Title: Aiea/Halawa firing range
Post by: Gordyf on June 08, 2025, 09:19:11 AM
Just curious...There is an active firing range within earshot of my place in Aiea Hts. Pretty busy some days
Is it at Camp Smith? Or some other facility. I would expect a rifle range at a Marine base
I see google maps shows a range also in Halawa valley, Government I guess, but have a hard time believing that the sound would carry that far up and over the hill
from there.
Inquiring minds want to know ;)
Thanx!

It's in Halawa valley.  Government range, forgot who owns it, military or State

OK Thanx!
I am surprised the sound carries that far, but satisfies my curiosity.
Looks like mauka of the fuel storage in The south valley.
Close enough to Camp Smith to serve

It belongs to the Navy. Special Navy units, Fed police and certain agencies use it. The story is that Admiral Nimitz had the range made for his personal use during WWII.

The Navy range right next to Red Hill / Halawa prison is pretty austere, only 25m. They do rifle, pistol, and shotgun quals, I got qualified on the M16 and M9 there way back in 2006.

There must have been some improvements since then. It is now 1940 and getting dark.
Just heard several sets of  high power rifle fire, a number of shooters it seemed, rapid fire.
Gets a lot of action about this time of evening.

I actually was able to shoot there. It's a nice range with covered firing points and lighting for night time use. Brass clean up was easy due to the concrete deck. There was a water tank for the plumbing.
