I picked this up from the Hawaii Hunters Education Manual.
- Learn to add and subtract declination from your compass reading.
- West declination is added.
- East declination is subtracted.
- Know the proper degrees for each area.
- Mark the spot where you are. Mark the spot where you are going. Do this before you leave camp or your vehicle.
- Place your compass on the map. The baseplate edge joins the two spots.
- Point the "N" to the magnetic north on the map.
- Hold the compass level in front of you.
- Turn your body until the north-pointing end of the needle is directly over the needle pointing to the "N."
- The direction of travel arrow now points to your destination.
- Repeat these steps until you find your spot.
- To find your way back, point the direction of travel arrow toward your starting point. Then backtrack.
