My brother-in-law said he saw a sign at HPD that said starting 2013, you will need to take a gun safety class before being issued a permit to aquire. He said the hunters ed class would suffice as well as the pistol classes. Anyone hear of this new procedure? Anyone else saw the posting while waiting in line at HPD?
-
hmm. granted, most people have the class from their pistols, but i would need one to renew my permit...
-
Isn't it like this now? Or is that just for pistols?
-
You have to take a course for pistols; no classes are needed for long guns.
-
Thanks for the verification. I wonder what other steps will be added to the registration process

I never took the hunters safety class, but does it really teach you how to safely fire a handgun or rifle? I know there is no range time for it so its usefulness is questionable for me.
-
It never really made sense to me that they would require the person to take a handgun safety class, but not a rifle safety class.

Unless there's been a revision to HRS 134-2 that slipped under the radar this past legislative session, there is no legal grounds for this.

I was just there Monday and I didn't any new signs.

Beat me to it...Any changes would've made the news and there would've been hearings on the matter.

I'm sure the long wait in line caused a temporary loss of reading comprehension.

He was probably was delirious by that time.

Hunter's ed allows you to get a hunting permit. No requirment to take this class for a longgun.

As far as safety goes, Hunter's ed only teaches you to be aware of where you point the barrel. It covers way too many subjects so there isn't enough time to go in depth on any single subject. Good general info though, which should serve as a decent starting point for your own research into whatever interests you.

I was at hpd this morning, and there is a sign on the registration window stating things for 2013. I asked the officer behind the window and he told me it was basically a reminder of what was needed to obtain your permits (ie. proof of citizenship for people born outside the US, and hunter Ed card for gun permits). He said it was posted because they don't have the time to remind people who don't bring all the proper documentation.
-
Ok, thanks for the clarification.
-
What it is saying is they probably won't be letting you register if you don't have all your paperwork. In the past, say you forgot your affidavit, they would let you fill out the paperwork and bring it back with you. Now they won't.

The class very briefly covers safety in general. It is really not geared towards teaching pistol related safety. IMHO if you want a for real pistol safety class take LIFE, OGC, or NRA sponsored pistol safety class.
