Title: Buying a gun in Japan
Post by: zippz on July 01, 2026, 04:37:05 PM
This is an interesting video on how to buy a long gun in Japan.  All weapons are normally illegal in Japan.  Even swords are illegal unless they are the traditionally handmade ones which are considered art, not weapons.  I guess this is why Japanese tourists are so fascinated with firearms here.  It also goes over their hunting methods.

Some highlights I noted
A foreigner may have to study for the written test for a few months as it's in a formal/legal japanese writting style.
Only the permitted owner can handle the gun,  No one else can touch it.
For most Japanese, the class is their first time ever touching a gun.  Unless they used one overseas like a shooting gallery in Hawaii.
To buy a hunting rifle, you must first own a shotgun for 10 years.
There's an additional process to get your hunting license.
Foreigners can go through the process to get a gun.
There is one gun for every 300 residents in Japan.

Sounds exactly like what the HI legislature gets wet dreams about.

I've seen Taiwan military catching spent brass as every brass casing needs to be accounted for.

I've seen podcasters discuss the training regimen when firing weapons in the Japan military.

When they do their run and shoot drills another soldier runs alongside of them with something to catch all the brass.  ::)

I wonder if this mindset will carry over when the shooting gets real.

They going to require our fireams safety course test to be written in Japanese.
