Born and raised here and I still don't get the infatuation with fireworks.

New report says 4, maybe more fatalities.
I wouldn't be surprised if some of the dead are young kids.
Some people blame government or cops.
I blame stupid adults who want to impress their friends and neighbors. I bet there is video on social media from that neighborhood.
.......
"Hey look at me cuz I get plenty money fo' burn and I know da guy dat bring in the stuff...and I know da cops so I'm da best!"

I was thinking about Mililani, and the Mililani Town Association in particular.
We get fined for homes that need painting, grass needing cutting, debris from tearing down fences and walls that sit longer than a few days, and for anything that we do they require a design committee permit to do if we didn't get one such as installing exterior surveillance cameras.
They police the areas to ensure home owners comply with the Mililani Home Owners' Covenants and bylaws which lay out how properties are to be kept up, including what colors your house can be.
There's a section on noise, stating you can't make any noise that disturbs the neighbors weekdays from 9PM to 8AM, and weekends from 9PM to 9AM. That includes operating lawn equipment, electric saws and other tools, and loud music.
It would be very interesting if a home owner decided to sue the Town Association for not policing the fireworks noise after 9PM. Seems they are sticklers for the rules but with exceptions that are not in the MTA bylaws.
Since they make money in part through fines, they could fund the entire year on fireworks violations alone -- at least until people decide continuing their tradition is no longer worth it.

Blangiardi wants to be tough on illegal fireworks and wants people to call it in.
I wonder how many people he called in to police last night? Mustve been a lot.
-
a gun shot is reported and a police respond with a list of known firearms owners in area.
illegal fireworks reported and dispatch is meh....maybe...
on another note, this should be a great example of how laws FAIL People should stop looking towards government for answers and realize the problem and answer is with the person in the mirror. Time for adults to grow up.
-
news just reported that "homemade fireworks" were found at the scene...
-
they should go after the manufacturers of the fireworks in China

I was watching a YouTube video of the fireworks in Waipahu. Must have had several million $$ worth of fireworks going off from 2359 to 0005.
Meanwhile, where I live in Puna, I didn't hear a single firecracker or any other type of fireworks noise.

HALAWA HEIGHTS, Hawaii (KHON2) — Honolulu police say there have been hundreds of 911 calls over the past couple of months to report illegal fireworks, but no arrests.
Some residents said the nightly explosions are only getting worse.
Jim Cook has lived in Halawa Heights for decades and used to pop fireworks as a kid on New Year’s Eve.
“You can understand that. What I’m against is fireworks going off every night ever since Thanksgiving. 1030 at night on a weekday. I mean, everybody’s asleep,” he said, “Boom! My friend who’s a Vietnam vet, we were eating dinner one night. Concussion bomb went off. He dove under the table. It’s really hard on people.”
Jim’s pup is not a big fan of the nightly explosions either.
“She jumps up, she starts pacing back and forth, she quivers, she drools, and she can’t settle down after that,” Cook said. “I spend up to 2 hours petting her and trying to calm her down!”
Honolulu police said there have been 624 calls on Oahu to report illegal fireworks since Sunday, Nov. 3, but there have been no arrests made in all of 2024.
Pearl City’s major said officers can not take a suspect into custody without a witness.
Igniting fireworks for the holidays? HFD reminds you of this
“If they’re willing to meet with an officer, that will help us. If not, we’ll get the call in the office, we’ll check the area. Many times they’ll see the officer coming, officers are patrolling with a blue light on, and people will run,” said Maj. Randall Platt.
Video evidence can be shown to responding officers to aid in an arrest, but a Kaneohe lawmaker said prosecution can be tricky too.
“Department of Law Enforcement has told me that in order to prosecute someone successfully for an aerial, you need to actually find a piece of that aerial. And when you’re shooting the evidence, you know, a thousand feet in the air, it’s difficult to find a piece of that piece of that firework,” said Rep. Scot Matayoshi.
-
How about videos of the retardeds setting off the illegal fireworks?
Would that be enough evidence?
Or will the Aloha Spirit kick in.

