In Aikido, that's called Koshi (hip) Nage (throw).
Extremely well executed - big balls in evidence there!
It hinges on the principle of Irimi - entering the attack as it's forming, or if you are highly skilled, leading the attack itself.
You have to be completely unconcerned about your safety, i.e. no hesitation.
Thanks for posting this!

what did the perp have?

what did the perp have?
It was a machete.
He used an overhead strike, and that creates the opening to enter “underneath” it. Essentially the martial artist threw him over his right hip, along the same arc as the perp’s intended strike, holding the perps arm all the way into the pavement, where he then used it to twist the perp onto his stomach and pry the machete out of his hand.
It’s a beautiful thing, extremely well executed

I would have taken a few steps back and put 2 center of mass...
Just my opinion.

Despite my admiration for the Aikido technique, I am 100% with you on using the Indiana Jones approach to sword-wielding heathens instead, no contest.

That does have the quality of being a potentially permanent solution to the problem.
I'm too old to take an ass kicking and too young to die, so I'd probably opt for the same, mainly for the stand-off distance if offers.
Still, subjecting the criminal to the longer-lasting punishment of being locked up with people who don't need machetes to cause pain and injury year after year after year can be attractive, too.

Once the perp was down on the ground is when a couple to center mass would be nice! Cheaper that way for Joe taxpayer!

Hard to argue with, given that this asshole would have gladly murdered - he gave a shot after all, so yeah, your idea nicely ties up the loose ends!
