Title: Handgun Permit to Acquire no longer needs a serial number
Post by: changemyoil66 on June 06, 2024, 08:29:37 AM
A few gun stores have posted about this. But, HPD will no longer email the PTA to you.  IMO, violation of the Yukutake settlement as emailed PTA's for firearms.

State law never required the serial number for PTA, but HPD went above and beyond to require them.

Danger Close has a much better explanation.

PTA is good for 30 days. This allows you to go home with the handgun same day.

Unconfirmed: If you want the PTA emailed to you, then you have to provide the serial number and go thru the old process.  As in this PTA is only good for that 1 handgun.

PTA is good for 30 days, so you can buy as many handguns as you want in that timeframe. This allows you to go home with the handgun same day.

So PTA 30 day option, caveat is no serial but have to pick up in person.  But then similar to old long gun permit (albeit 1 year coverage) and just need to register.  Might try that option.  Been planning on picking up a couple of pistols.

Gotta run the math. If 1 needs to take time off from work to go back to HPD to just buy 1 gun, then email is better. Plus gotta find parking again, wait in line, etc...

His post said he doesn’t know if there’s a limit for applying. Seems like it’s still 1 per permit.

Firearms international posted still 1 per permit.

Here on Maui I have been able to acquire several handguns on the same permit. But they still required all the details.

Kind of surprising how the requirements vary between Islands and who at the PD handles your paperwork.

My mistake.

I believe they're just complying with the law
HRS134-2 (e)

" Permits issued to acquire any pistol or revolver shall be void unless used within thirty days after the date of issue.  Permits to acquire a pistol or revolver shall require a separate application and permit for each transaction.".

So I’m assuming this means, can apply for pta for pistol first . Instead of buying the pistol first, not taking it home, apply for pta till you get em. Then pickup the pistol?

The reason the permit has to be picked up is the original is needed now that the gun info isn't needed.  If the permit were emailed, then a person could print multiple copies and buy multiple guns with it.

Yeah I know criminals wouldn't apply for a permit in the first place...

So this would mean that every time you go to the station to get a long gun permit or to pick one up or to register a gun you should always pick up a pistol PTA just in case you find something good that month! (Or am I missing something?)

Has anyone applied for a pistol permit without the gun’s serial number?

Do you have the option to have it emailed like the traditional way of applying with the serial number?

Or, do you need to pickup the no serial number pistol permit in person?

Can you still do online registration with a no serial pistol permit?

Thanks in advance.

I just did this on Wednesday (HPD open till 6:30pm on Wednesdays). I was told at the window that everything is done in person, no emailing of permit and no online registration. That was my understanding anyway so . . .
