Hawaiʻi has been ranked No. 42 out of 51 in a new 2025 report on the best and worst school systems in the United States. The study reviewed 32 education metrics across all 50 states and the District of Columbia. The only states ranked lower were Alabama, Louisiana, West Virginia, Nevada, Oregon, Arizona, Alaska, Oklahoma and New Mexico.

Talk to any teacher, education starts at home. The students who do poor often lack discipline or parents who care at home.
So you can be in the worst state for education and still be OK as long as the above. But the X factor would be the association your child has with the stupid students as their attitude may rub off on them.

Very true. Stupidity is contagious. Eg. Social media viral pranks. I see that pattern all over the place. My family, my doggies, people driving cars, etc etc.

True. The more prepared kids are before entering preschool, the better they do throughout K-12. Parents who play learning games with their kids are helping more than using a tablet and TV as babysitters. It takes time, effort and some research on the parents' part, too.

Another factor in academic performance are siblings. If you have older siblings, they help to mold the younger kids into better students. New families in Hawaii tend to have less children. Less kids=stoopid kids. That's my theory.

Mississippi is one of the poorest states in the Union. I would think their education system wouldn't be that stellar either.

The other factor I know about is the multi-ethnic population in Hawaii. The language barrier is a real problem. I see (or hear it) it while shopping, walking around the park, at Kokohead shooting range, etc.
In my neighborhood, English is almost a second language.

My grandaughter teaches 2nd grade at Waipahu Elementary School. She is so frustrated because it seems English is almost non-existent in her students.
But every year these students get sent to the next grade up. All the way up. Till 12th grade where they smile at the video camera at graduation and declare:
"I is a graduate......"
