns( all my guns are in WA state).
I suspect gun buy backs came from widows, were old useless guns, or guns they could not sell because of Hawaii laws,
You'd have to admit you had an unregistered gun. I think that is a class B misdemeanor, per gun?
Anecdotally, there are lots of unregistered guns on the BI. I'm sure the other islands aren't much different.
As far as Fireworks, I don't do them here in Hawaii as I don't want to be rounding up cows at 10 P.M.
I don't have pet animals in WA state.
Although there are deer and black bears in the yard daily.
Enjoy your fireworks and illegal guns in 2024. I'd be the last to turn you in.

So, what's your viewpoint when your neighbors decide to shoot aerials over your property, scaring your cows and making you spend hours trying to find and herd them back home?
It's one thing to decide for yourself to not shoot fireworks in order to avoid scaring your livestock. However, it's another when you suffer the same problem because of others having fun, isn't it?
-
I kinda like them. It’s a horrific waste of money and I would never buy them myself but when one goes off nearby it always sounds like “f the government” and gives me a little hope that I’m not totally surrounded by sheep

same here but there's a time for them. It wouldn't be such a problem if people waited for NYE instead of setting them off in the wee hours throughout the year. That's why we can't have nice things...

I know you read some of my comments.
I remind you all my neighbors have the same animal problems, I have,
so we are all pretty quiet here.
We generally all live on 5 or more acre lots so we are not that close together.
so a few bottle rockets aren't a problem.
Besides if someone has too much fun they'll
be the ones helping me catch the cows. The cows may very well end up in their yards
and my neighbors have some really nice gardens and small farms.
My donkey got out one day and pretty well destroyed one of the
neighbors fruit frees before I could catch and get a harness on the animal.
His name is "Buddy", good guard Donkey.
Merry Christmas and a happy new year to all.

Like anything else, adhere to the rules as to when you can set them off. And when you need to stop. This way people with pets and people who are sensitive to the noise and smoke etc. can at least prepare for it.
We are all trying to live together as a society, and we all have different enjoyment activities. What makes it work is if we respect that.
Just my 2.35678 cents. :shaka:

Another bunker buster was released about 9pm yesterday.
Not as Earth-shaking as the previous, but still above average.
One has to imagine there's tons more where that came from if they aren't worried about running out before New Year/s Eve.

Where I live it's been a regular occurrence over the past 10 years or so. It's the same general area from the view of my house. One area is to the north side of my house and the other area is on the eastern side behind my house. These two areas always set off aerial fireworks starting from after Thanksgiving all the way to couple of days after New Years.
Of course it's a 360 degree view when NYE comes around. It seems to rival NYE on the Vegas Strip at times.
-
No one sets of any fireworks where I live on the BI. NYE is dead quiet like all the other nights except when someone is shooting at something.
But that is just an occasional occurrence. People around me use their money to buy food and other necessities, not blow them up.

its cringey when I see a middle aged person light off an aerial and run off. also cringey when I hear people say it is to "scare off evil spirits" grow up. c'mon man!

Yep. And it doesn't work. Evil is everywhere nowadays. Almost seems like it has an opposite effect.

What if exploding fireworks terrorizing pets and neighbors is the evil?

this year, just like all previous years, Waipahu was ape-shit crazy with aerials and industrial-grade firecrackers. no change as far as I can tell, however residual red paper rubbish seems to be a lot less. JMHO.
Happy New Year! ;D

perfect example of how laws intended to curb a certain type of activity won't work. Apply this to firearms and only those law-abiding citizens are disarmed.

I beg to differ. Over the past couple of years I just watched people that I thought I knew go completely insane over a case of the sniffles.
If the evil was allowed to prevail I would be in a concentration camp right now, but enough normies snapped out of it and told our local kine globalist toadies to go f themselves.

