has been trying to pass an ordinance to

1. Levy a 2% of market value penalty tax on ALL residential properties on Oahu annually (i.e. $800,000 property = $16,000), called the "Empty Homes Tax"

2. To evade that penalty, the homeowner must prove to the City & County each tax year that the home was occupied for at least 180 days

3. How do you prove this?  They don't know, but it will by definition be information that should never have to be submitted to any government authority.

This is a poster child for the worst of the worst that communists can inflict on a community:

Does not reduce housing costs (see Vancouver https://cdhowe.org/publication/ripple-effects-impact-empty-homes-tax-housing-market/ )

Is blatantly unconstitutional, and was already found so in Commifornia.

After overwhelming public opposition killed this monster last year (Bill 46), the communists are now seeking to have it put on the November ballot via the Honolulu Charter Commission, obviously in the hopes clueless voters will buy their fraud.

Below is a story in Hawaii Free Press with a direct link to submit pre-fab testimony for the next meeting on the 20th, where it appears they will try to ram it through.

You don't have to be a homeowner to oppose this, as it is motivated purely by malice and will do NOTHING to improve housing affordability here.

Please take your shot at the cancer here - doesn't get any easier.