the only way this stops:
every cop has to be called up on duty for patrol from 11pm to 1am New Years Eve, double overtime or whatever, and be driving up and down the streets of the known hot spots. They need to flood the hot spots with overwhelming police presence, stifling police presence. no need patrol in Mililani or Hawaii Kai or those kinds of genteel places. They know where the hot spots are.
if a cop driving down the street sees somebody lighting off something in the street or driveway and it goes into the sky, he's gotta jump out of his comfortable car and bum rush the guy and tackle him in the street, with everybody filming it on their smart phone, uploaded to Youtube "excessive violence". Yeah, not happening. so don't expect anything to change. in the mean time, C&C rakes in the revenue from the permits (taxation), "The King was in his counting house, counting all his money" (paraphrased slightly).
Customs inspectors gotta inspect the containers coming in from the sources (China?), probably can whittle it down to specific sources, specific destinations (too hard work). But of course, they'll says it's not possible to inspect that many containers. don't want to make the effort.
it would take hard work, unpleasant work, it would be costly, and extremely unpopular work for there to be any effect. yeah, not happening anytime soon.
for the Salt Lake incident, investigative journalist should look into how many times complaints were called in for that location, and HPD did nothing. Where they got the fireworks from, HPD should investigate that. Isn't that what detectives are supposed to do? Sherlock Holmes? Will they? don't hold your breath.

There's no need for excessive force. They have dash and body cameras plus any other cameras they feel the need for. That's good evidene of what was observed. If it's too dark, just drive up close enough to hit them with the headlights or spotlight.
There are also drones that can sneak up on law breakers and take very good low-light video. With the noise and amount of distractions going on, drones would easily go unidentified.
All I'm saying is there are ways of gathering evidence short of tackling the person in the act.

Thanks to the fireworks bans now kids are making pipe bombs.
Is it too late for us to go back to m-80s and bottle rockets?
-
This was nothing more than an accident.
Question:
Had aerials and others been legal, would the owner have had as much stockpiled? As in, it's easy to buy off the shelf, so no need by in bulk.
I hope everyone here pays attention to what happens next. HI is 1 active shooting away from banning "assault rifles". The ban came close last year, and there was no active shooter here. Bruen will not save you as our lawmakers and AG don't care and will lie to pass bills.

i once asked a patient who was a longshoreman, "how come they cannot use dogs to find the fireworks?"
he told me, "you don't need dogs to figure out which containers have the fireworks. humans can smell the gunpowder right away."
so the issue is not detection, it's the corruption...

So, fireworks in a shipping container were confiscated in 2009, Chang was charged federally in 2011, and the jury found him not guilty in 2012.
If it hadn't been for the Waikele explosion and the five deaths it caused, would there have been any investigation or charges? What was the delay between 2009 and the 2011 explosion?

If people want to blow themselves up I say let ‘em rip. Personally I love watching the illegal fireworks displays but never participate because its a dangerous waste of money. It does kind of make up for the fact that the 4th of July here sucks, though.

so stupid to call this a tradition. It's illegal. As I speak someone is firing them off right now eve of Jan 3 in Waipahu Mauka. If everyone smoked crack on NYE is that also a "tradition"?

I’d rather live next to scofflaws than obedient sheep who still wear face diapers.
-
they should go after the manufacturers of the fireworks in China
They should hire more CBP employees and train more explosive sniffing dogs.
-
Is it true they had a firework display on a table; the table fell over and the fireworks exploded a cache of other fireworks?

I have to disagree with this. Fireworks are legal in many places. The manufacturer should not be held responsible for the customer's using their product unsafely. That will lead to mass transit only as cars are used irresponsibly. That being said, people need to realize that they are "playing " with explosives. They acquire enough to equal the explosive power of cases of dynamite, then treat it like a single firecracker. If a professional fireworks display that uses less than half of what people acquire here, there are required to have explosive experts, secure containment, fire mitigation, and safety protocols in place. Here, we replace all that with alcohol. The youtube videos of new years here, shows there is obviously no enforcement, either on the day of celebration, or in the policing of importing explosives, probably due to corruption. But we all remember the disaster when the bunker of confiscated fireworks killed someone. As much as we need more enforcement, more emphasis needs to be put on the fires, destruction, and the loss of life, in a way that emphasizes, the irresponsible, and dangerous way theyexplosives were handled. Highlight how explosives are safely handled and precautions taken to prevent an incident like this. Chronical the lives lost, hurt, and forever changed by the reckless behavior of the people, and how many people are doing the same thing, but being "luckier" than others.

