Hurricane season 2026
Yup, reviving this post as it's been a while and we've been more than lucky for the past few years, this year is an El Nino
Below is 2019-2020 post
Please feel free to add.
Hurricane season 2019
« Reply #1 on: July 23, 2019, 10:16:22 AM »
As a Prepper, it’s not the Zombie Apocalypse, Collapse of the Economy, or even Alien Invaders I fear, not even Broke Alien Zombies !
The following is a collection going back to 2013 and revised regularly with th help of others in the know here on 2a
2013
It’s something more natural, plausible and most likely to occur.
Who cannot help but to think what our situation here in Hawaii would be should a decent sized Tsunami or Hurricane hit the islands (again).
Worst case scenario in my eyes is the Big island drift drop with Tsunami (arriving Oahu in 10-12 minutes) wiping out Honolulu, including seaport and airport.
I know I don’t want to be on the Governments Fema Vacation Plan !
With that in mind, here are my preps.
#1 is water.
Our BOB’s each contain a Seychelle 28-ounce Water Filtration Bottle
This filtration bottle removes up to 99.99 percent of pollutants and contaminants found in water. Produces up to 100 gallons of filtered water.
$16.00
http://www.seychelle.com/
We also each have a 2 litre bottle of store bought.
I have considered downsizing this 50% due to weight.
At home and at our BOL, we have Monolithic brand water filters.
Build a Berkey for about $20.00 plus containers.
I splurged for two new 5 gallon buckets w/lids (another $20.00) but you could mount these puppies on 55 gal bbls if you wanted
http://shop.monolithic.com/
Here’s a real interesting page from the inside of Katrina.
Undoubtedly some of THE BEST prepper info I’ve ever read because it’s written after the fact, from personal LOSS experience !
http://www.theplacewithnoname.com/blogs/klessons/p/0007.html
# 2 is Food.
In the movies, you always see the cowboys eating beans so I thought that I should have plenty as my main staple.
WRONG.
Though man does not live by bread alone, wheat(s) are the most important food staple you need.
Almost 5 times more than beans and 1-1/2 times more than fruits and veggies.
These include wheat , rice, corn, pasta's and oats
I tend to stock up from the LDS cannery in Kalihi. Great place, nice folks and you don't have to change your beliefs to shop there.
( I think their idea is if you're already prepared, you won't need to try and take mine).
Wish I would have known about this place when i was raising my kids as I would have saved a bundle !
The prices are great averaging about a $1.00 a lb overall on most items.
Red and White wheat, pinto, black, and re-fried beans, dried milk, onoin's, carrots, sugar, oats, pasta, rice flour and more.
Buy in bulk along with their Mylar bags and Oxy absorber's and package your own or get the pre-packed #10 cans.
Pre-packed or DIY, shelf life ranges 10-30 yrs for most items.Order form attached but prices may differ slightly (old form).
On a side note, Unless you're ahead of the game and already have been on a "Healthy diet" your body is already acclimated to processed foods BIG TIME !
DO NOT try to bake bread solely out of hard red wheat ! It will make a weeks worth of MRE's seem like a laxative.
Naturally a grinder is required to flour out of the wheat berries
I still grind flour 3-1 white to red wheat.
Then of course is the stash of canned fish, meats, vegetables, mushrooms, spices and honey bought bulk from Costco and rotated faithfully through our pantry.
On the other end of the scale is the "emergency" and freeze dried foods which have a pretty good shelf life for most products but I find them rather expensive (and full of sodium).
Doesn't mean I don't have any, just that they are truly stashed and not rotated into our diet.
One I will promote is the SOS Foods.
Basic info below, prices may vary upon provider.
400, 2400 OR 3600 Calorie Emergency Food Bars
The SOS Emergency Food Rations are US Coast Guard approved and have a shelf life of 5 years from the date of manufacture and can withstand temperatures from -22°F to 149°F.
Non-thirst provoking formula offers maximum survival capacity with drinking water restriction under all environmental conditions.
2400 cal $3.95 ea- $139.00 CASE OF 40 $3.47 ea
3600 cal $5.95 ea $105.00 CASE OF 20 $54.5 ea
New Millennium Energy Bar - fruity flavors such as orange, lemon, cherry, apricot, tropical fruit, blueberry, coconut, raspberry and vanilla.
200 cal $1.25 CASE OF 144 $149.00
Got the calories, enviromentally stable, fair shelf life, water not necessary, light, compact, packeged air tight and water proof, not expensive and they don't taste that bad.
Regular ones taste kinda like short bread and the millenium flavors don't gag you with sweetness.
I keep these guys at home, in our vehicles, BOB's and BOL.
I'm going to jump into another topic intended for later entitled reading and education but I think the following is so important, it should be divulged asap.
LDS also has a "Prep Manual" out that is packed with awesome and pertinant info.
https://www.ldsavow.com/PrepManualGeneral.html
So much to do with food choices, amounts, storage, shelf life, canning, cooking, dietary information etc.... it's mind boggling
The first 14 pages are pretty much faith oriented with a peppering of the same for the next 15 informative pages.
The last 10 pages are of a personal view by the author.
The other 460 pages is some of THE BEST prepper info I've come across since my personal favorite, "Listening to Katrina".
"Listening to Katrina". is a MUST READ !
http://www.theplacewithnoname.com/blogs/klessons/p/0007.html
Happy to share, more to come, open to suggestion.

