The 2 admitted do doing this on 12 other occasions.

I'd be curious to how many were reported stolen. And how many still had a serial number on them. 

It would be unwise for the cartels to leave a serial number on them.

I don't know that the cartels care that much. It is well known they get a huge amount of guns from America, I don't know that serial numbers would do much for Mexican authorities fighting crime there.
The people trying to bring them in wouldn't want to take the serial numbers off prior because that would be evidence of a crime and get them caught easier.
