I thought it was for people wrongfully incarcerated after more evidence comes out in the case.
Victims of racial profiling, mistaken identities, stuff like that.
I didn't know the President can pardon friends, family, and athletes just because he is an "avid sports fan".

Actually, it seems many are either pardoned or had their sentences commuted because the trial or sentencing was inappropriately applied, or the law didn't consider a person's circumstances before mandatory sentencing kicks in.