Collected and added comments of others from this post to save some time.
Just a reminder, we're entering Hurricane season.
Now's the time to rotate your gas supply's, drain, refill generators (including Fuel stabilizer in both) and fire them up.
Might as well tune up your vehicle ( oil change fuel/injector treatment, check tires, brakes etc...)
Rotate your go bag's clothes, food, water, med's, and OTC drugs
Drain, clean and refill your 55 gallon water barrels.
Check your supply of Charcoal, propane, bleach, TP, PT, long term food, water, med's, and OTC drugs.

I have also found that using a quartz Halogen brake light bulb really lights up the area.
I have one mounted high that lights up a 25' x 25' grand room plus hallways.
I use a 12v car battery but it works on less.
-
I got these solar yard lights for emergency indoor lighting. Just leave them out during the day and they run for hours at night.
IIRC they were about $20 for 6.
-
Along with my genny, I did purchase an inverter a couple years ago.
Power Bright PW2300-12 Power Inverter 2300 Watt 12 Volt DC To 110 Volt AC https://powerbright.com/product/pw2300-12
I keep a stash of car battery's some of which do not have the cranking amps but still hold 12vdc and work for lighting.
The better ones I can hook up to the inverter and it's enough to give the fridge or freezer an "update" and I can always recharge battery with vehicle.
Also use it out on the job to run power tools, paint sprayers etc...

Watching the Surf Models and there is some potential brewing for a very busy back half of July off the coast of Mexico
Possibly bad Hawaii weather this Summer and Winter predicted at least as far back as April.
El Niño likely — What it Means for Storms, Surf and Fire Risk in Hawaii
Summer:
-Weaker trade winds
-More humidity and uncomfortable conditions
-Increased chances of tropical cyclones
-Potential for wetter-than-normal conditions
Winter:
-Drier weather overall
-Increased risk of drought
-Larger north shore surf
Some of Hawaiʻi’s most significant weather events have occurred during strong El Niño years, including:
-Hurricane Iwa 1982 — caused widespread damage across the state
-Hurricane Iniki 1992 — one of the most destructive storms in Hawaiʻi history
-The 1998 “Big Wednesday” swell — with waves reaching up to 80 feet
-The 2015–2016 El Niño, which brought multiple storms and large surf events

My Garage Door Opener doesn't work. All the on and off surges blew something, probably the low voltage transformer.
I know, 1st world spoil brat problems.
Oh yeah, my palm tree fell down but the roots are still intact. I think I can re-plant it but it's heavy.
There are worst off people out there and here I am complaining about a door opener and a tree.
Oh, and I cooked rice on a butane stove and it overflowed. Then I burned it. :D

had a patient this morning still no more power in kaneohe near likelike/kahekili intersection
a couple patients from behind burger king to across hawaiian memorial park never lost power at all...
-
With the people complaining about closed stores, power outages, stores out of stuff, etc. I wonder how they would get through an Iniki direct hit on Honolulu.
-
i notice not as much donation/help drives this time as compared to the kona lows...
-

I don't know how people of Hawaii would handle a direct hit. I think the other islands would be more resilient than Oahu people.
When the outages occurred we were reading the comments on the RING App that people were posting.
Aiee Soos.

We have a lot of vehicles that are powered by electricity....

A lot of those vehicle owners also have PV at their homes and businesses.
As long as the panels survive, waiting for HECO to restore power isn't a problem for many.

Tesla just enabled AC power on the newer 2026 Model Ys with an adapter. Supplies 2.4kw at 120v. Could power a refrigerator and other electronics for a couple days or so.
https://www.basenor.com/blogs/news/tesla-enables-v2l-on-model-y-premium-turn-your-car-into-a-power-station
I've been waiting for Tesla to enable it on my car, but this won't work as I have an older Tesla. I got a small cigarette lighter inverter for mine, but it only supplies 150 W. This is what I got, it's compatable with Tesla's 16v battery. https://www.bixpower.com/product-p/da-150ns.htm

We're getting another storm this weekend. Wonder what all those HECO guys working around the clock are thinking now. And all the other people who bought emergency stuff and returned it already.

For the HECO guys, I feel their anxiety. Stuff like clearing debris and clearing access lanes maybe they should kinda wait. I dunno. That's what I would do. Take it case by case basis.
For the people that bought emergency stuff and returned it....... ::) Aiee Soos. Just keep it and adjust your budget accordingly.
Can you imagine the City Mill guy going "Eh you fackah, I saw you yestaday returning da stuff and now you like buy yom again? What you, re-todded?"