I was being facetious paralleling the anti gun strategy of suing gun manufacturers. In the case of illegal fireworks in Hawaii it is proven year-after-year that laws simply do not work. Legislators on their high horses think they can legislate the people but when they realize they can't they'll resort to more extreme ways of controlling the population as we shall see in 2025.
https://www.khon2.com/top-stories/cultural-tradition-or-deadly-risk-hawaii-grapples-with-illegal-fireworks-after-tragic-blast/
Wakai expects numerous bills to be introduced in the upcoming legislative session to address the illegal fireworks issue, but said pursuing civil penalties versus criminal might be more effective.
“So maybe that’ll be the consequence. You do that out of your house, we’re going to seize your house,” said Wakai. “I think if there’s consequences for bad behavior, you’re going to see a diminishing of interest in fireworks.”
And there appears to be agreement that laws without enforcement are meaningless and need to change.

you think they'll increase the permit fee? they never miss an opportunity to increase taxes/revenue, and that can be construed as "significant action".

I'm not a sociologist, psychologist or legislator but as an everyday citizen observing this illicit behavior year after year, I can make the assumption that Oahu residents have a lot of money to "burn" throughout the year, perhaps this disposable income can be better used as tax money. With this revenue stream, the legislators will create a task force or govt agency, appoint their friends and give them minimum 6 figure salaries.
Problem is it will affect all of us whether we followed the law or not. Everyone will pay / be punished.
i.e. ONE honu with straw up its nose? - ban plastic straws, bags, containers. No follow through on how effective these bans are but these "eco friendly" companies suddenly pop out of nowhere to provide eco friendly solutions....
I think Hawaii voters are too stupid to see simple cause and effect, hence, we get the 2-faced, selfish, opportunistic legislators we deserve.

I think this illegal fireworks black market stretches far and deep. I wouldn't be surprised that some public officials whether elected or appointed are profiting immensely from the "traditional" demand. It is difficult to believe that the importation of the large volume of illegal fireworks goes unnoticed by Hawaii officials.

How about a reduction in state and federal benefits for anyone in the family caught breaking the fireworks bans and permit process?
If they have money to burn (literally and figuratively), then they don't need as much SNAP/EBT, WIC, or whatever else they are receiving. The government should not be subsidizing prohibited activities. Sort of a self-inflicted fine that lasts at least 12 months, then they get the subsidies restored unless they are caught again. No different than being refused a space in homeless shelters if you don't follow the rules.

Although I wholeheartedly agree that laws with no enforcement don't work, our legislatures will be hellbent on creating new laws. As far as being facetious, I don't believe you need to be. If the ones that want to control us, can 't prevent us from having what we want, they have no other choice than to make sure we can't get what we want. IE: eliminate the product. My point was wifh fireworks, as well as firearms, the people with either needs to be responsible, educated on the hazards, and understand the risk, and risk mitigation. Simply put, KNOW WHAT THE F&^k YOU ARE DEALING WITH!! So many people only see the pretty colors and not realize that the power in it is the same and sometimes more than dynamite. If more people realize that they may treat is as dynamite and show it more respect. Not have it in a cardboard box, on the driveway while they are throwing sparks into the air. Wishful thinking I'm sure, but I can imagine better results than saying again" it's illegal" ,

I agree! Flashpowder used in common fireworks become unstable when they are wet and when they age. Far more unstable than powder used in ammunition. One example is the tragedy at Waikele years ago. I just hope that we outgrow this fascination with fireworks. We could spend the money on more important things. If we cared so much for the homeless we could have fed them with all you can eat buffet for a very long time or house them with all that money burned on NYE. Or we could have built the rail to circle the island by now.

We need to study the effects of firework emissions and their impact on climate change/greenhouse gases.
Lawmakers would jump on new fireworks bans faster than a cop on a free donut!

what happened? ??? something happened.
my neighborhood, usually by now, there's lots of "pre-event" fireworks going off, night and day.
so far, i haven't heard a single firework going off, and haven't seen any aerials. totally opposite of this time last year.
so, homeowners supposedly being liable put the kabosh on the fireworks festivities? where's the fun in that! ;D
