"Hikers also feel there are enough warnings posted throughout the park."
“There’s plenty of warning signs before the trail, on the trail too,” Bourgeois said.
The Kokonut Coalition, a volunteer group that maintains the trail, said in a statement it “encourages everyone to heed all warning signs and take every precaution seriously.”

Since people are so desperate to go up there, the city should charge admission.
Use the money to pay for all the helicopter rescue missions.
Why should I (we) have to pay for these rescue missions?

What I have heard is if you get a helicopter ride down you pay $3500.00.

so they do get billed?
Like an ambulance ride?

The original proposal by the Kokonut Koalition was to charge a fee. Not sure why it wasn't implemented.

Speaking of money, the city could be facing a law suit from the incident.
Will the coalition also face liability? Who owns the land at the top?

If there's one thing I can't stand is a money grab for one's own stupidity.
I used to say "God bless the retardeds" but now I'm thinking they should all just go to hell.

Aren't there signs that let people know the trail is closed?
Are the lawsuits going to claim signs posted only in English are inadequate to warn visitors?

This isn't an official trail as it's not listed on the city/states websites of official trails.

Hundreds hike Koko Crater Trail despite closure

Here's when the Koko Crater hike will be closed for summit repairs

Planning to go hiking this week? Here’s where you shouldn’t go (for now)
https://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/2023/06/07/popular-koko-crater-hike-close-temporarily/
HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - If you’re planning on going on a hike this week, a
few of Oahu’s popular hiking trails are off limits for now as maintenance work is underway.
Koko Crater stairs will be closed on four separate days for replacement work. The city
is working with non-profit Kokonut Koaltion on the $426,000 project to revamp the popular
trail.
The city will be continuing its work to demolish and replace the World War II-era metal
platform at the summit, which had welcomed hikers after a long trek up.
A new steel structure designed for recreation is being put in its place.
The stairway and summit are scheduled to be closed while the helicopter is in use on:
Wednesday, June 7
Friday, June 16
Monday, June 26
Thursday, June 29
If i had no other information, it would appear the trail is still open, especially since half a million dollars was spent 2 years ago to replace the platform at the summit.

That's their disclaimer to avoid being sued. That trail is not for young children.
The same organizations that pressure government to keep trails like this open are the same people that step away when liability is to be addressed. Then they point fingers at the govt for safety issues. Our local government should be stern and say, " look that trail is dangerous and it puts first responders at risk as well, if you decide to hike up the trail and get hurt don't call 911, call your insurance agency. The govt. is not liable for your recklessness." case in point https://www.odmp.org/officer/860-officer-tate-douglas-kahakai
Now the rest of us who heed warnings are on the hook for a likely lawsuit.
Who decided that a trail in front of an active shooting range is safe? Mike raised warning signs years ago but they were all taken down.
-
When lawsuits are filed, the clause: "and all John Does" is often used to cast a wide net to
scoop up as much money as possible.
The Koalition probably has good intentions, just as the road to hell is so paved with.
The Koko Head trail has huge liability issues compounded by the large number of people
who use it. If the KHSC had the same number of helicopter emergency responses as the trail, would
it still be operational?
-
This is just like the haiku stairs debate.
-
The problem is the nanny state, the ease of winning lawsuits when people knowingly take the risks doing something. If people want to risk it then they should be able to. There was a bill in the legislature that didn't pass, but it absolved landowners of liability for recreation use of their land. That's how it should be.

An HPD officer will now be at the trail entrance to enforce the closure.

Already short of police officers and the west side of this island is becoming the wild, wild, west.
One less officer to use to address real problems because people hard head and don't follow signs. Or maybe they stupid and cannot read. Wouldn't surprise me one bit.
Just put this sign already:
YOO PASS DIS SIGN AND YOO GET HERT NO CALL FO HELP. NOBODY GOING COME.
-
The cheapest and easiest thing to do is cover the hole, even temporarily, and keep the trail open.
Can't be that hard

litigation is out-of-control in this country. a.k.a. "Litigation Lottery".
ACLU used to be a good thing, now they're just domestic economic lawfare terrorists. Except for the 2nd Amendment, lawfare is really pushing the envelope of the original Bill of Rights, IMHO, and has probably gone to far, far beyond what our Founding Fathers intended. and the liberals' infringement of the 2nd Amendment goes drastically in the opposite direction.
yeah, preaching to the choir.
