sorry.
read it this morning in the paper.

I'll give a synopsis:
switching from the S&W 9mm, which has been in use for 22 years, to a Glock 17 9mm
the S&W model (I forget the exact model) was discontinued in 1999, so they are switching to something more easily repairable.
it says American Samoa may pick up some of the S&W guns

basically thats it.  cant remember any other details.

Initially they wanted to switch to the Glock 22 but concerns of the "smaller stature" officers handling recoil made the, switch to the 17.

I wonder how many years this changeover will take. Gen 5 might be out by the time they know what they're doing.

IIRC, the article says the change will occur over the next 3 years.

So, will they also be restricted to 10 round magazines?

Oh wait, they are the state, and the state never has to follow the laws we peasants do.

Nope they won't because they need more rounds because they face completely different threats than ordinary citizens.  (Sarcasm)

they need more rounds because they miss more than normal people who actually shoot from time to time.

Current duty issue is the 5906 with the exception of the Specialized Services Division.  The new issue is scheduled for June when the first order of 300 Glock 17 Gen4's arrive.  The schedule is to phase them in within 3 years.  It took nearly 8 years to phase in the 5906 from the .38 revolver.  The Glock 22 was never really on the table nor was it tested.  And while I own a 27, 23, 22 and a 35, I for one would not have the 22 as my first or second choice of Glocks, but that is just my preference.  Nice to see those keeping status quo one liners.  It really helps with productive dialogue.

Personally I'd prefer the G17 over the G22 / 9mm over .40cal.

9mm is lighter recoiling, faster on follow up shots, easier to control one handed, and offers 17 rds of 9mm vs. 15 rds of .40cal.
I know there are some who are all into "stopping power" homo stuff, but modern hollow point ammunition has equalized the major service caliber performance. While .40 may commonly have some defensive loads that are better for intermediate barrier penetration, a good bonded 9mm load can perform the same, and has shown to perform the same. Bonded Speer gold dot for example.

so there will be cheap S&W 5906 for sale in the future?  I already have a 4506 which is a pretty sweet .45   I could use a baby brother for it.

Nope.

The powers that be would rather shoot you than let a civilian own another firearm.

yep, cause hawaii is so awash with gun crime, and we were just going to leave em in a box on the HPD steps and let people have a free for all, right, Kealoha?

what an ass.

Darn, I put the paper out for recycling last night so can't double check.

If I recall correctly, Chief Kealoha said those that aren't donated to the American Samoa Police force would be destroyed.  Enough guns on the "streets" he said. ( someone correct me if I'm wrong )

They should have a gun buy-off at the next gun show      :D

anything to treat us like criminals.

Kealoha already came to a foregone conclusion that any civilian buying these pistols is going to go out and just shoot up the neighborhood.
