Just came across this article in the Star Advertiser. Please pray for his son. Remember to always clear your firearm!

(City of Honolulu)
A 3-year old boy was taken to the hospital early Saturday morning after apparently being shot by his father on accident. It happened on Ala Ilima Street in the Salt Lake area shortly after midnight. Officials say the man was cleaning his rifle went it went off.
Paramedics transported the boy to a trauma center in serious condition.
Hope the boy is ok! Should not have happened !

No reason why this should have happened...No ammo in the same room as firearms being cleaned, people!! :(

With this mad rush on buying firearms, hopefully all the newbs are fully versed on firearm safety.
Based on the range reports, I'm not so sure.
Prayers out for the kid.

I too hope the child is going to be alright, but I fear we are going to be seeing more of these "accidents."
Just my opinion, but having been to the range a few times this year, I can see a whole lot of ignorance growing amongst the firearms community. People not knowing what the heck the are doing with a firearm being unsafe at the range seems to be more occurring than in the past. Luckily for the others around them, they are, for the most part, monitored and corrected before something happens.
An example, a guy had the be reminded 3 times to point his barrel down range, finally the official came over and corrected the situation. As the official stepped away the guy turned his rifle around again. WTF.
Now take these same ignorant people at home, when no one is there to monitor them, accident! .

Hopes and prayers go out to the child....
People should keep kids away from firearms....
Accidents are always bad when it involves firearms....

Everyone should have a mentor. Thanks Aiea78.

Everyone should take a firearm safety course even if not required for rifles....
Safety is priority #1 especially around the family....
Hopes and payers go out to the child!!!!

Gun safety is the number one priority in owning and handling firearms , I wish more people would realize this.
My prayers go out to the family!

I agree. Get a mentor! That's why I get so bent at Kokohead of people flagging eah other with muzzles, uncasing behind the line, shooting behind the bench and line. Some people don't clear their weapons before casing. Bad habits lead to this tragedy and more fodder for those wanting to take away our rights.

This. If you can't afford a firearm safety course, at least find someone to help you out!
I don't go out with LIFE just to teach. I'm always learning too! Don't ever once think you know everything there is to know about firearms, or even a firearm topic. Once you do, either someone will teach you something new, or something will go wrong.

I agree with firearms safety training and mentors. When I was in 5th grade my father took me down for a NRA rifle safety course. Very thorough class and very good instructor (was the same guy who took me for my first hunt with my dad). But the best lesson in firearms safety came from my Dad.
Was cleaning a rifle, 10/22, had checked it to make sure it was cleared multiple time before I started. In the middle of cleaning nature called, when I came back, my dad asked if I checked the rifle. I said yes and continued to clean the rifle. He told me to check it again, as I checked the chamber, there it was a cartridge in the chamber. Although it was a spent shell, by putting that shell in my rifle,my dad drove in an important message to me that night. Although you are to never to leave an unattended firearm loaded, If I ever take my eyes off a firearm for any period of time, always check it to make sure it is safe, never assume.
And that is why mentors are just as important if not more important that safety courses.
Thanks Dad :shaka:

My prayers go out to the boy and his family.
Just a few months ago I came home from the range and my 7 year old daughter always likes to help unpack and clean.
While unpacking the bags, I answer all my daughters questions and let her handle the guns. Out of pure habit, I re-checked the chamber before handing it over and sure enough there was a round in the chamber!!
And I swore I unloaded all my weapons prior to leaving the range
Thank god I had a great mentor, training and always triple check things. My daughter has already learned muzzle and trigger discipline, but still gotta be forever diligent.

My prayers go out to the boy and his family.
This is always a big fear, I have kids and I am always mindful of the muzzle and making sure the chamber is clear... I even use plastic CMP chamber flages.... Kids, close quarters and handling fire arms.
Safety always.
Hope the kid comes out of it

my mom said that on tonight's news, they said the bullet hit the ceiling, and the debris hit the child
still messed up, though

People should be talking about how the news is being spun to sound like the kid was shot, he wasn't. Should the gun have been cleared... yes but this isn't as big of a deal as they are making it.
-
They are spinning this one big time. Another abuse and misuse of a tragic situation.
The anti's are going to use this one to it's fullest advantage. They already shared this SA article hundred times on FB calling for people to support the anti's bills. There will be a lot of misguided people out there.
-
Media propaganda, again!!
-
("Juan told the Star-Advetiser he is a VERY SAFE gun user, and DOESN'T KNOW how a round was left in the barrel of his rifle when it went off while he was cleaning it.")
Saying things like VERY SAFE and DOESN'T KNOW in the same sentence makes us all look careless....
The world today doesn't like to take responsibility for their actions so they LEARN off of our President Obama, "Clinton Sr & Jr" by
saying things like "I TAKE FULL RESPONSIBILITY"... not knowing only people in high places can say foolish stuff
like that and get away with it without consequence.............for now.. :-\
This is an unfortunate incident that probably will happen more often due to the inflation of gun owners....
"Treat every firearm as if it is loaded!"
"Keep the muzzle in a safe direction!"
"Keep your finger off the trigger until you're are ready to fire!"
"Always know what's beyond the intended target!"
Of course this is just a few of the HUNDRED precautions to take while in this awesome freedom that we "STILL" have....Let's keep it that way

My brother texted me yesterday to tell me that the guy who accidentally shot his son lives in his condo a floor above his apartment unit and that he heard the shot at 12:10 a.m.. From what he knows, the kid was struck in the shoulder from .223 round that richocheted.

Why would you have a loaded rifle inside the house anyway? Always clear the weapon after the range. Double check. And dont clean a weapon around with childrens.... My prayer for the boy.
