Spirit of Aloha strikes again!

So many bad arguments it's difficult to know where to start.

Author is "editor-at-large"

What does that even mean?

Interesting bio - https://www.civilbeat.org/author/naka-nathaniel/.  You'd think he would be supporting gun rights with his experience and history.

...his child has only been to the ER five times (three due to animal attacks.)

...going to Darfur to continue reporting on the genocide (it was the fifth of sixth trips to the region.)

...was detained while working in Iran, Sudan, Gaza and China.

He is one of a handful of Americans who has been in North Korea, but not South Korea.

Being anti 2A is like having TDS. No amount of facts would change his mind until he's willing.

It's common for some people to be against guns, even to the point of preferring to be killed than to use a gun to defend themselves.

Being a pacifist is worthy of respect, but it means they still need Billy Jack to save their asses.

What happens when Billy decides to stop fighting other people's fights?

I have no problem if someone doesn't like guns. Fine, then don't buy one. I have a problem when they try to take mine away or make me a criminal because they failed to understand the Constitution.

That was always the punchline (pun intended) in the Billy Jack movies.

The pacifists, especially Jean who ran the "school," was always trying to teach him how to follow their pacifist ways.  Yet, in the end, it was always his ability and willingness to take out those who harmed the people at the school which dished out the justice they sought.

Many of the fights he found himself in would have been one-sided if he didn't stand up for himself or others.  Yet, Jean still persisted to preach to him the ways of the pacifist.

Just remember that the article is an "opinion " piece.
Like Dirty Harry says, "opinions are like as----s, everybody has one."

It was written by an adventure-seeker who was more interested in traveling to dangerous countries instead of taking care of his own family.
I guess he feels that since he traveled to all these countries, that qualifies him to be a journalist/editor at large.

If such were the case, when I grow a beard and put on a baseball cap then I will be a tactical military operator youtube star.

There are literally millions of ex-Navy Seals, Green Berets, Delta Operators, Rangers, Force Recon out there than there ever was in the military since the beginning of our nation.

I have personally talked with one person who claims he was in Special Forces.  He wasn't lying.  What he didn't disclose is that he was attached to Special Forces as an Army Cook.

Yeah, grow a beard, put on a lumberjack jacket and jeans and voila, you are ex-something.  You choose your fantasy, army cook.

There are lots of jobs in the military, both active duty and civilian, that provide support for the warfighters.

Still, many of those positions may require mobilization with the operators.  That means they have the same training -- perhaps to a lesser degree -- as the operators.

That training might include jump school, chem warfare, survival, firearms, etc.  If they can potentially find themselves close to or in areas where there's fighting, they also need the capability to defend themselves and others.

As a computer, communications and intel officer, I wasn't running into battle, but I was very close to the front lines supporting air operations for the AWACS mission crews.  That means I have more training in military-related functions than someone who never leaves the US.  One of those functions was the destruction of classified material should we be overrun, which meant using gasoline and thermite grenades to destroy the magnetic tape library and all hard drives in our deployable computer van.

Point being:  don't judge someone you think is "just a cook."

Like Flap said, and there are also CST's who are attached to SF units who are not SF but they are on the front lines with them.  Common would be women because Muslim women cannot or will not talk to non-family men (SF operators) often.  So to have another female there to talk to them helps get intel.  There's a woman who's actions are unknown for another few years until they're declassified.  She died in combat and her story is waiting to get declassified.  Basically, she was a badass in the SF community, and wasn't butch either.

Another example are the "Night Stalkers".  They go thru much of the same training as operators do, but aren't operators.  So it isn't uncommon for them to pick up some guys who they recognize from selection.

Then you have guys who claim they're "basically SF" cause they were attached for a few months to a SF unit.  I know of a few guys who claimed this.  They do not have a tab nor went thru selection.  This was during the early stages of OIF and FO's were much needed.  Knew a few 68W's and none of them made this statement, even when they were attached to SF units as well.

What I was trying to get at is people attached to these units claiming to be who they are not.  Attached to a SF unit does not make you a Green Beret.  Even if you went to the front lines.

I respect all MOS's in the military.  Everyone's job is just as important and special to the overall effectiveness of the military being able to fight.

I can picture it now..

"Our squad is about to be overrun by 100 heavily armed taliban fighters, request support"
"Don't worry we got you covered.  We're sending you a dozen green berrets"

A dozen cooks show up with supper.
