NZ Navy hydrographic vessel ran aground, caught fire, sinking, of the coast of Upolu, Samoa.
I wonder if the wife was a passenger.

comments on twitter (https://x.com/stillgray/status/1843234222510858488) are brutal:
At least it sunk with pride.
That ship went down lickety split.
Loose lips sink ships.
Did she get promoted?
It's equity - every lesbian should have a naval ship to sink!
No semen in this seawoman sank sea ship the ocean says no to no semen sea captain.
So she gonna have to pay that back or ...
One could say the ship went straight to the bottom.
New Zealand will giver her a medal of valor soon.
We have a diversity of experiences.
Did she do the haka before plowing the reef?
Women can do anything a man can do.
Another one going down.
Ship went down on her.
and my favorite: I hope they did the haka before abandoning ship.
reminds me of the USS Fitzgerald (2017), and the KNM Helge Ingstad (2018, Norwegian).

The cause of the grounding remains unknown and requires further investigation, the
Defence Force said following the incident.
Samoan authorities had issued a marine warning for the island's south coast over the
weekend.
Winds of up to 25mph and ocean swells of up to 13ft were forecast around the time of
the incident.
The New Zealand military said rescuers had battled currents and winds that pushed the
life rafts and sea boats toward the reefs and 'swells made the rescue effort particularly
challenging.'
Yep. A total mystery.

The ship was placed into service in 2019.
I imagine the NZ Navy is still making payments....

Final Report came out.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qwkGsfPJX20 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qwkGsfPJX20)
they were making a turn, for the middle part of the turn, they steered a course to north (land), put it in autopilot, and then forgot they were in autopilot as the ship continued towards land. Ship wouldn't respond to requested change in course to complete the turn to east. In a panic, they increased power while pointing the controls for the thrusters to turn, but since in autopilot, the thruster steering was controlled by the computer, not the operators' steering wheel, and it just went downhill from there.
after they ran aground, somebody said "do you want to take it out of auto now". seriously!
Captain issued orders to abandon ship, but told people to "go to the loo first", and maybe get warm clothes, and then decided instead to expedite getting off the ship.
Apparently, the ships captain did not have the necessary training on how to operate the ship, it has some unusual technical propulsion features which proved to be their undoing.
DEI strikes again. JMO.

Damn if this report weren't true, I would think it was a draft for a comedy movie similar to the "Naked Gun" series.........