When the smoke blows through my window on NYE it gives me some hope that the human spirit won't be so easily crushed by Governor Greed and Chief Wiggum

If someone is going to break the law, it should be in furtherance of civil liberties or a need greater than the risk of penalties for noncompliance.
Someone robbing a liquor store isn't exercising their liberty by defying the law. Same for rapists, murderers, and home invaders.
I believe refusing to follow any law -- including those banning certain fireworks -- should not be characterized as "telling the gov't to go f themselves." They are merely indulging themselves because enforcement of certain laws lets them get away with it. Nothing more.
Kind of like having 30 rd mags for your AR. It's not an act of defiance when an ambiguous law isn't being enforced.
-
Annually, I usually hear and see NYE spectacular fireworks displays in Hauula from about 8pm to 1am.
Was 80% quieter this year.
Started later with less thru the night and ended right after midnight.
I guess biden-omics is working !

Yeah but WHY is it selectively enforced? Is it just laziness or a tacit recognition of how fragile their power base really is?

I think because the law was poorly crafted -- in the case of mag limits. Carving out an exception for "long guns for which there is not a handgun capable of using the same mag" was evidence of a lawmaking body with little understanding of firearms and the engineering involved. By also banning "assault pistols" it muddied the waters. Since nobody can possess such a pistol, it's illogical to ban the magazines they would have/could have used. But the law wasn't written for logic. So, rather than worry about enforcing it, they simply keep it as an additional charge should someone be arrested for other crimes. But, carry a 17 round mag in your Glock 17, and any Cop that finds out will show no hesitation in cuffing and stuffing you.
As for fireworks, an arrest and conviction requires they know who possessed them and who set them off. Without witnesses or video evidence to use in court, the Cops are all but powerless to do anything. This year, there were ads from HPD saying if you see someone with illegal fireworks, report them. HPD needs your help to enforce the laws.
Without citizens helping them enforce the law, I guess they can't enforce it on their own to the degree needed to put a stop to it.
-
if God said he will grant us immortality if we all just stopped lighting illegal fireworks for ONE year we would f8ck it up. Based on my observations and interactions with people here would trade 2a rights for fireworks rights. There's likely more firework injuries than firearms injuries this past year.
I remember back in the 80s when there were such things as firework vendors setup in private parking lots etc. the illegal fireworks problem wasn't as bad as now. Its when they started piling on laws when it got worse. Or maybe its a stupid Hawaii culture thing. If costs of living are so high we got our priorities all wrong.

My area had the most ariels and bomb noises ever since we moved here in 2019.
34 tons, my ass. I call BS.

guessing that's about 3 containers?

It's obvious that people want fireworks, knowing the risks, in Hawaii so they should be made legal. State can tax it and educate people about fireworks safety.
Can't really enforce a ban on fireworks when LE and Fire are some of the ones playing them.
-
My area was much lighter this year. Started later, ended earlier, and significantly fewer shells during the big send off.
-
I heard a rumor that HPD was going to be flying drones to catalog peoples areas who were launching illegal fireworks.
I'm not sure how accurate that rumor is, but around 1120PM-ish, besides quad-rotor drones, I did see about 5 fixed wing drones flying over the Waipahu area, circling about.
On another line of thought, this years explosions did feel slightly less compared to last years.

That is what I like about you. You are one of the few sane voices commenting here.
Just because some a$$ makes a law doesn't make it so
:wtf:
Work to make it safer for all and tolerate the people that don't act the way you want them to.
Hawaii and many other states, haven't figured that out yet. They are all control freaks.
:grrr:

I wouldn't be surprised if HPD bought fixed wing drones, along with ATVs for the beach and Camera dogs for places they don't want to personally go.
-
no they were piloted planes
fixed wing "drones" require more 'piloting'
-

Well if they were piloted planes, they did a good job in their maneuvers. Flight path wise, 2 would trail one and they pretty much branched and circled specific spots around Waipahu.
I think some drone vids on Youtube may have caught a plane in view here or there. but no high res quality.
But looking up from the ground, I guess I dismissed them as drones due to size.
Edit: The rumor about HPD buying drones, was from this KITV article that friend sent, I know its dated, but that's how rumors always snowball.
