Damn Russia hit by a asteroids the size of a bus injuring 1000 people and now a asteroid the size of a football field is doing a fly by some 17000 miles away from earth the closest one in recorded history :o

On the news last night the guy was all like, even if it hit earth it wouldn't cause worldwide annihilation, just in a small area, then gave an example of Siberia or something. I'm sure it has the potential to mess with the atmosphere though.

He's right. The Siberia meteor that he was probably talking about was equivalent to about a 30 megaton nuclear bomb. The largest nuclear bomb ever detonated was 50 megatons, and we're all still alive.

Mmm...When they said DA14 was going to pass between the Earth and moon, I thought of Thundarr.

The one that hit Russia, while interesting, is still a non-event...an estimated 20,000 meteorites strike the Earth every year.

LOL that's the exact cartoon I thought of when I read that report. I'm in my 20's but I saw that cartoon on Cartoon Network when I was in intermediate school, just couldn't remember the name.
I read that statistic about meteorite strikes somewhere too. But I thought it's because those events are microscopic. Kinda like how we get cancer everyday but never know about it because the cancer cells die instantly
