In the news and reading this story makes me think of self defense with a gun. https://www.khon2.com/aloha-authentic/the-law-of-the-splintered-paddle/
1. "Stories share, while in search for a human sacrifice, Kamehameha spotted and pursued innocent fishermen along a Puna coast."
Sounds like a justified self defense shooting.
2. "Following the dazing blow, Kamehameha’s steersman arrived to help free him when spears began to fly their way."
Sounds like Kamehameha could've used a gun too
3. "Kamehameha proclaimed his most famous decree: “Let old men, women and children be free to lie by the roadside without fear of harm.”
Not sure how this relates to that story, but these people should have guns too.

Imagine how freaked out he must have been. The most powerful warrior who would knock spears out of the sky with his bare hands almost done in by a couple skinny fishermen and an old rotten paddle.
Firearms changed warfare forever, and now it doesn't matter so much how big and strong you are. Odd how Splintered Paddle almost seemed to anticipate this shift.

If he was here in the banana republik of hawaii he would be immediately arrested and charged with.......something. They'll think of something.
Oh wait. Maybe not. In hawaii, judges are one of "them".

He wasn't the most powerful warrior; just allegedly the one prophesized to consolidate the islands under one ruling chief.
My ancestor was the chief who trained Kamehameha and was far more renowned as a warrior in his lifetime. Sadly, he became a footnote in Hawaiian history, overshadowed by the mythology of Kamehameha.

Ironically, one of the first things Kamehameha allegedly did after consolidating power was to strip his chiefs and warriors of their firearms, allegedly because he knew the threat they posed should any object to his rule or wish to overthrow his government the way he overthrew the other chiefdoms, a task he only could have accomplished with firearms and artillery.
