Title: Using Canned Goods
Post by: oldfart on September 28, 2024, 05:27:35 PM
In the ongoing effort to cycle through my stash of canned foods, I posted a message about beanie weenies.
I also have a large stash of canned tuna.

Tuna sandwiches are easy
Tuna musubi is classic.
Tuna with Mac and cheese is good.

But I am going to try making smoked Tuna chip dip to eat with fresh veggies and tortilla chips. I never tried doing that before.

Smokey tuna dip recipe was awful.
Stick to Mac and cheese or tuna sandwiches or musubi.

The only good dish i've had with tuna was tuna casserole.  Many different recipes to play with.

Tried Tuna Helper once.  Got a bad case of indigestion.  I don't remember which flavor -- probably mac & cheese.

I used to carry a small snack to work for a quick lunch.  I played racquetball almost daily during my lunch hour, so needed something fast and easy.

Can of tuna
6-8 wheat crackers (Milton's)
banana or orange

Just enough to ward off starvation until dinner.

Mac seems a little cheesy!

I finally used up that korean spam.
A simple omelet was pretty good and the musubi was pretty good too.
Getting tired of canned food, but with the dock strike, it might come in handy.

Opened up a can of green peas mostly to supplement my Dawgs food. I liked the canned peas tho...
I also opened up fruit cocktail. I used to like that when I was a small kid. Now I want more. Lol.

"Back in the day" raising 2 daughters solo, one of their favorites was
Tuna, peas, macaroni and cheese.
2 cans, one box, quick & easy.
One still enjoys, the other became a chef.

Try make tuna patties. One egg, crush up one small bag (depends on how many cans) of sour cream and onion lays potato chips, black pepper, fry em up! Not bad….

I have a case of Chef Boyardee Spaghetti, and some cans of their ravioli. Yuck. I'll only open them when the SHTF. It is very hard to mimic the taste of freshly prepared pasta. Where is everyone getting their boxed durum spaghetti from? Nothing at my Costco or Whole Foods Market stores.

A few months ago I was getting pastries from Valerios in Waipahu Seafood City.
I wandered through the store and they had some various flavored cans of tuna. So I bought some to try.
This is "calderetta style tuna".  It is tuna in a tomato sauce with peas, carrots and potatoes. It is mostly sauce and vegetables with very little tuna. Taste was pretty good but you have to dump it over hot rice to make a meal. It was ok but I wouldn't buy it again. See pic.

I recently got some newer MRE, so I thought I better use the old ones. This is a case from 2014. I will try one every week.
Maybe the meatballs tonight or tomorrow.

To make a healthier meal, I added canned peas and ate it with rice. It was actually not too bad, but I don't think I would buy it again.
