Post by: ren on January 15, 2013, 07:36:28 PM

Nope.  But, most of them pay you cash for your gold (chain, bracelet, coin, etc) on the spot.

Just make sure that you are receiving fair value for what you have:

1) figure out how much actual gold you have in grams.  I.e., 14k = 14/24 = 58.3% pure gold

2) figure out the melt value of your gold in grams.  Current market price per (Troy) ounce divided by 31.1034768 (grams in Troy ounce) multiplied by 58.3% (percentage of pure gold in 14k).

3) You should receive at least 80% to 90% melt value of your jewelry if it is broken & not repairable.  You should get more if it is not damaged as they can resell it as jewelry.

4) Call around and ask how much they pay per gram of 14k gold.  Melt value = $1,687.00 (current market of 1 troy ounce of gold)/31.1034768 (grams in Troy ounce)X0.583 (percentage of pure gold in 14k)X1 = $31.64 per gram of 14k gold (market value).  So $25.31 to $28.48 per gram of 14k is okay.

Never sold any old gold chains. Not that I have a lot. The reason is cuz they buy it for scrap value which is crap compared to what you got it for. Like wirecounter said, weight times purity times current market price. You'd get more selling it on craigslist. If you need cash quick maybe try a pawn shop or these guys http://www.hiejb.com/ (http://www.hiejb.com/)

Good info...

Go to several local pawn shops... some pay more than others... a little under spot.. depending how it is...

DO NOT use the internet guys... they cheat and pay way less once they got your stuff! The scam is once you mail in your stuff... they have it. They quote a low price... if you don't like it, you have to pay the shipping back... plus insurance on the shipping! Good luck getting it back...  >:( That's the scam...

Sounds like you have experience with the mail-in scam. I never trusted mailing stuff to someone without having payment first.