There’s a difference between observations that are general vs specific. In fact one could say they are two distinct categories.

Can you elaborate on what you're saying? Throwing out a declarative statement without context or references does't convey a complete thought. Unless there is no relevance to the thread, in which case I'll just forget I even asked.

I got this and keep a couple 12v battery's laying around.
Power Bright PW2300-12 Power Inverter 2300 Watt 12 Volt DC To 110 Volt AC
Came in super handy when the capacitor in my 2002 Coleman genny failed. Used the inverter hooked to my truck after I depleted those battery's.
On order and hope it arrives before next storm

Power out for 3 days and the freezer was nice and cold.
This guy is getting sued by battleborn btw.
He reported major safety issues and they flipped out on him.
Gotta be really careful with the brands you go with these days.

FYI. Anyone currently on SNAP who lost food from Lala-related problems like power outages and flooding can apply for SNAP Food Replacement benefits.

All the stores caught on couple years ago and do not allow returns on many items purchased before, during and right after a declared pending disaster or storm. All the big box stores, City Mill and many others do not allow returns on generators, bottled water, batteries, flashlights and many other items.

Good for these stores.
They are forcing short-sighted people to stay prepared.
-
Forecast models are calling for a large storm in our neighborhood around Sept 1.
We will see how it plays out since it’s so far away, but they’ve been remarkably accurate this year.
-
The steering winds in the Mid Pac slowed down, which means multiple storms are interacting with each other instead of maintaing a nice organized procession.
This is called the Fujiwhara effect, and it makes prediction with any accuracy nearly impossible.
We had a good practice run with Lala, so keep those lessons in mind and stay vigilant in case we end up facing something more intense next week,

A cat 4 hurricane with 155mph winds, possibly strengthening to CAT 5, has a possibility of circling around to Oahu. Almost all homes would be leveled. What is your plan?
-
My parents rent a large personal storage locker, so I'm thinking of putting valuables in there if Lowell turns more towards Oahu. It's a multilevel masonry building so it should withstand the winds. Maybe bag it up in trash bags incase it leaks. My house is gone with a direct hit. With a close hit, my house is at a low area on the street so I'll likely get flooded when the storm drains get overwhelmed.
Then leave my car in a concrete multilevel parking garage.
-
My plan is to tie down my doggies and hope for the best.
I also live next door to a school and emergency evacuation point. Most of my family is Mormon, so I grew up prepared.
I also keep my trees trimmed to a reasonable height.
Your most likely problem is power outages.
-
I just ordered some plywood for the windows. I've never had a Cat 5 aimed at me before, but I remember what my friend's house in Homestead looked like after Andrew. All that was left was the foundation.
https://www.weather.gov/lmk/HurricaneAndrew30Years
-
I have a tree that the City planted in front of my house and all these years it is just a fricken rubbish maker. This time of the year it is a ton of leaves. Earlier in the year it drops so much of it's seeds and flowers that burst and stick to the sidewalk and makes it slick and shitty.
I hope if the hurricane comes it blows that fucking thing down.
La La didn't hit Oahu dead on but in Mililani Mauka a ton of trees fell down. But the one in the front of my house didn't.
But seriously, if it gets real bad I'm going to tell my kids to put my grandkids in the bath tub and cover them with a mattress or something similar.
Let's all hope this hurricane, when it decides to turn north, it will be far from Kauai.
-
Oahu's going to be spared and Kauai avoids most of the damage though they might get more flooding.
This storm got me thinking what will I do if my house is gone, along with the whole neighborhood? With what I stated prior, I also thought I would fly my elderly parents to the big island to live with relatives. Or else they'd be living in community tents at refugee camps for a couple years. Probably take at least 5 years to rebuild the house. And where would they evacuate to during the storm? I'm guessing the evacuation would involve packing 700,000 people in office buildings and hotels.
If it was a cat 2 or 3 I'd stay home by myself, wear my body armor, and keep the storm drains clear to keep my home from flooding. Have caulk, spray foam, and sandbags/plywood ready to seal the house. If the house gets blown away, I'd park my car next to a secure wall nearby and ride out the storm.

Hurricanes are extremely unpredictable, especially when two big ones start interacting with each other. NHC forecast is just a best guess. If you’re not already stocked up then don’t wait until the last minute when everyone else is panicking. Better to feel a little silly next week than to get caught with your pants down.

My daughter on Kauai, lives in Lihue, said most of Lihue got their power back this evening.
Meanwhile here on the BI, my neighborhood was without power from August 15 to 27. Wasn’t bad for me. I have 2 PowerWalls and 4 generators, 12000, 7850, 4125 and 3000W. The two smaller ones are quiet inverters, the big one burned out its ignition switch so it is down until the new switch gets here on the 22nd. I am going to sell the EU3000, not enough power for my use. What happened to my big generator is why I need a backup to the backup.
-
Multiple major hurricanes.
Two damaging storms most likely a third.
This year is one for the record books.
