Enlighten me..... Why do people put a muzzle brake on an AR15? There is barely any recoil, just loud as hell...
-
If I had my druthers, we'd all be shooting suppressors on our ARs, but the Hawaiian legislature just won't listen to me.

not true, when speed shooting a good muzzlebrake makes a big difference. when action shooting I can pull 6 shots in the A zone under 3 sec with a muzzle brake. without a MB it takes me 5 sec because I have to re-aim because the gun moves too much with a flash hider or without one. this is based on 3 targets close together 25 ft away.
on the bench the gun wont move too much or none at all. you can keep your eye on the target and watch the bullet punch the paper.
-
I'm trying to standardize with AAC brakes just because some day might mount a suppressor. Makes sense to me at least ;)
-
With 3-gun or competition type shooting where you're trying to get numerous rounds downrange as quickly and accurately as possible, the difference is noticable and are reflected in split times. Personally I make it a point to use battlecomps. There are cheaper comps out there but battlecomps seem to have the right balance between recoil reduction and not being too concussive to those around you.

If ever we meet at a range I'd let you shoot my AR's with brakes. They make a difference on quick follow up shots.

It also makes a .308 ar10 shoot like a .223

Sometimes I wish I brought a hacksaw so I cut chop the muzzle brakes off at the range.

Curious as to why? Side blast?

My guess is the other guy's gun's "BOOM!" makes him feel inadequate and inferior. A form of penis envy. "His is bigger than mine. :( "

Yours or somebody else's? If it is yours, just un-screw it to remove...no need break your gun. :) If it is for someone else's, then good luck with that. I sure don' t want to piss off somebody shooting an AR....maybe it is best to just wait for the guy to stop shooting his/her braked rifle, then shoot next when he/she is done....eventually they will run out of ammo to shoot. :shaka:

Good discussion on muzzle brakes.
Both the benefits of using one and how the side blast might affect the guy next to you.
Sometimes I wish I brought a hacksaw so I cut chop the muzzle brakes off at the range.
+ 1, except I would bring a wrench.
Brakes are all different, but some are just plain obnoxious. ( like Darmok :geekdanc: )
Don't worry Darm's, I'm getting in the Wahmbulance.

Lol that's funny . Yeah why don't you like it ? I have a break on every rifle I own. It just makes shooting a lot easier especially when hunting and making that follow up shot

It's encouraging that you're sensitized to your own whining! That's the first step toward recovery!!

I have a BattleComp on one of my ARs and you can tell a difference in muzzle movement between my other ARs with the A2. Is the recoil or muzzle movement bad with just the A2? No, but it's much less with a BattleComp.
The BattleComp is reportedly one of the less obnoxious muzzle devices out there with decent muzzle movement mitigation, but it's still pretty darn loud. It's not as loud as the PWS FSC or Surefire though. One of the loudest I've heard is the Miculek and the JP Enterprises ones. Those suckers are loud!
Do they bother me at the range? Nah. I've had a guy shooting his 338 Lapua next to me and the muzzle blast knocked over my spotting scope! Haha. I just made sure to not shoot standing next to his table.
All that said, I'd also prefer a suppressor, but maybe one day.

Hope it wasn't me if so my bad . That's why when we go to test the 338's I try to shoot it prone . 1 it's easier for me to shoot then sitting. 2 the blast is fricking crazy so its somewhat a common courtesy for other shooters .

If we do a find on "muzzle brake" & replace with "ejected brass", I think we might have a similar conversation going here ...

When I get to my bench to set up and notice the guy next to me is shooting with a brake, I make sure to reach into my range bag and pull out in ear plugs to go with my over ear muffs, and my big boy pants.

Nah. I've gotten to know they guy and he's not on here. He's cool as hell too. He'll offer to let me shoot his guns and I know they aren't cheap to shoot, especially his 300 WM and 338 Lapua.
It was actually pretty funny when the blast knocked my spotting scope over. I usually wear electronic ear pro, but I also have plugs in my bag and when I'm next to him, I make sure I have the plugs in too. Haha.

Perfect for the AR if you could figure out how to mount it, probably reduce recoil to pellet gun levels
Boomah :shaka:

Just got my upper back from ADCO where I had a Surefire Muzzle Brake pinned to a 14.5. Its frickin awesome! You can tell the difference with follow up shots staying on target. My brother and my friend also shot it and could tell the difference between their AR's and mine. So what if it's loud...it's a gun. It's supposed to go BOOM!

I like that pic of the Barrett. Looks like my 99.
I bought a CA 10 a couple years ago and originally didn't want a muzzle break but changed my mind and glad I did.
A friend has a .308 and the recoil is defiantly stronger than mine.
I've heard they can be a problem for some scopes but not mine.
